Danielle: Is DHD still on pull hold?

Dayna: Not for regular fosters. You are not on hold. šŸ™‚

Knowing Danielle had an adoption pending, I knew Iā€™d be sending a hold to CACC very soon.

Pull hold or not, thereā€™s no fu***ng way Iā€™d tell our regular fosters we wonā€™t pull for them. We will ALWAYS pull for them. They are what keep us going.

Chicago Animal Care and Controlā€™s Tarini, now Charlize, got her rescue ride straight to our vet. She looks like a hot fu***ng mess so we figured we better get her looked at sooner rather than later.

Thank you, Danielle, yet again! And thanks to Erin S. for her ride to Naperville!

Welcome to DHD, Charlize. šŸ’œ

29/07/2024

If Dayna gets a late night Great Pyrenees puppy while weā€™re on an alleged pull hold, then I get an old, dying, yellow lab. Fair is fair.

I love labs - particularly of the yellow variety - almost as much as I love pits. Sorry guys. But labs donā€™t really need our help. And when they do, they end up being as****es 100% of the time.

Go ahead, try to name one DHD lab that hasnā€™t been an as***le. Iā€™ll wait. But not, because there are none.

For a long time, Iā€™ve wanted to start a non-profit called One Great Day, where we pull dogs from CACC that were about to be euthanized for whatever reason. Volunteers give them one happy last day and then give them peace, outside of the shelter with someone who loves them.

But, who the f**k is going to donate for me and my friends to buy cheeseburgers and kill a bunch of dogs?

The fascinating thing about DHD is that we do and say all sorts of offensive s**t, and people still donate to us without us even asking them to. Our supporters are truly in it for the dogs. Sweet little old ladies send us their social security checks no matter how many times we say f**k or talk about how much we love drugs, and they thank God and/or some random Saint for saving the dog because we did absolutely nothing. It was all the hard work of those sky guys, not a bunch of DHD degenerates. Whatever they need to think to keep sending us money - we are cool with it. Great job, sky guys. Keep it up.

So, the old, dying, yellow lab is going to get his One Great Day with DHD. Heā€™s extremely emaciated and has all sorts of medical f**kery going on.

And, most of all, he is sick and tired of your s**t.

Same.

Someone at the shelter, who will remain nameless for their own protection, actually asked me to name him Angel Pie. I guess they donā€™t follow us.

Welcome to DHD, Rickety Cricket. šŸ’œ

Yesterday we made the decision to go on pull hold. We had one pre planned pull for tomorrow, but that was it.

We are on hold!

And then the middle of the night came, and a 6 month old Great Pyrenees with a badly broken leg, was brought into an emergency vet. Euthanasia was on the table if rescue wasnā€™t secured.

Soā€¦now we have a Great Pyrenees with a badly broken leg.

Welcome to DHD, Robert. šŸ’œ

Marketing fu***ng matters.

While we know that no one markets dogs quite like DHDā€¦each organization needs to work with what they have. This was poor communication, that led to bad marketing.

This is Snorts. Marketed as urgent, rescue only, because heā€™s heartworm positive.

Heartworm positive is usually a huge turn off for rescues. Treatment is long, itā€™s expensive, and itā€™s just not as easy as pulling healthy dogs. DHD doesnā€™t care about taking heartworm positive dogs, we just need the foster.

Why was his marketing bad, you ask?

Because he was SHOT IN THE CHEST with a fu***ng BB gun! AND heā€™s heartworm positive!

ā€œURGENT!!! Shot in the chest with a BB gun and HW+ā€ would have gotten Snorts out of there at warp speed.

After absorbing the f**kery this dog has gone through, I update his foster, and he tells me heā€™s naming him, Tupac.

This has me giddy. This was the best news I received all day. Weā€™ve got a Chicago gangsta dog, shot in the chest, and weā€™ve named him, Tupac.

But the best part of my day was short lived when Jeff, was joking. We wouldnā€™t be naming him Tupac, at all. Weā€™d be naming him, Oscar.

