Hope For Horses To improve the quality of life and end suffering for at-risk horses in Western North Carolina We work with animal control groups in several WNC counties.

Hope for Horses is a non-profit equine rescue located in Leicester, NC. Hope for Horses was established in 1998 to provide permanent placement alternatives for the equine population of Western North Carolina. The need became more apparent as more and more horses were left abandoned, neglected and abused. Hope for Horses was given life largely due to the services of Dr. Ann Stuart and Dr. Ted Wrigh

t of Appalachian Equine Veterinary Service, located in Weaverville, North Carolina. Their never-ending support provides the necessary medical care for horses donated to the program. The additional support of approximately sixty-five dedicated volunteers and numerous local contributors enables this dream to continue. Hope for Horses also offers solutions for equine owners in need of help through our HorseMatch Program. Many of these horses are in excellent condition, but in most cases due to their ages or certain limitations and their owners are just wanting good homes for them. While we believe there is a time and a place for euthanasia, we are steadfast in our belief that every horse deserves a safe and happy retirement whenever possible.

🌟 Buddy Update! 🌟
Just a month and a half ago, Buddy was abandoned in a pasture and arrived at our rescue in need of love and care. With the dedication of our amazing volunteers, support from our vets, and a careful refeed plan, we’re already seeing an incredible transformation!
Buddy is filling out beautifully, and his sweet personality is shining brighter every day. Watching him thrive has been such a gift.
This is exactly why we do what we do. ❤️🐴

"But if we stop riding horses, won’t they go extinct?"

I hear this a lot. And the truth is… horses are some of the most resilient beings on the planet.

They’ve been here longer than humans and have thrived on every continent except Antarctica. They are hardy survivors—able to adapt to deserts, mountains, plains, and tundra. The idea that their survival depends on us riding or training them is… well, a little human-centered.

What is true is that the way we value them determines whether we’ll make space for them in our world. And that’s why I’m so passionate about non-riding, and even non-training relationships—connections where a horse’s worth isn’t tied to their “usefulness” to humans.

This is an opportunity for us to mature beyond our human-centric ideas and actions—beyond the mindset that an animal’s right to exist hinges on what they can do for us.

We’re at a point in history where we can evolve past “working animals” and into interspecies friendships—where horses get to live as horses, and we still find deep purpose, joy, and learning in their presence.

We don’t have to saddle them to save them.
We just have to love them enough to give them a place to be free.

✨ It’s time to evolve.

❤️Buddy update!❤️
It sure is amazing to see what a few weeks of a proper diet, veterinary care and a whole lot of TLC will do for a neglected horse. He’s starting to show us his true spunky personality and most of all he’s appreciating the attention and love that our amazing volunteers give him!

💗Meet Wednesday!!!💗
Wednesday landed with us today, she was in a situation where it was urgent for her to find a soft place to land and some much needed medical attention. We plan to help her thrive so that she can find herself her very own forever home.
She is scheduled with our veterinarian’s at Appalachian Animal Hospital and will get the best care.
If you are able please consider donating to Wednesday’s veterinary care🙏🏽
