Can I share a secret?

Dog parks are NOT IT.

Dog parks are:
🚩 Chaotic. Dogs are chasing, hu***ng, bullying, etc. It's a free for all.
🚩 Unsupervised. Pet parents let their dogs off the leash and then sit on their phones the whole time. Dogs are not being properly managed.
🚩 Unsanitary. Who is cleaning and disinfecting the dog park? Who is wiping down benches, cement, water bowls, toys, etc. after dogs have been in there? Who is making sure everyone is picking up p**p after their dog goes to the bathroom? No one.
🚩 A heath risk. Since the dog park is open to the public, any dog can go. Who is making sure dogs have been vaccinated? Have clean fecals with no parasites/worms? Not sick? Again, no one.
🚩 Unsafe. Literally ANYYYY dog can go to the dog park. Dogs who are reactive, aggressive, or inappropriate. Yet, pet parents still bring them and you have no idea the behavior or temperament of a dog until after you send your dog in.

But, you want to socialize your dog, right? You want them to get exercise, mental stimulation, etc.

Hear me out.....

✨ DOGGIE DAYCARE ✨
✅ Dogs play in a fun and controlled environment.
✅ Daycare groups are supervised by staff who are trained in pet first aid/CPR, managing dogs in off leash play, and how to understand dog body language.
✅ Daycare facilities will have strict cleaning protocols to minimize risk of communicable diseases.
✅ Dogs must be vaccinated and in good health to participate in daycare. Most daycares also require dogs to be spayed or neutered by a certain age to participate in group play as well.
✅ Dogs must pass an evaluation before they can play with other dogs. This ensures any dog in daycare has a good temperament, redirects easily, and listens to the staff. This is huge in preventing dog fights.

The downside to bringing your dog to daycare vs. the dog park is that you will have to pay, and have to follow the businesses hours and policies. However, I think the benefits of doggie daycare completely outweigh the small inconveniences.

However, not all doggie daycares are the same! Not sure where to start when looking for a doggie daycare? Send me a DM and I'd love to help you out🫶🏼

Let's talk about it.....

We're seeing A LOT of vets and pet professionals make recommendations to protect your pet against this mystery illness. One of those recommendations is to have your dog up to date on vaccines.

In my last video, I mentioned that as pet professionals, one of our controllables is making sure dogs are up to date on core vaccines. I just want to clarify, core vaccines WILL NOT protect against this mystery illness. That was just an "in general" tip.

In fact, there is NO VACCINE currently that will protect your dog from this upper respiratory illness. The Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccines have no protection against what is going around.

So, what can we do as pet professionals and pet parents when it comes to vaccines?

✅ Do not get multiple vaccines in 1 visit. Vaccines trigger an immune response, and getting multiple vaccines can send the immune system into overdrive.

✅ Require a wait period/keep your pets home, after receiving vaccines. After a dog gets a vaccine, their immune system is going to be weakened. You don't want a dog in your facility, or to bring your dog somewhere, while their immune system is not at its best. Additionally, vaccines like the Bordetella, can cause symptoms of kennel cough and appear up to 14 days after the fact. It is also a modified live virus in some cases, which means a dog can potentially be spreading "kennel cough" around after getting this vaccine.

✅ Allow time for your pet to rest after a vaccine. To go off my last point, sometimes after a vaccine our pets can be sore, lethargic, irritable, etc. It is best to give them some time to rest before bringing them into a pet care facility. This time also allows you to watch for any adverse reactions to the vaccines.

✅ Don't over vaccinate. The only vaccine that is required by law is the Rabies vaccine. Ask your vet for a titer test for other core vaccines (Distemper and Parvo) to check for antibodies.