And this is when I realized the wrong guy was shot in the chest with a BB gun.

Iā€™ve always liked Jeff Molitor. Heā€™s helped us on numerous occasions, heā€™s always there to market Chicago dogs, and heā€™s driven from bum f**k Egypt to photograph a dog of ours, just because we asked.

I thought that if Jeff wanted to foster a medical dog with DHD, knowing heā€™d be driving from bum f**k Egypt, it meant Jeff really liked DHD.

I was fu***ng wrong. Jeff clearly has some beef with me that heā€™s chosen to address in a passive aggressive manner. Weā€™ve obviously got some issues to work through, but I think we can do it.

Thank you for fostering, Jeff!

Welcome to DHD, Oscar. šŸ’œ

P.S. His name should be Tupac, and naming him Oscar, is also an example of not marketing to the best of our ability.

20/07/2024

We said we had one pull today.

That wasnā€™t true.

Heena, had to break into our supply home again, weā€™ve DoorDashed dog crates multiple times this week, I told someone they could go grab dog food I knew was accessibleā€¦only to find out it had been removed so it wasnā€™t accessible, and we arenā€™t done just yet!

Heena: do you need any baby doll toilet medications for the supply kit?

Thatā€™s rightā€¦weā€™re just stashing medications in childrenā€™s toy toilets now. Trying to make all the supplies accessible, while also being the most unprepared for this many pulls, when our supply VIP is just trying to have a vacation.

Jesus Christ.

Also Heena: How many ways can we make this hard?

Just the most ways.

Thereā€™s one more rescue ride a little later. Chicago Animal Care and Control, donā€™t post any fu***ng urgent dogs.

I am the most sober right now and Iā€™m not happy about it. No pulls tomorrow!

Teo, now named Bocce, is pull # 7 from CACC since last Saturday. Stay tuned for # 8.

Iā€™m unlikely to be sober for # 8.

Thank you, Tawnie, for stepping up to foster, and Galia, for helping with supplies and the pull.

I feel like we owe Heena some sexual favors or something for all sheā€™s done this week. Iā€™m still spitballing ā€œthank youā€ gestures though.

Becca, please, never leave us. This rescue will collapse if I have to do supplies again.

Welcome to DHD, Bocce. šŸ’œ

Oh, come the f**k on.

She couldnā€™t look less sick.

Iā€™m not sure I believe sheā€™s super sick, but apparently she is in heat.

Never fostered before? Fantastic! Take this bloody one. Youā€™ll love it!

Diapers deliver between 4-8am tomorrow.

Weā€™ve completed the trif**kta (Tara wanted to make sure I added that) and weā€™re done pulling today. Weā€™ve got another tomorrow though.

Fun fact: The week our supply person is on vacation, is when we get fu***ng killed with applications. Almost as if people wanted to make this more difficult for us.

That seems right.

Shout out to Heena, who breaks into peopleā€™s homes to make supply kits for us. And shout out to Becca, for letting us have people break into her home to make supply kits.

I feel like itā€™s weird how many times weā€™re all just in peopleā€™s homesā€¦doing dog thingsā€¦while the home owners arenā€™t there. I could be wrong though. Maybe all rescues are just like us.

I donā€™t know about Tara, but Iā€™m signing off. This s**t show is over for the night!

Thank you, Ricardo, for stepping up to foster, and sorry about the vag blood on all your s**t.

Welcome to DHD, Ettalee. šŸ’œ

Second Chicago Animal Care and Control rescue ride of the day for Marion!

Thank you, Joan, for saving another.

I got my big gray boy earlier and now Dayna got her cropped-eared gremlin.

But OF FU***NG COURSE we canā€™t just be happy that we each got a dog of our respective ā€œtypeā€ and call it a day.

So, yes, thereā€™s one more rescue ride coming tonight.

But thatā€™s it. No more. Everyone else has to wait until tomorrow.

Welcome to DHD, Marion. šŸ’œ

First Chicago Animal Care and Control rescue ride of the day for Spike, now Moose!

