It seems surreal that Chita Rivera has passed, only because she truly seemed ageless. Her spirit of positive energy, and encouragement to everyone with whom she came in contact was a major force, and I don’t know anyone who knew her who didn’t deeply adore and love her. What a remarkable, incredible life. Oh yes, and then there’s the dazzling talent…

Chita Rivera, a Tony Award-winning dancer, singer and actor, has died at the age of 91.

Rivera began her dynamic rise to Broadway fame in 1957 as part of the original production of "West Side Story." She was nominated for 10 Tony awards during her more than six-decade career, winning twice for her roles in “The Rink” and “The Kiss of the Spider Woman," while carving a pathway for other Latina artists.

She also performed in a string of hits like "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Chicago," and worked alongside many other Broadway stars including Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins and Jack Cole.

Despite a serious car accident in the 1980s that left her leg shattered, Rivera continued to perform on stage through 2015, when she starred in a production of "The Visit."

She was born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in 1933 in Washington, D.C., and honed her talents at the School of American Ballet in New York before taking the stage for the first time at the age of 17.

In 2009, Rivera was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. She accepted a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2018.

Her daughter said she passed away Tuesday after a short illness.