Again, as a pet parent it is YOUR CHOICE how you choose to protect your pet. You know them best. Always speak to your vet if you have concerns about your pet's health. 🤍

One thing your staff is going to do is talk money with each other. At some point, this WILL happen. Whether you hear about it or not. And at some point, someone's going to be upset at their paycheck after hearing about what others make. ⠀

Here are some tips on how to navigate the conversation around pay raises and employee performance! 📈

I'm in a few different Facebook groups for pet care professionals, and there's always lots of questions from managers or owners. These questions can range from daycare structure, dog fights, staff issues, client communication, etc. ⠀

Part of what I want to get into is business consulting with pet care professionals who need help dealing with day to day operations. So I've decided I'm going to start posting some questions people have in these groups and the advice I give them. ⠀

If you have any questions about your business, DM and I would be more than happy to give you some advice!

Seeing these stats was the motivation and encouragement I needed to be more consistent with this podcast. Whether there was 1 download somewhere, or multiple, it's insane to see the reach and the potential this platform has. ⠀

OFF LEASH PLAY SHOULD BE NAKED!! ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
If you're bringing your dog to the dog park, daycare, or having doggie play dates with your friends or family, collars and harnesses need to be OFF!⠀⠀
⠀⠀
It doesn't matter how calm a daycare group is, how well behaved the dogs are, etc. Regular, calm playing can easily turn into a tragic accident if a dogs tooth or jaw gets caught in another dogs collar. The dog who's stuck can break teeth or their jaw, while the other dog chokes and can die. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
THIS HAPPENS!!!! Please don't think this can't or won't ever happen because it is a very scary possibility and it happens FAST. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Collar strangulation is a 100% preventable death if off leash play was naked to begin with. There's absolutely no reason to have collars or harnesses on dogs when they're playing. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Other reasons you should remove a collar:⠀⠀
• You're leaving your pet home alone⠀⠀
• Any time a pet is going into a crate (this is at home or for any dog in a pet care facility)⠀⠀
• Your pet is running around a securely fenced in yard⠀⠀
• Your pet is indoors⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Other ways to keep dogs safe:⠀
• Get then microchipped ⠀
• Make sure your backyard, daycare play yard, etc. are securely fenced⠀
• Put up barriers throughout your pet care facility (extra doors, and gates) ⠀
• For pet professionals worrying about identification - get paper breakaway collars to put on the dogs in your care. You can write the dogs name on them or even get a machine to print out specific info

⭐️ PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ⭐️⠀

has a few pet products that I think are definitely worth checking out! These pet shampoo bars are great for the whole body, but I like using them around the muzzle and the ears.

These are comparable to Chubbs Bars, but there are some key differences. ⠀

Chagrin Valley:⠀
✅ Discloses ingredients ⠀
✅ OEFFA certified organic (the certification proves ingredients are organic) (USDA accredited organic certifying agent)⠀
✅ $6.75 for a 3.5 oz bar compared to $12.97 for a 4oz bar ⠀

I love a company that is transparent and has actual certifications to back the claims they make! 👏🏻

DOG BITE PREVENTION⠀

Many times, dog bites are preventable. Most dogs don't go straight to biting. There are usually MULTIPLE warning signs before a bite. ⠀

▪️Don't leave children unattended around dogs⠀

▪️Teach children how to properly interact with dogs (don't allow them to pull on their ears, tail or legs, hit them, or climb on them)⠀

▪️Expose your dog to different stimuli and their body being touched, grabbed or handled. Obviously you are going to teach your child how to interact with a dog, but it's also good to have your dog used to being touched to reduce the chance of them reacting ⠀

▪️Pay attention to warning signs or signs a dog is uncomfortable. Yawning, lip licking, ears back, half moon eyes, lifting their lips, growling, hair up, and body stiffness are all examples of a dog that is uncomfortable⠀

▪️Sometimes dogs licking you or a child doesn't mean they are happy. Pay attention to other aspects of their body language to see if they are stressed or relaxed⠀

▪️Tail wagging also doesn't mean the dog is happy. Tail wagging can just mean excitement, and excitement isn't always a good thing. Again, pay attention to other aspects of their body language⠀

▪️DON'T IGNORE WARNING SIGNS. If a dog is telling you they are stressed, uncomfortable, or fearful, back off. If you need to seek a trainer or behaviorist for your dog, you need to do that. If you ignore warning signs, eventually a dog will stop giving them to you and go straight to biting ⠀