This poor kid canā€™t even open his eyes, his entropian is so bad (eyelashes growing inward).

But, good news! Heā€™s having surgery at our vet today, also getting his balls lobbed off, and then going into a foster home!

Heā€™s supposedly not even a year old, and already 75lbs. Swoon.

Thank you Samantha for fostering and Erin for transporting.

Rescue ride for urgent Hilda!

Time stamped for tonight at 7pm. For once, we were early!

She just arrived at CACC on July 4th so we know very little about her. Hopefully she's not an as***le.

I see precisely zero snot in these photos so weā€™ll see if this oneā€™s actually sick.

Thank you, Brandon and David, for fostering.

The moment I saw the name ā€˜Steel Buttonsā€™ I knew I remembered this dog.

First, because itā€™s a stupid fu***ng name.

Second, because I was in love with this dog last time he was at Chicago Animal Care and Control.

We rarely have a lot of history on the dogs we pull, but this guy has an entire timeline.

July 2016 - Age: Puppy
Purchased from a ā€œbreeder.ā€

********************************************

March 2017 - Age: 8 months old
Picked up as a stray and brought to CACC.

His family came for him. Returned to owner.

********************************************

February 2021 - Age: 4 Years
Surrendered to CACC because his family was moving and the landlord didnā€™t allow pets. He had spent 4 years with the same family. Lived with children and other animals.

*********************************************

May 2021 - Age: 4 Years
Adopted from CACC.

**********************************************

January of 2022 - Age: 5 Years
Picked up as a chipped stray and brought back to CACC.

His family came for him. Returned to owner.

**********************************************

June/July 2024 - Age: 8 Years
Picked up as a chipped stray and brought to CACC.

His family said they were coming to get him this time too, but they never did. Their loss, our gain.

In case you lost count, heā€™s now 8 years old, had 2 families, and has been to CACC 4 times. This was his last time.

Thank you, Janessa, for fostering!

Welcome to DHD, Steel! šŸ’œ

09/07/2024

Let me be dead instead.

This is Suzanne ā€œCrazy Eyesā€ Warrenā€™s ā€œafterā€ post. The one where we show you how happy and healthy she looks since we rescued her. A lucky dog who escaped a euthanasia deadline, and is now grateful, and loving life.

Nailed it.

As you can see by her faceā€¦Suzanne fu***ng hates us. Sheā€™d rather be dead instead.

Since joining DHD, Suzanne spends her days crafting escape plans, and mass producing homemade shivsā€¦which she strategically stashes throughout her foster home.

Suzanne is just biding time until her master escape plan ā€œshank a DHD bitchā€ can be executed or she gets adopted. By applying to adopt, you can save a DHD volunteer from being shanked, and you can get Suzanne out of this hellish rescue.

Suzanne is a well rounded dog that is potty trained, crate trained, dog friendly, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative.

But waitā€¦thereā€™s more!

Her adoption fee includes her Healed by the Hound ā€œeat a bag of dicksā€ collar, a leash, harness, orange prison jumpsuit, and a never been done before, shiv scavenger hunt! Youā€™ll have 45 seconds on the clock to find as many of the Suzanne hidden shivs as you can. The more shivs you find, the more shivs you take home!

Rescue ride for urgent Kimora!

This girl was time stamped for euthanasia at 7pm last night with about 45 minutesā€™ notice. As soon as I saw it, I knew we were f**ked, and decided to just pretend I never saw the post. What the f**k is anyone supposed to do in 45 minutes on a holiday weekend? Pretend you didnā€™t see the post, thatā€™s what. You all can tag us all you want - we always see the posts before you. Itā€™s cute that you all think we arenā€™t on Facebook 24/7, ignoring CACC Dog Transfer Team posts.

Though Ron hasnā€™t tagged us in a while, hope heā€™s ok.

