I am a basic obedience trainer at NerdyK9. When people think of training, they think it's just for the dog but in reality, training is for both ends of the leash. When adults bring kids or grandkids to training sessions, I have one rule: if you're there with me, I'm putting you to work! Training is a fun way to bond with your dog whether you're 9 years old or 90 years old. In this clip, my client's kiddo came in thinking he was going to sit through training and be bored. By the end of the session, he was the one doing the training. Mom sat out and kiddo did the work. My favorite thing was that he asked if we could do more after their session was over. Their pup didn't know how to stay at the beginning of this session and look at the progress we made. If you & your family need help with training, we've got you. 🐾

Yesterday we had another day of successful play group with Sioux Falls Area Humane Society staff & volunteers. Getting these dogs out to play and see how they do with other dogs is such a positive thing for everyone involved.
For the dogs - they get to learn how to interact with other dogs & humans. They get to burn off energy, be out of the kennel, and get some fresh air.
For the staff & volunteers - we get to see how the dogs interact with other dogs & humans. This is hugely important information for their bios and potential adopters.
For the adopters - you get to see the personality of these dogs. Look how fast Ryder & Reggie are or how bouncy Bugs & Georgie are, how much Pongo & Teddy Bear love people.
At NerdyK9, we are passionate about so much more than just training. We genuinely care about the well-being of the shelter dogs in our community. We care about the people adopting them & their futures together. Thank you to everyone who fosters, adopts, donates, volunteers, animal control officers, shelter staff, and all others involved. This week we made sure the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society dogs will get some love on Thanksgiving by prepping kongs for them. We used plain greek yogurt + freeze dried turkey, pumpkin puree + turkey canned food and froze them. Happy Thanksgiving to all. 🐾🦃🎃

Riley is an energetic, big sweetie who needs someone that can give him the love and attention he deserves. He is highly motivated by food and would be a great adventure partner. Buddy from Almost Home Canine Rescue suffered a broken pelvis, Ecoli infection, FHO, and reconstruction of his urinary system. He's now started training and getting caught up on life he missed while he was down❤️

I took this handsome boy from play group where he was playing and having a blast. His engagement was not with me, it was with everything going on around us. By playing this game for a minute or two before we start working, I'm setting the tone for the entire session. I'll be honest, I wanted to go straight from play group into working. I was ready. He was not. When we started our session, he was all over the place which is why I had to pause and remind myself that just because I'm mentally ready, that doesn't mean he is. After doing this short exercise, we had a great training session. If you're struggling with engagement, try this and let us know what you think! 🐾
