Thoughtful Thursday: The Power of One and Done

Flash flies away from me when I give her the search cue. She hunts diligently through vehicles, distractions, humans talking in her area, does a beautiful nose hook into odor where she sources, sits promptly, and turns into a statue.

I breathe.
That was amazing.

She holds her trained final response until I give her secondary reinforcer and she peels off, running after her toy as I throw it.

As she's running away I look at my training group and say "We are done."

There are two more hides out for her. I am not going to run them. I spend the next several minutes playing with my dog, put her in the car, then collect the hides still out. I could run them, but why?

Flash far exceeded my expectations. She put all of the individual pieces together, worked through distractions and diversions that were in her search area and completed the task. The entire chain was pristine and stopping allows me to thoughtfully adjust my goals for the next training session. This is the power of one and done.

Is doing another one at this time more about me getting the ego boost or is it going to benefit my training?

At this time in our training, having that one perfect run is more important to me than running her on more hides. Making that decision is hard, because we always want to do 'just one more'.

Just because you have the hides set out, doesn't mean you have to run them all. Train strategically. Run your training, do not let your training run you.

We've started back Thursday night sessions at . We'll be offering private sessions 7-8pm and Continuing Scent Work classes 8-930pm.

Tonight Tate showed how he can problem solve and worked to source behind our chairs. Source happened to be my kit on a grooming table that I thought would be out of the way and too high for him! Never doubt the power of odor.

Three days of National Association of Canine Scent Work trial judging in the books. NW3 Friday, NW2 on Saturday, and NW1 on Sunday. HUGE shout out to Anne Rosenberg for hosting the best trials in South Jersey, regardless of venue. Special thanks to the all volunteer army and their leader Lisa Iffland and Sniff Sniff Hooray for being an amazing volunteer coordinator, trials can't happen without volunteers. Thanks again to Linda Murphy for being such an awesome judge, mentor, and friend. Thanks to Linda Harrison and Marty Smith for being such an awesome score room team. And most of all thanks to Carol Noriega for being such an amazing leader. She created challenging searches, and ran such a smooth trial in record time!

The reason I come back to judge trials are all these ladies, and the amazing competitors, again mostly ladies. No matter the weather or what was going on these ladies drive on and put in work.

This Scent Work Tribe is strong.

Day two of National Association of Canine Scent Work trial judging in the Books. NW2 Vehicles and Exteriors in 95 degree heat with feels like temp of 105.

Some thing I noticed that I thought was worth discussing was vehicle search strategies. What we saw that was really great was teams that made a choice to search the group of cars a "One" whole search from the exteriors of the vehicles. This allowed them to cover the area quickly and encounter the hides.

One other strategy we observed was teams searching down the middle and breaking right or left to search down and around the outside.

Both of the strategies worked well. When you compare this to other strategies such as detailing each car, these two take less time and still cover most of the productive areas of the search.

Dogs can source the hides well and you don't waste effort.

Great job today by all.

Getting ready to head out for day #2 of NACSW trials in Mt Laurel NJ and saw this shared by Cynthia Langford. Got me thinking how impactfull this could be for handlers this weekend. If you have to ask this multiple times is your training really preparing you for trial? Or do you not trust your training? Trust your dog is a cute slogan. However, training competence builds trial confidence. As the saying goes in the military; Sweat more in peace time bleed less in war. Not that trials are war by any stretch but the message is clear, don't blame your dog when you're not ready.

This past Saturday I had the privilege of judging for the Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club at the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds. To see many of my students and scent work friends is always great. I'm so proud that the ladies from my Scent Work Sunday classes at Alpha & Omega Working Dogs have grown into an amazing tribe. These ladies started out with little to no experience and have begun competing in trials, and running/hosting trials. I'd like to thank Natalie Mortelmans Colucci for her patience the chance to judge.

I'd love to thank Chrisy Main Morgan for being Trial Secretary and Score Room. She is one of the best people I've met in the sport. Her business Triple Q Trial Secretary is a great way to share her ability and attitude.