But at 6:50pm, while I happened to be out on my street trying to catch a stray dog, one of our fosters texted, wanting to take her. Goddammit. And sheā€™s out of town until Sunday night. Goddammit. Nothing can ever just work the way itā€™s supposed to, and certainly not ten minutes before a dog is scheduled to die. This is exactly why we ignore Facebook posts about urgent dogs. So I caught the stray dog, got her back home, and emailed CACC at 7:01pm to let them know that we were working on Kimora.

A CACC volunteer offered to take her until Sunday, so she got her rescue ride this morning.

Thank you Laura and Michelle for the teamwork.

And if this isnā€™t a GOTCHA, BI***ES! face, I donā€™t know what is. Will someone please euthanize me at 7pm tonight? Thanks.

Welcome to DHD, Kimora. šŸ’œ

Rescue ride for Dreyfus!

Welp, weā€™ve fu***ng gone and done it again. Another non-bully breed has managed to bully its way into DHD.

I know what youā€™re all thinking: every single non-pit we pull, bites us in the ass. Sometimes, literally.

But how can we say no to a good foster app, when nice, adoptable dogs were already dying for space at our local shelters and stray intake has been extra insane this week and only going to get worse? Even if the applicants areā€¦Shar Pei people.

And if we didnā€™t repeat the same mistakes over and over, just so we have something to complain about at all times, would we even be middle aged rescue women?

You can go ahead and just send us your entire bank account now, because the last Shar Pei we had in the rescue racked up at least $1 billion in vet bills. In fact, our vets are all drinking their faces off on their DHD Shar Pei yachts today.

Thank you Erin and Nick for fostering.

Welcome to DHD, Dreyfus. šŸ’œ

Don't worry, we didn't forget about June adoptions - it just took me this long to realize that it's already fu***ng July.

Ten dogs adopted in June!

Aunt Bea (CACC)
Davis (CACC)
Dory (CACC Florence)
Emmett (CACC Jericho)
Margeaux (CACC Aldona)
Mojo Nixon (CACC Riggins)
Moonpie (CACC)
Penny (CACC Alaina)
Reese (CACC Hazel)
Wallis (CACC)

View our adoptable dogs and apply at www.darkhorsedogs.org.

Don't forget that the next few days will be extremely difficult for our local shelters, so if you want to help ease some of that burden by fostering you can read our FAQs and apply on our website too. We'll already be opening up one more kennel at CACC tomorrow thanks to a foster, but that's just one.

You can also help immensely by not losing your fu***ng dog this weekend. There's our 4th of July PSA. You're welcome.

03/07/2024

When we plan a pull, we normally have fosters pick up supplies prior to getting the dog. Depending on timing, locations, and whatnot, we alter the plans a bit.

Todayā€™s plan: Chicago Animal Care and Control dog pick up, then supply pick up.

We received our rescue ride photo and this text a bit later:

ā€œSooo one of us was soo excited to get our boy home that I forgot the supplies ā€¦. Iā€™m circling backā€¦ be there soon šŸ™‚ā€

Iā€™ve since sent her a list of famous forgetful characters as inspiration, because her foster needs a new name. Yannis, is not a cute name.

I wonā€™t use a Pissfingers placeholder for this one though. This is a new foster and Iā€™m already kicking it off by giving her s**t online, so Iā€™ll take it easy now. I also wouldnā€™t have reacted as gracefully if I had done the same thing. I would have been irrationally fu***ng pi**ed until I got home.

Thanks for fostering and being a good sport, Aneta!

Welcome to DHD, Yannis. šŸ’œ

It took a few minutes to confirm but it does appear the last dog we pulled from City of Aurora IL Animal Care and Control was in August of 2020.

Nearly 4 years later, we have officially pulled again, and hope thereā€™s more to come.

Impala was urgent, with a deadline to find rescue by 7/1/24, and thanks to Jenny, for stepping up, she has left the building and is getting comfortable in a foster home. And she got herself a new name.

FOSTERS NEEDED: 7/1/2024 DEADLINES

Itā€™s been a long ass time since weā€™ve worked with Aurora Animal Care & Control (AACC). Our past relationship struggled, and ultimately, we decided weā€™d no longer work with AACC.

