Chinchillas as Pets: A Comprehensive Guide
Chinchillas are unique and fascinating creatures, but they require specialized care to thrive as pets. Here's what you need to know:
Housing:
* Spacious cage: Chinchillas are active and need plenty of room to jump and explore. A multi-level cage with solid floors is ideal, with a minimum size of 4ft x 2ft x 3ft.
* Temperature control: They are sensitive to heat and humidity. Aim for a cool, well-ventilated environment between 60-70°F.
* Safe enrichment: Provide plenty of hiding spots, chew toys, and a dust bath for their fur. Avoid plastic accessories that they could chew and ingest.
Diet:
* High-quality hay: Timothy hay should be the foundation of their diet, available 24/7.
* Specialized pellets: Supplement with a small amount of chinchilla pellets formulated for their nutritional needs.
* Treats: Occasional treats like rose hips or dried herbs can be offered in moderation. Avoid sugary or high-fat treats.
Other Important Considerations:
* Handling: Chinchillas are delicate and prefer not to be held frequently. When handling, support their body fully and avoid grabbing their fur.
* Socialization: They are social animals and do best in pairs or small groups.
* Veterinary care: Find an exotic vet experienced with chinchillas for regular checkups and any health issues.
* Commitment: Chinchillas can live up to 20 years, so ensure you can provide long-term care.
Remember: Chinchillas are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. They also have sensitive hearing, so keep their environment quiet and calm.
If you can provide the right environment and care, chinchillas can make rewarding and entertaining companions.

Here's some of the recent surrenders to the Rescue...LOTS of people are having hard times out there. If you need help, please let us know- we're discreet, and we can help deal with many problems in ways that will allow you to hopefully keep the animals you love!
Keep in mind these pics are fresh, when the animal was first brought in and processed, some may be slim, underfed, or have other issues- THAT is what we strive to fix and make better...and yes, they will be up for adoption eventually. Vet and rehab denote the time it takes as well as quarantine

Our Story

Snakes Alive Rescue was started in 1991 in Norman, OK. At that time the City Of Norman animal shelter started calling us because they were receiving large numbers of calls for unwanted reptiles. We started taking the reptiles in, and soon, Snakes Alive was born. Back then, most of the reptiles rescued were animals that either became too large or too aggressive. It is still, in large part, the same way today. But, sadly there are more and more cases of neglect and abuse. As more people decide to keep reptiles as pets, more people also decide that reptiles aren't for them... THAT is where Snakes Alive steps in. We take the animals in, nurse them back to health, and then find good, responsible homes and facilities for them. We charge a nominal re homing fee based on the the cost to cover any medical bills incurred by them and food costs. We have the ability to take and care for any reptile, amphibian, or exotic...from frogs, turtles, dragons and geckos to pythons, boas, ferrets, birds, rabbits, pigs, rodents, marsupials and primates.

We don’t just rescue snakes!!! We also rescue an array of exotics- chinchillas, rabbits, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, ferrets, amphibians, invertebrates, arachnids, birds, lizards, even pot bellied pigs! We have a myriad of amazing creatures that we help find forever homes for. Snakes Alive is located outside Oklahoma City in the bustling metropolis of McLoud,OK. Michael and his wife Brittney enjoy the highs and lows that running the rescue bring...and at the end of the day, are glad they managed to help out the animals they have.