I'd like to thank the other judges as well for putting up with me for a day!

Thanks to the all volunteer army who without their dedication and service trials would never happen. In particular I'd like to thank Benne Baumann of House Boxer of House Bairon and House Bairon Canine Fitness Training. It was great to see him expediting competitors and volunteers.

Finally I'm so proud of my ladies who competed this weekend.

Here's some stats;
Crash got 2 container Qs, 1 1st place. 2Qs in buried, also 1st & 4th, exterior 1 Q 4th place. 2 Qs in Interior Novice & 2nd & 4th place and His first AKC Scent Work title. Not bad for a dog another trainer said could never do this.

Koa got 1 Q in Excellent Containers, 2 Qs in Buried (SBA title), 2 Qs in Interior (SIA) and 1 Q in Exterior. He got 3 third place placements. So, he needs one more Q in Exterior to finish his overall Advanced Title (SWA).

Cosmo the Basenji trialed in advanced for the first time and got 3 q’s out of 6. And got the overall novice title at 18 months old.

Kiran Q’d in 8 runs. Got a fault for stepping onto the hot box and smashing it 😬, but he placed in the second container search (2nd). He got one #1 and four #2 placements. Got all four novice titles and his novice overall and one leg toward novice elite in each element.

Zena got her Novice Container title and a 4th place, as well as getting her Novice Buried title with a 3rd place. She got one qualifying score in Novice Interior and also Novice Exterior.

If I missed anything ladies let me know.

I'm so proud of the work they put in. I'm humbled that anyone would train with me, and more so that they are successful.

Love what Chad has to say about this.

Independence or search and destroy? A term I often hear in scent detection training is “independence.” However, when I observe some training sessions, what I see isn't true independence. Instead, the dog is on a search and destroy mission, behaving like a bull in a china shop—rushing through areas, leaving sections unchecked, and repeating searches in the same spots. This is mistakenly labeled as independence.

True independence requires training. We wouldn't expect a novice in any profession, whether law enforcement, culinary arts, plumbing, or electrical work, to operate independently right away. Why not? Because they need training, certification, and experience to meet specific standards before they can work without supervision. Similarly, our dogs need to be taught, trained, and proofed in all aspects of their work. We must guide them to be independent in various search scenarios, including outdoor environments, vehicles, interiors, and specific areas like bedrooms.

I believe in free shaping during the foundation stages or when doing remedial training. However, this perspective is aimed at dogs conducting real-world searches.

I said what I said. No matter the method, we need to understand that the game is about wiring our dogs brain to understand that no matter the odor, indicating that they've encountered or found that trained odor will lead to reinforcement of that indication behavior.

Then we start to proof that understanding everywhere.

Building Integrity.

Whatever you "Seek" we'll train your dog to find! At Integrity Nose Worx LLC, our Mission is to introduce the pet dog community to the art and science of Professional K9 Detection. Scent Work, Nose Work, or Scent Detection is a fun activity for dogs and their humans that builds rapport and challenges you and your dog as a team. If your dog is shy, reactive, or civil and motivated this sport can be for you. Our Goal is that is to make scent sports accessible to every dog.

At Integrity Nose Worx our logo represents a dogs nose going into a hole in an odor box. The foundation of our method is building from the indication behavior using boxes or tubes. With markers we build a clear, conflict free, commitment to odor. Once that's done we move into progressing dogs logically through searching. Dogs know how to use their nose we just need to show them what we want them to do with it. Blending years of Military and Police Detection Training with the Sport of Scent Work, we use marker based techniques that translate into the real world.

The X in our name represents the intersection of Sport, Police, and Military detection methods. Blending years of military and police canine experience with the sport of Scent Work, we’ve become AKC and National Association of Canine Scent Work Judges. This allows us to train the dog you have to become the detection dog you want.

At Integrity Nose Work we train you for Scent Work Trial Challenges and Operational Canine needs. We believe that training competence builds trial and operational confidence.
