Live Real Talk, Important SAHH update
Miracle loves costco food pick up day. Soon he will be our official taste tester!
On November 11, 2019 my life and the lives of countless others were forever changed. That was the day we met Bobby, a white broad breasted turkey whose life span is reported to be 4 to 5 years. Bobby was wandering down a road in Chula Vista and was picked up by animal control who then asked us to take him. He was brought to the sanctuary and that is where his story begins really. Handsome, confident, and the day I proclaimed “He’s going to be our hugging turkey”! I have no idea where that came from but Bobby must have understood and hug people he did.
Bobby loved people, but pretty girls were his weakness. At group events, he’d inevitably be at the center, fixated on a pretty girl he’d follow around all day.
We soon began calling him Mayor Bobby. He was the social butterfly, strutting his stuff and being sure to greet everyone. If one lingered at the front gate too long Bobby would strut down there and hurry them along.
He loved love; he went from nearly being Thanksgiving dinner to becoming a turkey ambassador, the first real turkey many people had seen, and they left vowing to never eat turkey again.
Bobby’s impact was so significant that he was featured in a childrens book called, Karma Cats to the Rescue, written by Kathleen Kastner.
Over the last few months, we watched Bobby slow down. We knew our time with him was short. When Archie, his best friend, started picking on him, we knew we had to keep him safe, so we moved Bobby to our newly developed, not-quite-finished recovery area. There, he had a roomy suite, a comfy bed, maid service, and room service. He went for short, supervised walks. He loved the pampered life, and he seemed to stabilize.
On Wednesday, August 28th, 2024, we took Bobby out for sunshine and pool time. When he was ready to get out, Bobby stepped out of the pool, lifted his body to stretch, and collapsed. He was gone immediately. Bobby crossed the rainbow bridge at 10:30 a.m. The world became a little darker as his lig

Poor Cash, to top off the discomfort of the parasites he is allergic to, he had his feet trimmed and is too short causing him quite a lot of pain. We need to order him Cloud boots to take the pressure off the sole. My heart just breaks watching him be in this much pain.

We are living in some very crazy times. Things are happening that are unusual, anomaly’s so to speak.
Our SAHH family has taken a lot of hits, we’ve had a lot of sadness and a lot of heartache and financial woes like no other.
As you know we have been struggling with health issues with our boy, Cash. Starting over a year ago he has had so many unusual things happening. We have had different vets out to help him multiple times. Today our vet will be here again at 9am. This time for both, Cash and Harley.
I have mentioned things have been odd. Poor Cash can’t catch a break. But now I have a name to the face of his issues. Onchocerciasis. Parasite hell.
Onchocerciasis is a dermatitis in equines caused by and reproduced by adult Onchocerca. The parasites are transmitted by various biting flies. Diagnosis can be performed by histology or skin scraping to identify the microfilariae. Cash has been receiving ongoing treatment.
What you see in this video is one desperate horse trying to make it stop. He just wants it to stop and now he has about shredded his “parts” and it’s heartbreaking!
And then we have Harley… the video speaks louder than I ever could. He’s had an abscess, opened and drained but something more is going on and we will find out today once the vet sees him also.
I don’t know what this vet visit will cost yet but we need your help as we don’t have the funds to pay it. Please, if you can help donate any amount to PayPal or Venmo @ sahh4life *note for Cash & Harley.
I will update just as soon as I can! Thank you for your support and loving our residents!
