Beautifully said! Quit souring your recall!

Best tip I can give you if you want a reliable recall with your dog?

Stop giving him reasons to NOT want to come back to you.

So often we call our dogs and do the following -

- bring them inside
- crate them
- put them back on leash
- physically pet them and hug them (a lot of dogs reaallllly don't like this even though WE do!)
- take something from them
- check them for ticks
- wipe their eye boogers
- remove them from the fun

If you've done one or any of these, you've taken a huge deduction out of your dogs "recall account" balance. YES, EVEN IF YOU USED FOOD WHEN THEY CAME BACK! Food - even though very rewarding - is rarely as reinforcing as freedom to dog!

There are many other factors to help you have a reliable recall with your dog, but this is the most important one of them all. STOP calling your dog and then doing something they don't find reinforcing, even if you treat them anyway. Often times, the food very quickly becomes not worth it to your dog, and you find yourself at 5am on your porch in your bathrobe screaming "COME!" rattling a bag of treats just to up the ante more and more, only to have your dog look at you like "Yeah, no, I've been there before human - see ya!"

Build your recall account by calling your dog, rewarding them, and then letting them GO BACK to whatever they were doing before, and do that many more times than times that you actually do have to stop their fun. Walk over while they are chewing on a stick, toss them a treat and tell them what a great find it is, and then walk away. Teach your dog that coming to you, having cool stuff around you (water logged stick, a soggy ball they just found etc) doesn’t always mean their fun is over and you’re going to remove them or the item.

While doing all this, if you’re not sure that your dog is safe to be off leash or reliable DONT let them off leash. Use a long dragline, even in the yard, so you can just bring them to you rather than chase them around or run the risk of them taking off.

Reliable recall doesn’t just happen. It takes time and patience and lots of repetitions. Keep treating, keep letting them have fun, keep your sense of humor!

Going out for a sniff walk is similar to reading the local news or scrolling social media to dogs. Giving your dog time to smell bushes and lightpoles gives them a chance to take in information, which engages their brain. Let your pup take the extra couple of seconds to gather more info! They will come back from the walk more tired than if they had just jogged straight the whole time.

For social dogs, play is an essential part of their day. For many dogs, even social ones, dog parks are not a safe place to get proper social interaction. Dogs all throughout the spectrum of sociability, and dogs that love playing but never learned how to set boundaries or accept others’ boundaries safely are a common type of visitor to the dog park. How can we ensure that our playful dogs get some social time that doesn’t end in a dog fight with a stranger? Play dates! Set up a time to visit a safe secure place with a dog or two that you know, and more importantly are sure have manners and a social confidence that allows them to avoid escalating disagreements to a dangerous interaction. A good place to have play dates is a secure backyard— for some dogs it’s best if it’s not THEIR backyard, but a friend’s yard isn’t a bad idea! Another option is a SniffSpot near you!

Update: Max is home!

Found dog; on Oakbrook/Lakeview in Cordelia. Has chip; currently waiting for information. He’ll be at my house until further notice. Small white chihuahua/terrier, old.

Footnote: get identification on your pets RIGHT NOW. Even if it’s a string with a piece of tape with your number on it, anything is better than nothing. Kind neighbors are trying to help, and we get stuck with dogs we don’t have a place for. I would love to walk the dogs I find right down the street to their home, but I can’t when I don’t know where home is!

Happy July! The big fireworks day is coming fast— it’s probably too late to train your pup to be comfortable with fireworks this year, so if they hate them, let’s start making plans for how to keep them safe and secure during this scary time.
- Make a safe place indoors to comfort them, maybe a cozy space in a bathroom or closet to hide away in.
- Play some calming music, or if your dog is comfortable with the tv being noisy, you could play some shows that have a bit more action that will drown out the noise outside.
- Try to keep them safe indoors so that a big firework doesn’t make them panic and run away. Potty them while it’s still light outside, and if you have to go somewhere other than a secure backyard, have your dog on a secure body harness and good leash. Don’t take chances!
- Contact us to talk about confidence training for the next fireworks event!

Train the dog and cook at the same time?

Sometimes we have to multitask to give dogs real-life training. I can’t stand having to wash my hands more than I already have to when cooking, so here’s a : use a spoon to deliver already broken or small sized treats to your dog for keeping 4 paws on the floor, or even better, relaxing on their designated place and staying out from underfoot!

You can use a gate or tether to ensure safety first, but as they get more advanced with training outside of the distracting kitchen, they can do it on their own with a little payment from you!

Believe it or not, this dog is dealing with stress at the time this photo was taken. Her world is growing as her “stress bucket” becomes more flexible, but she was about at her limit as we turned the corner to get home from our short walk around the block. She made it easier for me to believe how someone who doesn’t know the more subtle indicators might look at a dog and think they are not stressed, or even happy! I couldn’t capture it perfectly in movement, but Lexi’s stressed panting often looks like a quite happy smile— not full on teeth, but her cheeks pull up so her mouth curves and she looks like she’s happy, by human standards. Dogs have a number of small signs that add up to expressing emotions. Knowing the wide array that you may see and how those physical expressions pair with one another can help us as handlers, trainers, and dog enthusiasts read dogs better and help them to experience our world in a truly enjoyable way.

One of the nice ways you can help out your dog walker is to collect all the things they might need in one place— like a little basket up on the counter, or in a closet! That way, your pups can get out the door and on their adventure smoothly! Can-Do Canine! also loves leaving a little note in a notebook about how things went for more daily walks, so we don’t always fill up your phone with texts! We still find great joy in sending a cute photo now and then!

Learning to relax in place can be easier with a raised surface— raised dog beds are a favorite of ours to train on! The difference often creates a more clear picture of what your dog’s “job” in a boundary game like this!

We’re doing tricks for treats!

Here’s a reminder to keep safety in mind this holiday. At the door, keep a gate if your dog is going to be a costume judge, to prevent bolting out the door! If your dog is more shy and doesn’t like seeing all the scary kids, settle them in another room with a treat toy for dinner! And with all that, keep them out of the human treats!

Can-Do Canine! Is looking for dog walkers to join the team in Solano County!

Immediately, we are in need of someone who can work Wednesdays, for a couple hours in the middle of the day. Hours would be around 9 am-noon. More work can be added on as our ability to serve increases!

The next day we need to fill, by beginning of November, is Monday. As of this week, again, the hours would be a little light, mid-morning to midday.

The work is easy, we just need someone reliable and trustworthy. On-the-job learning. A great number of friendly dogs. Walkers should be comfortable with dogs of all sizes and understand basic dog body language.

Pay is by the walk— $25 for a half hour, $50 for full. You do need your own transportation!
