Mango and Maverick the labs have got an amazing team behind them—we are working first on guests entering the home and then general cue distinction and sensitivity between both dogs separately. Mango is a gorgeous working line lab and additionally a pandemic puppy on the conflicted temperament scale, so she brings 200% of raw emotions to every encounter. Thankfully her little brother is a calmer, confident, and non working line lab, so they will start to really balance each other out once the training plan kicks off. So excited to work with these pups!

Disco the lagotto is honing his leash walking skills by learning how to stay with his person and not pull towards everything he wants to sniff. We implemented a sit to request system so that he has to move from his instinctive/impulse brain to his cortex/thinking brain in order to go where he wants! The very basis of Premack’s principle. He was a fast learner! 🐕

River the husky mix and Cooper the retriever have been working hard at managing reactivity to dogs while on leash! Training two dogs at a time is more work but can sometimes be very helpful if the dynamic is right—River only recently started reacting, so once Cooper was able to learn how to redirect successfully, River copied him! Such an amazing time working with these smart pups. 🐕✨

Merlin the border collie became sensitized to the sound of a smoke alarm in his apartment, and has now become more sensitive to all beeping type sounds. We are midway through a slow desensitization and counterconditioning process to help him learn to soothe and disregard beeping sounds. His owners are amazingly patient and dedicated to helping him recover confidence! This kind of training takes a lot of precision and gentleness, as well as an ability to read your dog’s stress signals effectively to manage training without flooding them. SO proud of this team! 🐕🖤

Casper the havapom is back in town and working on adjusting to a busier home life. More access to windows and a big yard by the street mean he’s learning how to regulate bigger stimuli effectively. He’s got the benefit of an amazing foundational relationship with his owners, and is headed for success! ✨

Piper the frenchie joins her sister Winnie the lab for training walks! She’s working on building good leash manners and how to rebound easily from stressors in the environment. She’s doing a great job! She’s also benefitting from Winnie having done a lot of training first, so she’s able to follow her big sister’s lead. 🐕🐕

Hank the boxer mix is learning how to regulate strong impulsive behavior with guests coming over! Sensitivity has pros and cons and he’s a great example of that; he is nervous about changes in his environment but also quick to reassess and relax when he is given the space and calm communication he is soothed by. Wonderful first session and looking forward to his progress! 🐕

Maisie the Australian cattle dog joins the regular walking crew to help burn extra energy! We are also working to help her react less at home with guests, and to accept strangers approaching her owner. She’s got a lot of smarts and big feelings and is already learning some new routines. 🐕

Jack, AKA Mr. Beans (for looking like a pile of baked beans when he slept as a puppy), has been making enormous strides towards a less reactive mindset. He went through crisis in his home during developmental stages, and as a result struggles with impulsive behavior. His brain became wired for stress and anxiety, instead of calm curiosity. As his owner creates peace and stability in her own life, it is beginning to translate along with the hard work she’s putting in to teach him to regulate his emotional reactions. I’m so proud of this team and being a part of the healing happening for both of them is a bright part of my week. Go team Beans! 🖤☀️

BunBun the bichon frise mini poodle mix is a friendly sweetheart who’s learning how to be potty trained and handle being separated briefly from his favorite person! Mill rescue puppies can struggle more than most, but thankfully he’s got a dedicated owner who’s ready to manage his schedule :) 🐕

Finn the mixed pup is environmentally sensitive, and alert barks to subtle changes he hears or sees. We are working to give him other jobs to perform at home, as well as teaching him how to greet guests calmly and to be more confident on walks with his humans. Go Finn! 🐕

Rome the Jindo came from the Korean meat markets, which means that his journey to companion life here looks much different than a local pup. As he adjusts to his new life and family, his owners are learning to watch all his signals and help him learn to self soothe, become curious, bond with people, and grow in confidence. He is still largely overwhelmed and afraid, so his path may be slow but each step towards “normal” dog behavior is a huge milestone. Huge thanks to Sugako with to letting us work with her on this case! 🖤🐕

Mario is such a sweetheart! He comes from rough beginnings, and so is cautious and alert to small changes in his environment. He struggles allowing people into his home or nearby on the walk. His family watches all his body language signals to help him when he’s afraid, and so they’re wonderfully prepared to begin desensitization and counterconditioning techniques—teaching him new behaviors that help manage the fear and boost his confidence to do new things. 🐕

Odin & Nova have an established pattern of hyping each other up and causing cascades of reactivity at the window and on leash. We will be working to teach impulse control to both and boosting Nova’s confidence as her source of reactivity is emotionally based. Odin will be learning how to control the gas pedal on his impulses! They’ve got a super supportive family ready to hit the ground running :) ✨

