A big shout-out of thanks goes to the supporters who donated Kong Wobblers for the shelter dogs! Blitz, in particular, enjoyed his lunchtime with a Wobbler. Mental stimulation plays a crucial role in keeping our Dobermans content and fulfilled while they wait for their forever homes. For dogs like Blitz, seeking outlets for their energy through activities like self-stimulation can prevent unwanted or destructive behaviors. 🐾🐾 Blitz loves his lunchtime with Wobbler fun! ❤️

Shotzie - Ready for Adoption
You looking for me? Here I am! I’m still here at DRU.
Shotzie is fast, funny, full of energy yet alert and cautious of new surroundings. No camping for this girl, that’s what got her in trouble and brought her to DRU.
Shotzie would prefer a large, fenced yard, a lowkey social life and a confident owner who will work with her to ease her into new surroundings.
No cats or young children
DNA test results: 57% GSD, 26% Doberman, 17% other – but when you’re at DRU you are 100% Doberman!!

Please Share to help Shotzie find the forever home that she deserves.
One Happy DRU Dog!! Russell prefers to be out of the cold for a his fun time!

Good Wednesday morning, Julia from DRU here with another Training Tip!
Today I’m sharing a little video of my personal DRU dog, Pizza (you may have known her as “Bailey” before I adopted her) to demonstrate real life recalls. One of the most challenging things to teach a dog is to come when called in the presence of distraction. And for each of these very ambitious critter-hunters, there is no better distraction than the woods. You’ll notice in the clip of Pizza that she is following my other two Dobes but then breaks off on her own. That in itself is not a big deal, but her body language is obvious: she is suddenly very interested in something on the north side of the hill. The moment I sense this change in her intent I call her. Not in a panicky way, not in a booming, drill-sergeant way, just in a cheerful, normal tone. As she returns I let her know she’s a good girl, and as she breaks away again I am able to “check” her with a quick “hey”. We may repeat this sequence a dozen or so times in an hour. It’s not the formal recall that I use in an emergency or when doing more structured training. It’s a workaday check-in command that every dog should have as a habit. Pizza didn’t get like this overnight. I’ve owned her for nearly eleven months and she was in our DRU U training program for months before that. Her real life recall started on simple walks on the DRU property and in the training room. Then we progressed to the big yard. Then to the woods behind the shelter. All of this was practiced on leash using some food rewards and lots of praise as well as correction if she made the choice to ignore the command. We did hundreds of reps over time and practiced everywhere. The reward for both of us is the freedom we have to explore together. But this isn’t just about teaching a command, it’s about building a relationship with your dog so that she trusts you, enjoys your company, and understands and respects the choices you make for her. Here’s how to train a reliabl

Ryder
DRU U Pupdate: New DRU U student Ryder learns about self control during a sit/stay with food refusal. Good job, Ryder!
Just a couple Dobermans stalking each other as the snow started to fall yesterday. Working with our trainer Terence Kirby on pairing up some new friends. These 2 hit it off just fine!
This 10 year young Doberman is having a ball in the snow at DRU. Sirius Black is having a seriously good time. This Snowberman is not available as he is already spoken for but the video was too cute not to share.
Popeye has left the building
Popeye came to DRU almost 1 year ago today, after wandering the streets of NY as a stray. He dealt with skin infections, lick granulomas, and anxiety issues but was very much a staff favorite and a notorious cuddle bug. A long time DRU adopter came in to meet a totally different dog, when in walked Popeye with all of his charisma and personality and it was love at 1st sight. We will all miss him here at DRU but couldn't be happier for him!
