Please be familiar with the emergency hours of our local emergency clinic, VVC. Check with your full-service veterinarian to see if they offer emergency appointments/care. Otherwise, familiarize yourself with the next-closest 24 hour clinic in case your pet needs help during an emergency! If your pet experiences an emergency, give the ER clinic a call so they know to prepare for your arrival. Our practice does not provide emergency services for dogs and cats.

⭐ Did you know ⭐...Just like baby horses, newborn donkeys are born with an immature immune system, and have limited ability to fight off infections.They must absorb immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, from their mom's colostrum within 24 hours after birth in a process known as passive transfer of immunity.

The newborn's ability to absorb antibodies declines quickly after birth. They can have a failure of passive transfer if they fail to receive enough immunoglobulins, leaving them susceptible to disease and sepsis. In their newborn exam, we test the success of passive transfer with a blood test for IgG (immunoglobulin) levels.

Jackson and Ellie, pictured below with Dr. Malik, were two of 40 Coggins samples we shipped out TODAY! In addition to making an appointment and drawing the blood, we need to factor in time for paperwork processing, mailing, and testing at the actual lab. When planning your horses spring shots this year, lets make sure they are up to date on rabies! Not only is rabies is 100% fatal and transmissible to humans, but it also is very hard to diagnose with many different possible clinical presentations. The only definitive test available to us is post mortem microscopic examination of brain tissue.

Prevention is key! There are two recent positive cases on the East Coast (TN and NC):

Educating is a huge part of being a veterinarian. Dr. Emily had the opportunity to meet with some members of the Spotsylvania 4H Club last week where she spoke about what it's like to be a veterinarian and what the path looks like to become one. She then demonstrated how to do a basic physical exam on a horse and what things may be a reason to call your vet if you see them. Future horse people in the making!!