We moved on, and focused our efforts elsewhere. We havenā€™t stepped foot in AACC in years.

Over the last few months, AACC finally started making positive change, but now theyā€™re tasked with trying to gain back rescue partners that left on a bad note.

Seeing this change is EXACTLY what we begged forā€¦years ago. Theyā€™ve acknowledged the past and theyā€™ve pivoted. When we know better, we do better. DHD would like to support AACCā€™s new efforts, so this post is for Aurora Animal Care & Control dogs.

If youā€™re interested in fostering any of the dogs below, please fill out a foster application on our website:

Fosters needed!

Itā€™s been a while since we posted dogs we want to pull, because we keep getting stuck with hideous looking and/or obnoxious urgent dogs that no one (including us) wants.

Iā€™m a huge fan of creating extra, fu***ng stupid, work for wonderful people who generously volunteer their free time to do good. Itā€™s the hallmark of volunteering: everyone wants to waste your fu***ng time, while simultaneously telling you how much they respect you and your time.

So, in the spirit of this, I asked my Chicago Animal Care and Control volunteer friends to find all of the dick shaped toys at the shelter and see which dogs preferred them. Conveniently, I manage one of the CACC Amazon wish lists, and make sure there are at least five ph***ic toys on it at all times.

Fewer dogs than I expected/hoped passed the dick test.

Here are all of the cock-loving dogs we would like to pull:

Apply to foster, and read our foster FAQs at www.darkhorsedogs.org

Cat tests can be requested for approved foster apps. Dogs are not tested with kids, but we are making assumptions based on behavior and kids not being as****es.

Want to foster a dog thatā€™s not on this list? You can still apply with us. Unless itā€™s hideous and/or obnoxious; we already have too many of those. Loving dicks is negotiable.

Rescue ride for Davis!

Itā€™s Fatherā€™s Day, so Cristina, his foster, brought her dad with her to Chicago Animal Care and Control. Cristinaā€™s dad just so happens to be 38th Ward Alderman Nicholas Sposato, who often does donation drives for CACC.

Weā€™re politically connected now, guys. This is gonna be fun.

Thank you, Cristina, for fostering!

Welcome to DHD, Davis. šŸ’œ

Update: foster found and he'll join DHD on Sunday!

Foster needed for Davis!

Today we took Chicago Animal Care and Controlā€™s long term Davis on a Doggy Day Out!

I fully expected this dog to be an as***le because heā€™s young and stressed. And if you know me, you know that I (Tara) love as***le dogs. But sadly, Davis disappointed me by being almost entirely not an as***le.

What we learned about him:
āœ”ļø Young, likely 1.5-2yo
āœ”ļø 55lbs-ish - most of it is his head
āœ”ļø People friendly
āœ”ļø Dog friendly and goes to playgroup
āœ”ļø Had a good cat test
āœ”ļø Cuddly
āœ”ļø No issues with handling
āœ”ļø Fine in the car
āœ”ļø Not mouthy
āœ”ļø Will teabag you with his empty ball sack if your face is within reach
āœ”ļø Only interested in dick shaped toys (same)
āœ”ļø Highly food motivated and trainable - we even had Margaret from Copilot Dogs with us to confirm
āœ”ļø He especially loves cheese
āœ”ļø Super fu***ng dumb
āœ”ļø Attentive to his handler
āœ”ļø A very happy and easygoing meatball
āœ”ļø Already neutered and vetted so you donā€™t have to deal with that s**t
āœ”ļø Probably no little kids due to the aforementioned te******ng

Davis has been at CACC since April 1st and is urgent for kennel stress. We got the sense that he may have been euthanized last night if we hadnā€™t had this planned today. It would be a real fu***ng shame if a dog this stupid and nice was euthanized but heā€™s most definitely at risk, any day now.

Apply to foster Davis at www.darkhorsedogs.org or you can adopt him directly from CACC!
