With the 4th of July quickly approaching,
Here are a few tips to help keep your dog safe:

1. Use a kennel, or if you don't have a kennel, a secluded room to put your dog in during the fireworks. Dark rooms are best. If the dog is not allowed inside be sure all gates are locked and there's no way for them to dig out or hop the fence.

2. Utilize a TV or radio while the fireworks are going off to drown out the loud booms.

3. Exercise your dog mentally and physically during the day to tire your dog before the fireworks show.

4. Be sure to have updated pictures of your dog and have a collar on them with contact information and the dogs name if the dog were somehow to escape.

5. If you know loud noises scare your dog, talk to your vet about medications that can help your dog relax.

The amount of concentration this pup is using just to be a good girl is amazing. She wants to do so many other things but knows that staying beside her owner and sitting when he stops walking is what she supposed to do. This is an example of a hyperactive happy go lucky dog.

when I'm not making Mouse Ears I'm teaching people how to manage their crazy puppies. This is what extreme concentration look like.

In my training sessions there are two R's I teach to dog owners to have a successful relationship with their pups.

Repetition and Retention.

The first Repetition meaning... Just once in a while isn't enough.

(Kind of like a diet... A healthy lunch on Tusday isn't going to cut it)

You should plan on doing several training sessions a day for a few weeks. It takes Consistent REPETITION to get results.

And secondly.... Retention!

That means..
When your pup isn't in a training session it is BEST for her or him to be in a kennel.

What this does is it gives them the opportunity to not be distracted from the education they are experiencing.

It helps them to process the lessons more efficiently and learn faster.

If you as a dog owner feel bad that your pup is in the kennel that's a sign for you to do a training session. This isn't forever, just a few weeks.

The goal while in training is to build a foundation of mutual respect and trust with your pup.

You can't let your emotions control you... because you're the example for them to control their emotions. This is a team effort and YOU ARE THE LEADER!

THE BIG GOAL we work towards is not just coexisting BUT actually enriching your pup and setting up a great functional relationship for many years to come.
