Shameless Pets Upcycling Feature: CATNIP

Did you know a lot of catnip grown on farms just gets thrown away?!

Here’s how Shameless Peta is helping save the catnip plant:

1. They reach out to farmers in the US to see if catnip harvest is being fully consumed.
2. They visit their farm and get to know them in person.
3. Most farms trim the catnip plant and fine pieces drop to the ground and are ultimately deemed “food waste”
4. However, these pieces are perfectly edible and ideal for creating cat treats!
5. They buy those pieces from the farmer, reduce waste and reduce maintenance costs for the farmer

This process = upcycling. They are "creating new, high-quality products from surplus food" defined by the Upcycled Food Association.

For catnip, Shameless Pets partners with a certified organic farm in Washington state, who are the largest growers of organic catnip in North America. This is a massive win for everyone, including our kitty friends who love these treats!

As our business grows, it has been so important to add another set of caring hands onto our team and now that Gabe has graduated, he will be joining us full time to help with homestays and walks.

Gabe is the reason we got into pet sitting to begin with and has been an incredible caregiver to pets across the country since we began in 2017. He will have his own rates separate from Molly's and has broad openings to help with well-adjusted animals as he begins learning more about reactive and anxious pets.

The evolution of a snuggle ♥️

Sometimes when you have a rescue pet, they need to learn you are safe. Through no fault of their own they are scared and as a petsitter, we have to make them feel comfortable in a short amount of time. Beethoven made huge strides yesterday! A quiet, midday nap session helped, hopefully, to make him feel more comfortable with the presence of a new person in his world. In cases like his, we will just keep showing up and letting him lead the bonding process 💙🐕

Newest member of the F+L Family: Poppy 💗🐶💗

Let's talk about pups who abide by the No New Friends vibe. Sometimes when you have a pet who spends the majority of their time with one human in a pack, it can be really hard to gain access to their good graces. So when I first met this little babe, she let me know I would need to work at gaining her confidence as a caregiver. Barking, avoiding being in my general area, and generally uneasy with being alone with me.

How do you win over a pup in a short amount of time?

• Calm energy, movements, and affirmations

• Let them lead the engagement

• Keep in the periphery of their bubble

• Reassure them with every movement towards you and praise their bravery

In less than two hours, Poppy was in my lap snuggled up and getting a doggy massage. Winning over dogs is not always so easy but being able to work with dogs who don't like humans outside of their home pack takes confidence, compassion, and experience as a petsitter.

If you have a pet who isn't accepting of new people and want to work with a sitter who can help, we would love to meet you. We know how hard it can be to feel anxious about leaving your pet with someone new and the feeling of almost being unable to have a life outside of the home and their care.
