According to the study “Manual of creation and handling: Mura, fighting rooster”, Brazil received the first birds of combat breeds right at the beginning of its colonization. These animals were brought by the Portuguese and were originally from India, so they arrived here more than 500 years ago, spreading throughout the Brazilian territory precisely because they are rustic birds, extremely resistant and adaptable to the different climates of our country of continental dimensions.
Parallel to the domestic creation for eggs and meat, these birds were also used in combats for the entertainment of the nobles of the court and the people. Soon a competition-related selection was established. We then proceeded to select the strongest animals with the greatest genetic potential for transmission. Thus, as the people themselves began the creation of a unique species, resulting, therefore, from the mixture of several combatant races, such as the Indian aseel, the Japanese shamo, the English combatant and the Asian bankiva. From the crossing of all these breeds that were brought and imported by breeders, a genuinely national bird was born, which became known as the “Mura breed”, the true national combat rooster.
