Batta Cats

Batta Cats We are a non-profit with the goal of assisting our community members with TNR. In between, we like to showcase our personal kitties as well as our fosters.

Any cat that enters the Batta house will always be a Batta cat. Starting with our sweet Jack and Coco that made the move from our apartment into our house. Jack & Coco were about 7 years old when we moved. We had the privilege of living as a family until they were 18 in 2014. Then it was time to say goodbye. On the heels of Jack & Coco came two tiny babies that were found by our niece. They were o

nly 2-3 weeks old and were bottle babies. We didn't know if we would keep them but after a few days, we couldn't not keep them. So we welcomed Pepé and Penelope to our family. One year later, we decided to try fostering kittens and then the fun really began. Pepé & Penelope were at a good age to be socialized with kittens. They were able to play, teach, and be annoyed by kittens. Since then, we have had a revolving door of wonderful furballs, some very young, some older, but all need purrmanent homes. Along the way we have "foster failed" and welcomed two more furkids to the family, Slade and Mini. This is the page where you can learn more about Pepé,Penelope, Slade, and Mini and their numerous houseguests. If you ever see a foster cat you are interested in, feel free to inquire and we can point you in the direction to give the Batta Cat a furrever home.

THIS is a great and informative post. Kitten season is never over BUT we do get a little bit of a reprieve during winter. Luckily, in Ohio, we can typically still trap year round. We have mild winters and yo-yo temperatures. That, with some decent shelters in place, means Ohio winters are the purrfect time to TNR (in our opinion. I’m sure some will debate this but we have done this since we started without any problems.) THINK when you trap in winter. Look at the forecast. If we are going to have some pretty bitter cold days, prepare to kennel (dog kennels work great) your freshly snipped kitties until the cold snap is over. For us Ohioans, that could mean only 10 hours 😂!

We LOVE this time of year! 🍁🍂Know why? Theoretically, as the amount of daylight decreases, fewer kittens will be conceived. Although kitten season is NEVER over, for a few months, we hope to get a break from an overwhelming number of litters of kittens needing rescue and forever homes.

Female cats are “seasonally polyestrous," meaning they have multiple estrus cycles ("heat" cycles) during the breeding season. As the amount of daylight begins to increase with the winter solstice (12/21), the reproductive cycle of intact females kicks into gear, and most will go into heat by late January. A female cat will continue to go into heat every 1 to 2 weeks until she gets pregnant, up until the amount of daylight decreases (October). The feline gestation period is about 63 days, which is why we typically see the first kittens of the season arriving in late March. (Remember that a kitten becomes sexually mature at 4 months of age!)

If your climate allows, NOW is the ideal time to spay and neuter feral and stray cats to get ahead of kitten season and end the breeding cycle before it starts. If you are in a cold climate and spaying is not advised because of potential harm to the females, you can start working on the males. (It takes two!) If nothing else, take inventory and restock your supplies. Make a plan!

We are asked a lot about our shelters and about them being a single hole entry. This is why!

It's ! 🌬️❄️🏠🌡️🐈 Are two doors better than one for cat shelters? We say NO! Two doors could offer an additional escape route from predators stalking a cat shelter, but drawbacks include excessive heat loss, more moisture coming in, and an extra entrance for the cats to monitor. And cats shouldn't have to flee their cozy sleeping quarters if a coyote, dog, or other predator comes around. We recommend a 1-door shelter that's part of a holistic colony management plan to maximize both safety and comfort for cats. Strategies include:

• Make shelter doors small (5x5 inches square or 5.5 inches round) to keep cats safe and warm. Small doors minimize heat loss and are big enough for cats, but they keep larger animals out.
• Give cats protected access to shelters by adding a mudroom, entry tunnel, or breezeway. Or have the door face a wall or fence to create a cat-width safety corridor.
• Feed according to best practices (on a schedule, no leftovers) to discourage mooching critters from hanging around.
• Place shelters away from your feeding station in case wildlife come by for fresh water.

A winter shelter should let cats conserve their energy and take refuge from the cold, cruel world. If a predator ever sniffs around a well-built, well-placed, 1-door shelter, the cats inside can just hunker down and wait for them to get bored and go away.