▪️You must advocate for your dogs and if you notice they are stressed, remove them from the situation⠀

▪️Dogs may be more prone to bite if they are in pain or coming out of a seizure ⠀

Let's set our dogs up for success👏🏻

Coming off my last post discussing ingredients and greenwashing, I want to start doing product highlights for brands that are making cleaner options for our pets! ⠀

First product spotlight is the TropiClean Bluerry Facial! Blueberry facial shampoos are quite popular to help with staining, brightening and really giving a good clean wash to the face. And it smells great! 🫐 ⠀

However most of the blueberry shampoos out there don't look like TropiCleans and that's because they use synthetic dyes like FD&C Blue to give it color, which is totally unnecessary and a harmful ingredient! And these products don't even contain blueberries🤔⠀

The Tropiclean Blueberry Facial is gentle to use around the face, cleaning well and leaving the face smelling and looking fresh💙 Definitely recommend giving it a try!

05/02/2023

It's important to understand that the pet industry is such a widely unregulated industry. This goes for pet food, grooming products and even pet businesses. ⠀

According to the FDA, "The animal counterpart of a cosmetic is commonly referred to as a "grooming aid." The Act defines a cosmetic as pertaining only to human use. Therefore, products intended for cleansing or promoting attractiveness of animals are not subject to FDA control." ⠀

These are just a few example of greenwashing in the industry. But pretty much all the popular, big brand named grooming products have terrible ingredients🫠🫠 ⠀

Some push back I'll here when I talk about ingredients:⠀

"It's only being used on the animals every 4-10 weeks"⠀
While that's true, we don't know the dogs lifestyle at home. We don't know their diet, the environmental toxins they come in contact with, their lifestyle, etc. so we should be looking to minimize their toxic load, not add to it.⠀

"It's not on their skin for long"⠀
The skin is the largest organ and these products ARE absorbing into the skin. Who knows the effects of this build up over time (actually we do- skin irritations, cancer, etc.). Also, products should sit on the skin for at least 5 minutes to give them a chance to work, and increased contact time is a big reason for skin irritations, so if your products already contain harsh/harmful ingredients then your pets are more likely to have a bad reaction. ⠀

"If it wasn't safe it wouldn't be sold"⠀
Grooming products are not regulated by the FDA, so there's no one telling them they can't use certain ingredients. Also, we see this with human products ALL THE TIME that are considered "safe" and even have FDA approval and 5, 10, 20 years later get recalled after the damage has already been done. ⠀

Groomers, remember it's YOUR health at risk too. Your skin is coming in contact with these products all day, multiple days a week for your entire career. What damage are these ingredients doing to you?

Quick little announcement, I'm currently 21 weeks pregnant! 🥰 Baby girl Aria is due in June🦋☀️💗⠀

So what does this mean for my grooming? I will no longer be grooming dogs over 40lbs or dogs that require special handling. I cannot risk getting bit, and can also not restrain or lift larger dogs. ⠀

Dogs that are right at that 40lbs mark, I will need to schedule you on SATURDAYS ONLY as that is the only day of the week I have assistance. ⠀

Please schedule accordingly and in advance as my Saturday availability is very limited until May. ⠀

Thank you guys for all your support🫶🏽

Hiiiiiii everyone👋🏼⠀

My name is Brittany and I am 27 years old (turning 28 in a couple weeks! 🥳). I am a professional groomer but have 10 years experience in the pet industry working in daycare, boarding, grooming and training facilities. I've worked as a kennel attendant, bather, grooming assistant and most recently managed a facility. ⠀

I think there is a lot of improvements that can be made within our industry and the biggest one is EDUCATION. Not just for pet parents, but pet professionals as well. This year is dedicated to growing my business (hopefully into a daycare, boarding and grooming facility🤞🏼), continuing my education and sharing that knowledge with all of you🤍🫶🏽⠀

Business consultations, grooming appointments, and pet sitting available. Contact me for more information📲