These are my favorite updates to get! 🎉 Andrew has been dedicated to Rye’s behavioral modification from day one, and with his permission I wanted to share the results. The road to reducing reactivity can be an exhausting one, with ups and downs, and the progress can seem incremental until one day you look back and realize how difficult it used to be. Rye & Andrew have entered the last phase—the maintenance phase—and even this can still continue to improve with time. Go team! 🐕🖤✨

Dezi the mini Aussie is working through adolescent reactivity to sharpen her impulse control. She’s got an amazing training foundation due to her owner’s diligence, so now we are going to fine tune her ability to dial up arousal and dial back down to baseline using games, managed triggers, and some new routines! Go team Dezi 🐕✨

Daisy the chihuahua cattle dog mix is making progress towards learning to regulate a very sensitive temperament. She is quickly reactive to changes in her outside environment, often dogs, sudden sounds, and some people and vehicles. We focus on the smallest of behavior skills for her initially—shaking off (assisted by neck scritches), grass sniffing (by tossing treats), and walking much slower to help her regulate her arousal levels. 🐕

Adelaide the lab mix is learning how to self soothe after environmental arousal. Many dogs can quickly learn how to redirect their attention from a trigger, but the next step of moderating their emotional temperature on their own is the crucial skill that has become our specialty. 🌡️🐾

Remy the toy poodle is full of sugar and spice! He’s going to be learning how to utilize impulse control during his teenage phase. Regulating big emotions is famously hard for adolescents, but Remy is a sharp pup! 🐕

Nigel & Anchovy have been working hard on leash reactivity towards strangers, dogs, and cars (and the occasional squirrel), and have come such a long way in a few months! These guys are now a joy to walk and have entered their maintenance era ✨

Ziggy the cockatoo has come so far with building his confidence outside and around novelties. A blend of behavioral medication and regular desensitization/counterconditioning weekly work has turned him into a much happier pup! Great job team 🐾

Louis the goldendoodle has begun his journey of calm walks with his owners! He is anxious about greetings and being out in the world sometimes, so we are boosting his confidence and structure with the Engage/Disengage protocol. We are also putting all greetings on hold until he feels more comfortable, and learns to look to his owners when he is unsure instead of scaring off the things he’s scared of. He is extremely brilliant and I’m looking forward to being a part of his progress! 🐕

Tino the Boston Terrier has been a part of our regular walking crew for nearly 6 years now. He’s getting older these days but still has all the s***k of his breed. Sometimes we opt for enrichment in the yard instead of getting our steps in on a walk—but no matter what we do, he’s full of enthusiasm for it. Good boy, Tino 🖤

Bailey the dachshund is working to boost his confidence when alone, reintegrate crate training, reduce reactivity on walks, and learning to have a safe place to chew his bones instead of growling when people join him on the couch. Success post! Sadie the husky has been working hard to build confidence away from her owner in the wild world. Can you tell how this dog is comfortable? Her ears are relaxed or perked forwards, her tail is curled in the relaxed state of her breed, her gait is balanced on all 4 feet, her face has no wrinkles of stress, her mouth is relaxed and open, and she’s able to step out of the environment to watch her handler. What a brave girl, Sadie! 🥰🐶

These guys have been regulars of our walking crew for many years now—Ellie & Olivia! We’ve worked on leash reactivity and focus for Ellie the catahoula mix (and she’s absolutely nailed it), while Olivia is just along for the sniffs and enrichment. They are total sweethearts! 🐶🖤🐶

Cultivating Skill, Trust, & Love

Our goal is to build organic training relationships between dogs and their owners. Understanding each other takes time, compassion, and skill. We proudly use modern, science-based, and humane methods that do not rely on force, rough handling, pain, or coercion. Our lead trainer, Melissa Hawkins CCS, is deeply committed to giving each client a comprehensive view into their individual dog’s needs and behavior, and making clear the steps towards behavior modification and training new skills. We firmly believe that each dog is unique, and that changing behavior is never a “try this one trick” solution. The mark of an exceptional dog trainer is a passion for continuing education, and chasing after the most current data in the field. We are a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) for access to webinars, research, and new discoveries. We understand that science changes, new data appears, and behavior isn’t static!

Cultivated Canines is also partnered with a network of certified dog professionals in the greater Seattle area, to assist our clients in finding a specialist when needed. We are passionate about finding the best information for each owner to cultivate an effective training relationship with their beloved dogs.