Miss Nina has a strong paw when it comes to her toilet activities so we finally switched to a high-walled box. Problem solved right? Welll, she thought different apparently.

In spite of her very effective covering of stuff in the box, she is a very good and sweet girl who has been officially cleared for adoption. No more snot, lots of headbutts and love is what we get from her! Who’s ready for a sweet girl looking for a second chance at life?

Nina is FIV+, spayed, vaccinated, and ready for love! She does well around other cats and would be a good playmate.

Food Grade DE is an EXCELLENT and AFFORDABLE way to control pests (both external and internal.) We suggest colony feeders, especially, add this to food and shelters since many times the cats are too skittish and feral to apply a topical flea preventative.
You can purchase anywhere but we love Amazon because of the convenience. A decent size bag is fairly inexpensive and last a long time.

Is Diatomaceous Earth Safe for Cats?
May 29, 2020 by David Fields

No one likes fleas, ticks, bedbugs, ants, and other creepy biters that invade your home. If you have a cat or multiple cats, you’re likely to attract these nuisances. Perhaps you have tried to rid your home of these bugs with the latest bug killer, but you’re worried about the poison harming your cat.

Diatomaceous earth is an effective way to get rid of bugs without poison and could be the answer you’re looking for. Yes, the good news is diatomaceous earth is completely safe and even beneficial for most cats if used properly.

What is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous earth (also known as DE) is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. A diatom’s skeleton is called silica. Over a long period of time, diatoms collect in a body of water’s sediment, and when exposed to oxygen and water, they chemically react and become silicon dioxide.

The silica deposits are then mined from these sediments because of its natural defense against bed bugs, cockroaches, crickets, fleas, spiders, ticks, and other pests. Diatomaceous earth resembles a white powder and can be found at most pet and gardening stores.

Here’s how it works: Diatomaceous earth emits glasslike silica shards to cut through and dry out an insect’s exoskeleton. The microscopic glass edges are so tiny and harmless to anything bigger than a bug. DE does not emit noxious vapors or harm anything that it comes in contact with.

Diatomaceous Earth Grades
Diatomaceous earth is commercially sold in four grades. IT’S IMPORTANT YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCES so you can know how each one is made. They are Pure Food Grade DE, Crawling Insect Control DE, Pool Grade DE, and other DE blends.

THE ONLY ONE that is SAFE FOR CATS is Food Grade DE.

Is Diatomaceous Earth Safe for Cats?
Yes, most of the time. Kittens, who are less than two pounds, should not be exposed to DE. DE can be used to kill fleas and other bugs both internally and externally, as a supplement in your cat’s food, and even in cat litter.

Diatomaceous Earth for Fleas on Cats
First of all, make sure you use food grade DE for flea control. It’s an effective, all-natural pesticide against anything with an exoskeleton. Also, insects cannot build up a resistance to DE like they can a chemical pesticide, and it won’t lose its effectiveness over time.

All you do is sprinkle DE on your carpets, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else you may have fleas. Let it sit for three days and then vacuum it up. (Don’t worry; it won’t stain.) You should repeat this process every week for 30 days to ensure that the eggs and larvae are destroyed, as well as the adult fleas.

If your cat already has fleas, you can apply DE to her coat. Put some on your palm and then rub your hands together. Then rub the powder onto your cat’s head, avoiding her nose, eyes, and mouth. Apply it behind her ears, and then down her neck to her chin. Massage the powder down her back, on her tail, legs, and belly. Fleas normally die within four hours of application, but don’t bathe your cat for 48-72 hours. After 72 hours, bathe your cat to get rid of the dead fleas, and use a flea comb to brush off any remaining fleas or eggs. You can repeat this process twice a week for a month to ensure that all the fleas are gone.

Diatomaceous Earth as a Supplement for your Cat
While DE is more commonly used for flea prevention, many cat owners add small amounts to their cat’s diet. There are numerous benefits here. DE contains calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals that contribute to a healthier coat, improved appetite and metabolism, and better digestion. Also, DE can be given to your cat as a natural way to get rid of worms and internal parasites. Contact your veterinarian for recommendations and dosage information.

