Happy National Adopt A Cat Month!!

Helping hundreds of felines find a forever home, thanks to the constant campaigning done by numerous cat lovers across the U.S. Since June is considered kitten season, a lot of cats end up homeless when their owners are unable to find them a home. Seeing this influx in cats brought to the shelters, many campaigns for cat adoption started in June. It's a great time to consider adding a kitty to your family.

Did you hear it is National Rescue Dog Day!

It's goal is to promote the adoption of dogs from shelters, rescue organizations, and pounds. There are an estimated three million dogs in shelters across the United States waiting to be adopted. That’s a lot of pups in need of homes!
Thank you to all the rescues and shelters out there.

HAPPY NATIONAL PUREBRED DOG DAY!

The day celebrates and honors the diversity and history of purebred dogs. Every breed in existence has it's purpose.
From hunting dogs to fierce protectors, the purpose is there. Little things they do, like herding breeds nipping the heels of children, show their instincts.
While there are still beagles that go off in search of rabbits for example, most purebred dogs today shift their main purpose to provide companionship and comfort to the family of humans they share their homes with.
However, be sure to research your breed of interest before deciding to get one. Things like exercise requirements, grooming, temperaments, and veterinary care needs differ. Be sure they are a good fit for your family. Choosing a responsible breeder or rescue should be the first step to having the perfect match and many years of joy with your purebred dog.

Here are Lisa's dogs sharing some photo time together. Three are purebred, and two are mixed breed. She has a love for the herding breeds.

Cats are a passion of mine because I feel they are so misunderstood. The number one cause of death in cats is euthanasia or surrender and then euthanasia because of behavior problems. Cats aren’t spiteful or mean. They may behave this way when they are stressed and their needs are not being met.
The photo below is of 2 geriatric cats, mom and daughter :) Cats that aren’t family members really prefer not to live with each other. Of course there are exceptions but always keep this in mind when thinking about adding a new cat to your mix.

Here are the minimum requirements that cats need to be happy and healthy.

Places to Climb
Each cat need to climb to the highest point in the room. Use cat trees, book cases or cat shelves.

Places to Hide
Each cat needs a cozy, small place to hide alone. Try cat caves, carboard boxes

A Way to Hunt
Cats need to hunt for multiple small meals day and night, not eat from a bowl. Use Doc & Phoebe's

Litter Box They Like
Very large, scooped twice a day, easy to get in and out of, safe from other cats, dogs, kids, loud noises. Uncovered with unscented dust free litter.

Interaction They Like
5 Min of active play twice a day, and respect their need to be alone

Things to Scratch
Tall, sturdy, so that the cat is able to get a full stretch

Respect for Territory
Cats can live in harmony when all of the above resources are met for EACH cat

Sensitive to smell
A cat's sense of smell is much more powerful than ours. Avoid scented litters, fragranced candles or air fresheners and heavily scented laundry products.

Help Dr. Wheeler, Jody, and Rachel welcome our new team member, Lisa.

Lisa has been in the veterinary field for over 30 years. She has done everything from kennels, receptionist and technician. Over recent years, she has helped manage her previous clinic where she worked for almost 25 years.
Lisa joined our team in January 2024.
She has special interest in animal behavior and training techniques. Lisa is an AKC approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and Farm Dog Judge. She spends her free time either competing or instructing in many AKC sports including Agility, Obedience, Rally, Scent Work and Barn Hunt.
She loves hiking with her dogs and enjoys the outdoors.
Lisa has 5 dogs, 2 cats, pet rats and several fish tanks that she shares her home with.
