>REACTIVITY<

Ms. June, pictured here, aces her final test for dog and human reactivity. Using mini educator was a game changer for June and her owners. It resolved a massive amount of conflict that they were experiencing. Why? CLEAR AND UNAMBIGUOUS COMMUNICATION.

When we hear a dog is reactive we tend to think it is aggressive. However, that’s only one possibility. Reactive dogs aren’t always mad or scared. Sometimes they are excited or amped. Sometimes the reaction is based on instinct or it has become a LEARNED BEHAVIOR. Either way, a dog who struggles with reactivity also struggle with stress and conflict. Either between them and the stimuli (human, dog, other animal, inanimate objects) OR with you, their owner. Honestly, it’s a whole mess of things.

Don’t lose hope! For most dogs, reactivity can be managed and alleviated.

Life is full of obstacles👇
For both people and our dogs! Teaching your dog to navigate obstacles can be a huge way to build your bond and develop critical problem solving skills. Just about every client I have run dogs through obstacle courses learn how to work in a more coordinated manner. It’s my favorite thing to teach and watch!

Keep it simple when it comes to training your dog👇
Stick to the basics. Don’t fret over the perfect training tool. The dog training world can be intimidating and overloaded with information. When it comes down to it all you need is a well fit collar, a leash, a crate, some treats, and something to keep the treats in. A clicker is an amazing tool as well.

As a balanced trainer this is my starting point with the majority of dogs I work with. For teaching basic tricks like sit, down, and recall these few tools can be invaluable. And crate training is a must.

Meet Lou! Lou is a middle aged Doberman with plenty of pep in her step! Lou has a wonderful and engaging personality. She is energetic and affectionate. Lou doesn’t know a stranger and if you toss ball with her you’ll be thick as thieves. She will do best in a home without other dogs or cats. If you want an adventuring buddy Lou is the dog for you! Please contact if you’re interested in adopting Lou!

When the turkey comes out of the oven🦃🤤👇
With Thanksgiving upon us we know our dogs will want to join in the festivities, mostly the eating part. I would rather dogs not eat people food unless it’s single/minimal ingredients. Also, nothing in life is free. So if you’re thinking about hooking your dog up with some delicious turkey make them work for it!

What you train with is important 👇

Sure, you can use just about anything. However, I suggest having designated treats, pouches, and beds for training.

It’s all about compatibility, streamlining, and accessibility for me. The products I use are easy to acquire and use and are affordable. Let’s talk about some things I recommend.

has some of the most versatile dog beds. They are dependable, easy to clean, can be indoor or outdoor, and they come in a variety of colors. Replacement covers are priced fairly, if needed, and their customer service is excellent.

has all sort of training gear for you and your dog. Their treat pouches are my go to for clients. They are easy to clean, have a magnetic pouch closure, multiple convenient ways to wear, and they have pockets to stow away your keys or baggies. Plus, they have A TON of color and pattern options to fit your aesthetic.

have some of the best treat choices. I highly recommend using meat based treats for training, especially with liver/organ meat. delivers many different protein options. I love that you can break them down easily or leave them whole, depending on the size of your dog.

Over all it’s up to your discretion as an owner, but these products are tried and true. At the minimum, a reliable treat pouch, highly motivating treats, and a comfortable bed will set you and your dog up for success!

Getting to graduation can be tough 👇

With consistency just about anything is possible, though. When it comes to training your dog, working with them regularly will pay off. Aim for a few short sessions a day focusing on specific behaviors or tasks!

Mila, pictured here, was a very nervous and shy American Bulldog. For our first few weeks she wouldn’t let me get closer than about 10 feet. She barked and growled. However, her owners worked diligently to change that. They saw it through and Mila graduated with flying colors!

Blaze can see your soul👇

Eye contact is an important aspect to understanding how your dog values you and your direction. When dogs look at you they are checking in. Sometimes, when a dog is on its own program, it won’t often make consistent eye contact.

To address this practice name games and focus exercises, rewarding for eye contact and response to name. It can go a long way!

Something about a beagle. This is Bucky Barnes Aka the Winter Soldier. He’s for sure a sleeper 😴💤 as an Uptown Hounds Academy student he often dozed off in the middle of lessons and wakes up ready to start over rock and roll!

Giving you dog a break during training is important. Especially when you are just starting. Dogs are always learning, even when we aren’t actively teaching them. So when you’re training your dog make sure you take breaks, especially if when they achieve something new or difficult!