How Much Diatomaceous Earth for Cats
To supplement your cat’s diet, use only food grade DE, as other types are not safe for consumption. Your cat’s size will determine the DE dosage:
* Small cats and kittens (2-6 ½ lbs.) should get ½ tsp of food grade DE
* Full grown cats (7-13 lbs.) should get 1 tsp of food grade DE
* Large cats (more than 13 lbs.) should get 1 ½ tsp of food grade DE

DO NOTE that if kittens are still nursing, DON’T add DE to their diet until they move to solid food. If your cat eats canned food, simply mix DE in with it. Dry food may be a little trickier, because cats may not eat it if there’s white powder covering their food. In this case, you could either mix the DE in with the dry food in a Ziplock bag and shake it up, or mix the DE with a quarter cup of water and then pour it over the cat’s dry food to coat it.

Diatomaceous Earth to Remove Cat Litter Odor
DE is also a great odor control for cat litter. In addition, it is more absorbent than clay-based litter. You can look for cat litter that already has it in there, or you can simply spread a thin layer of food grade DE to the bottom of the litter box before you pour in the litter. Your cat’s litter will stay fresher longer while decreasing odor.

Are There Any Risks with Using Diatomaceous Earth?
As long as you use food grade GE, there are no known risks in using it for cats. When applying it to her coat, use a minimal amount the first time and make sure you don’t get it in her eyes. Also, since it is so absorbent, it may irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs, but it is not harmful.

CONCLUSION
Diatomaceous earth has wonderful, beneficial uses for your cat’s overall health. MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE FOOD GRADE GE and use as directed.

Our Story

Batta Cats started as a page after a friend asked for help with a stray male cat. This cat would find his way to her balcony for a meal every night. She did not have the space to bring him in so, because we already had a revolving door of foster cats, (plus 4 of our own) I said sure. We were able to get him in a carrier and I whisked him home. He was torn up. Open wound around his neck, scratches, fur looked thin, he was on the thin side, but still a big cat. My friend was calling him Bobby so we named him Bobby McGee. I took Bobby McGee to the vet as soon as possible to get him vaccinated and neutered and learned he was FIV+. That was ok by me but not ok with the adoption center I fostered and volunteered with (at the time. They have since began taking FIV+ cats! YAY) So Bobby McGee became my foster that I now needed to find a home for. That’s when Batta Cats, the page, came about. It was a resource to find Bobby McGee a home. After a few months and some bleak prospects, we decided Bobby found his home with us and we welcomed our 5th cat to our family.

Bobby McGee was a GREAT cat. He cuddled on us like a baby, purred, drooled, was so sweet with all the other cats. Just a big, gentle dude. We loved him so much. He did well with the continued revolving door of fosters, tolerated the bratty kittens, and was never, ever, mean or aggressive to any of the baby cats.

Fast forward to only 1 1/2 years later, February 2019. Bobby was looking a little thin and sleeping a lot. We took him to the vet and learned he was dehydrated and not doing well. He was hospitalized for several days while we had an out of town trip and the vets wondered if he had FIP. Upon our return we put him on steroids and brought him home. After about 2-3 days, he bounced out of it, much to our relief. A few months later, same thing. He lost interest in food so we bought anything and everything to encourage food. Back on steroids and the vet said they thought it was just from the FIV. We already thought we would have to say goodbye once, made an appointment to say goodbye the second time and canceled it. Finally we went to another vet to get a second opinion. An ultrasound was conducted and it was confirmed, our sweet boy had Lymphoma. Absolute heartbreak. Because we knew he had already been battling this for several months, we chose to give Bobby lots of love and comfort. A few weeks later, we said our tearful goodbyes and continue to shed tears to this day for the handsome guy with the beat up ears, fantastic cuddles, and drool for days.

After Bobby crossed, it became even more of a mission to help cats like Bobby. The abandoned, “stray,” lost, feral, community cat. I had already begun to volunteer at another organization learning to TNR. I started to do it on my own when I could and became very passionate about these forgotten souls. Batta Cats could do more than just be spoiled kitties that came into our household. Batta Cats could make Bobby McGee proud. Batta Cats can help more community cats.
