Wear your green and skip on over to Frog Level Brewing on Saturday. It will be a fun packed day to raise funds to rebuild the outdoor deck that was demolished by Helene. Barkriffic will have a table filled with your dog's favorite dog treats and a selection of St. Patrick bandanas, in case you forgot to wear your ☘️. Barkriffic has also been nominated for the best Dog Bakery so be sure to vote!

I’m overjoyed with being nominated for the best dog bakery in Haywood County! Competing against the big storefront in downtown Waynesville is a bit ruff, so I’d be over the moon if you could throw me a vote every day! Our tasty treats are crafted right here in Haywood County, using local goodies to help other small businesses fetch some success too. A huge thank you to everyone who’s bought our treats and turned their pups into happy tail-waggers!

Five months after Helene, local businesses are still rebuilding and need our help! Frog Level Brewery is extremely dog friendly and is also supportive of my small businesses. Please stop by Frog Level Brewery on Saturday, March 15th. (or any other day) for great food, beer, and music). Barkriffic will be there with lots of dog treats, so you can stock up!

It's just a peak behind the scenes at Barkriffic. When I'm cutting bandanas out, it's easier to throw the discarded scraps on the floor and let Guinness, who is more than eager, pick them up. For those who don't know, Guinness is my trained service dog who absolutely loves to be of service.

Meet Guinness, the official taste tester of Barkriffic! If a treat doesn’t pass his approval, it never leaves our test kitchen. Many of you may have already met Guinness, especially if you’ve attended the Farmer’s Market.

Guinness has been by my side for the past seven years—and hopefully for many more to come. Not only is he the official taste tester, but he is also my trained mobility service dog. As a half golden retriever, half labrador retriever, he embodies the best qualities of both breeds—except for one… unlike any labrador I’ve ever had, Guinness is a very picky eater! That’s what makes him perfect for the job.

He’s always eager to help in the kitchen, whether it’s picking up dropped utensils, sampling tidbits, licking beaters, or overseeing the baking process. His favorite treats? Anything with duck or elk!

Heart throbs! We have all had that one special one who stole a piece of our heart. Mine just happens to a Javier, my Latin Lover. Javier, a golden retriever lab mix came into my life in 2000 As a guide dog puppy in training through Guide Dogs for the Blind. I knew from the moment he arrived and I held him he was the one!



Javier’s slated destiny was to become a working guide dog for Guide Dog’s for the Blind but he decided on an alternative path in life. For fourteen months, Javier and I worked through the steps of socialization, puppy manners and guide dog etiquette. Bi-weekly meetings with the trainer from guide dogs, practice sessions and many, many outings on public transportation including boats, trains and flying. Even Disneyland!

Then the fateful day arrived I had to return him to the Guide Dog Campus where he would begin spend approx. a year in his vigorous formal Guide Dog training.

Each month I would receive his “report card” on his advancement through the phases. All was going superb until phase eight. He just couldn’t resist that temptation of food. The trainers did their very best to work through his obsession but he had food on his brain!

As his puppy raiser, I was given the opportunity to have him return to me, Already, having another puppy in training, Javier was placed as in a nursing home I frequently worked at as a facility dog (The director and staff all knew and loved him as a puppy he was always with me when I worked there) I thought it would be the best of both worlds he could still be a working dog and I would be able to see him. Well….his food obsession persisted he was scavenging food from the patients. Once again, I get a call it’s not working out. Fate had it, Javier was meant to be mine.

For the next twelve years, Javier and I lived our best life! We traveled the pacific coast highway, camped at the ocean, visited San Franciso, moved across the country and had so many wonderful adventures.

His obsession with food never ceased (it’s a miracle he never got sick or had to have his stomach pumped) just to name a few he ate a five-pound bag of flour, snuck into a neighbor’s house and stole a pizza, ate his was through a ups package to find a box of See’s chocolate and three pounds of salami. And those are only a few highlights. He even learned to open the refrigerator which I eventually had to put baby locks on.
