Humane, modern dog training and behavior modification using fear free, force free, pain free, positi Why not?
Our philosophy is simple: We don't use choke collars, prong collars or shock collars, period. Anyone can put on a prong collar and bully a dog, or shock a dog into a state of learned helplessness, but it takes a thorough understanding of canine behavior to change the way a dog learns, feels and reacts. Humane, modern dog training is based on science, and our fear-free, pain-free, positive reinforc
ement-based training approach ensures your dog receives the most innovative and expert training possible, while our compassion and dedication keeps our focus on the needs of you and your dog. When I decided to make the commitment to pursue a formal education in dog training I also committed to focusing my attention on educating the owners of the dogs. Once class is over it is up to you to continue your dog's learning, so it is my job to show you how, in a way that is easy to understand and won't take much time. Because if it’s not easy then you can’t do it, and if it’s not quick you won’t do it! Our motto: Training one end of the leash, educating the other. According to the Center for Canine Behavior Studies (CCBS), approximately 9 million dogs are born each year, and 4 million are abandoned or relinquished to rescues and shelters. Of those shelter dogs, an estimated 2.2 million are euthanized annually. The CCBS reports that behavior problems are the number 1 killer of dogs under the age of 3, while the National Council on Pet Population finds that most dogs are turned in to shelters for common behavior and training issues that could easily be solved with the assistance of a professional. In fact, research has found that training and socializing dogs when they're young can reduce or even eliminate behavior problems in the future. Our Teach & Train mission: Teach owners how to properly train their dogs so fewer dogs are relinquished to shelters.

"To put it bluntly, trying to force a dog into compliance in any abbreviated time span, absent a loving, attentive, understanding owner, is a recipe for disaster."
Adolescence is a challenging time for canines as well as humans. It's a period when our dogs most need our patience and understanding.
"Reactive dogs are dogs that become overly aroused by common daily stimuli. Reactivity is often confused with aggression."
Dogs who have issues with other dogs can learn to be calm around other dogs – and maybe even make dog friends.

"Puppies are remarkably talented at getting into things they shouldn’t but proactively puppy proofing your house can help."
Puppy proofing your home is an ongoing task. Puppies focuses change over time, and keeping up is like trying to hit a moving target.
"Although it may sound counterintuitive to promote the behavior, if puppies are not exposed to biting, they won’t learn to control their biting pressure during their early years."
Is your new pup biting everything? Learn effective ways to curb this behavior and teach bite inhibition.
"Here's a fun training game that boosts your dog's creativity and lets your dog burns some mental energy using a popular summer staple: a beach bucket!"
Do you have a dog that barrels out doorways or from the crate? What about from the car? This can be a dangerous behavior, but boundary training can help. Anything can be used as a boundary. A good meet and greet consists of the two dogs smoothly making muzzle to muzzle contact followed by some mutual rear investigation. Then either play will break out or the dogs will go their separate ways. A male may urinate on the next available vertical surface.
Meet and greets may feature stiffness, posturing and snarky stuff. The latter sometimes indicates some lack of social skill or confidence, or simply routine friction in normal dog interactions.
It’s a good general policy with unknown quantity dogs to break meet and greets off after several seconds, if the dogs don’t do so themselves. I recommend allowing posturing, stiffness or standing over, provided there is rapid enough behavior change, i.e. the dogs don’t get stuck in some volatile looking stance such as a stiff and growly T-position (perpendicular to each other with one dog’s chin or chest over withers of other). If there is some snarking or if they get stuck in some stiff posture, break them off. Happy talk them while walking away if one or both dogs are too stiff.
If you want to try again after breaking it off, wait a couple of minutes before re-engaging to let them cool off. Keep the dogs moving during the break and keep up the happy talk even as you disengage. Put the problem dog(s) through some obedience paces at some distance. Then try again.

"What many people don’t realize is that aggression is caused by stress. An assertive, aggressive dog attacks because he’s stressed by the intrusion of another dog or human into his territory. A fearful dog bites because he’s stressed by the approach of a human. An injured dog lacerates the hand of his rescuer because he’s stressed by pain."

Because dogs cannot talk, it is up to pet parents to notice the signs of pain so they can take their dog to the vet. Here’s how you can tell if your dog is in pain and what you can do to help.

A "U-Turn" is a great tool to have in your training repertoire. A U-Turn is exactly what it sounds like: You and your dog are walking forward, and on your cue, you both instantly turn 180 degrees and move in the opposite direction. Your dog turns because he knows your cue means: "Quick! We’re going to play the turn-around-really-fast-and-go-the-other-way game!" Your dog doesn’t turn because he hits the end of the leash. That would increase the tension and could elicit the very behavior you’re trying to avoid. He turns because he knows the game, hears the cue and almost without thinking, wheels away from trouble.
Like Watch, the action itself is simple, but it needs to be mastered to be truly useful. And like Watch, a U-Turn is another behavior that is incompatible with your dog barking, lunging or stiffening. A U-Turn differs from a Watch cue in that you use it when you know your dog will be too aroused to perform a Watch or has already barked or lunged at another dog. The goal of a U-Turn is to get you out of sticky situations, and if you and your dog master both the Watch and the U-Turn, you’ll be able to handle most of the situations that life can throw at you.

Roni has a history of attacking her housemate over food, especially in the kitchen. She and her people have worked very hard on Touch, Leave It, Engage/Disengage, all of which has culminated in a default Leave It/eye contact. She was so happy with her job well done that she sprinted out of the room to get her brand new Lamb Chop that took her all of 5 minutes to de-squeak! #dentlersdogtraining #pottstowndogtrainer #pisitivereinforcementdogtraining #clickertrainingfordogs #clicktreatrepeat #realmenweartreatpouches #bethesnackfeedernotthepackleader #noforce #nofear #nopain #noshockcollarneeded

Ivan is very reactive to animals on the TV and over the past several weeks he and his people have worked very hard to counter-condition this behavior. We started out by playing the Open Bar - clicking and treating whenever an animal came on screen - while he watched the small TV with the sound low in the kitchen. We gradually transitioned to watching the big TV with the sound on as we play the Engage/Disengage game (clicking and treating for him looking away from animals on the TV). In this video Ivan has chosen all by himself to lie on his bed and calmly watch horses (his spirit animal?). What do you do when your dog is doing something you don't like? Teach your dog to do something you do like! Summer gets excited when people get in and out of the pool, so trainer Kim and the kids are teaching her that staying calmly on the deck is a good thing!
Leo has been walked using a prong collar because he is a big boy and his owners felt they needed it to control him. But Leo has become reactive to things and the pain from the prong collar could be contributing to that reactivity. Today we fitted him with a harness and used food to teach him to walk nicely. We also used the food to make positive associations with things, like the strangers who were wearing the funny clothes and running the noisy machines as they cut down trees. This was our first session and, as you can see, you don't need pain to train, nor do harnesses cause a dog to pull. Training one end of the leash, educating the other.
Teddy is a very energetic 9-month old Labrador Retriever. One of the reasons we were contacted was because he pulls on leash. But with the right tools (a well-fitted front clip harness and yummy treats) we got him walking better in no time.
