Everything is better with a friend involved! Juno has been working alongside Bebop since June of this year, and they were finally able to have a successful pup cup date for his birthday last month. Training may take a while, but it can be so rewarding!

Mon-Wed thereafter, with flexibility to take on different or additional days
Start date flexible
No weekends or major holidays!

Duties
- Safely operate a 2021 Ford Transit Connect equipped with custom welded transport kennels and remote monitoring
- Do six 15-minute pick-up training sessions in Chapel Hill and Durham
- Rotate dogs through a field trip training session or two shorter sessions
- Do 15-minute drop-off training sessions

Qualifications
- CPDT-KA, KPA, or comparable qualification*
- Able to comfortably lift at least 50 lbs on a routine basis
- Reliable and confident with the animal care aspect of the job
- Confidence and decisiveness in handling animal care, vehicle, and any other unexpected situations to ensure personal and canine safety over the company's bottom line
- Strong knowledge base and skill set in reward-based dog training
- Kindness to clients and colleagues of all training methods
- Background and driving record checks

Perks and Quirks
- There is no lunch break, due to the animal care nature of this job!
- In lieu of a lunch break, an allowance is provided up to $15/day to spend on lunch with active vehicle monitoring (line of sight + phone app with active checks)
- One transport kennel (~30" or ~36") reserved for trainer's dog
- Continuing education covered on a case by case basis. PM to discuss specifics.

*Willing to consider a training assistant candidate with a strong motivation to pursue certification. PM to discuss pay.

The doggy school bus students were on fire today!! Bebop helped Audrey with some shopping for her first HRC retriever hunt test; Bear worked on name response, sit, down, Look at That upon seeing other dogs, and parkour; Murphy worked super hard on ignoring all the fake trees inside the store (he is certain that other dogs p*e on them); Sheldon .sheldon bought everyone snakkos; Dizzy conquered her fascination with the aquarium and bought her uncle some black licorice bites; and Jet took a break from his TA duties to enjoy some "me" time and FINALLY catch one of those fish!!!

Sweet Clementine is crushing her study abroad trip to the beach! She's been combining her Look At That protocol, 123 heeling technique, desensitization and counterconditioning programme, and social learning (AKA the spaniel support crew) to relax by leaps and bounds each day. Dogs are amazing ☺️🍊

It's a rare Wednesday that we are able to enjoy a play date after our field trip, but the puppies generously took the time out of their training sessions by two-sided heeling (one pup on each side) through Lowe's like they'd been doing it all their lives!! Anything to get outside in this weather!

Real world training is about simulating real world experiences, which is why our school bus students start and end each day with a personalised training session in their own homes or neighbourhoods. This morning, Abbey is eating breakfast on her cot while Audrey enjoys a cup of coffee.

The school bus dogs each worked on a different life skill at Cedar Falls Park, but therapeutic scent work was at the core of everyone's training plan today!

Cody and Sheldon did confidence-building scent work, Bear used it to build engagement in a challenging environment, and the spaniels used it to reinforce calm leash manners and handler focus in an environment that activates their prey drive.

So true! Training and living with a fearful dog is a unique challenge that many of our clients face on a daily basis. Whereas a confident dog learns how to operate on its environment to affect desirable consequences, a fearful dog must first be supported in feeling that each environment is safe before learning can occur. Every single one of our fearful dog students is doing a fantastic job of supporting their dogs through life. Rock on!

Played with different levels of stopping to the whistle at the beach! Dizzy is running towards the ocean, and Bebop towards a ChuckIt ball he's been sent to retrieve, and that is still rolling. The head collar is present to condition a positive emotional response to wearing something new without spending any extra time!

Five-month-old Beau is not in a down stay or heel position, nor is he even actively seeking treats at this moment. He's simply existing with a calm confidence created by purposeful breeding, positive exposure, and low-arousal reinforcement of desirable behaviours.

Not everyone wanted their photo taken today, but everyone expanded their sit capabilities! Cody played his sit-to-search game for building calm confidence in a challenging urban environment; Bear played "sit or you'll miss it" (when the trainer stops, you can earn a treat toss for sitting, but only if you catch her before she moves again!); Sheldon watched some very strange distractions happen at the end of his lead, including push-ups, jumping jacks, and some opera singing; Abbey practised targeting her placeboard in new environments; and Dizzy, who is becoming downright difficult to challenge, did a sit stay through several other dogs' sessions.

When was the last time you took your dog on a gas station field trip? Many dogs are unable to enjoy road trips with their families, even to pet friendly destinations, because they cannot relax enough at gas station stops to relieve themselves, eat, or drink. It takes Ciao Bella 45 minutes to make the best deep dish pizza in the state of North Carolina, so the pups took turns practising place and treat catching while licking their lips in eager anticipation of that delicious crust!

Let's talk about muzzles! What are your thoughts, questions, and concerns?

Aipa knows and tolerates all of the dogs we had her out with today. She is selective, so we rotated her with our client dogs because a muzzle is not a substitute for management. However, because we were running all 8 puppies and young dogs at a high arousal level, Aipa wore a muzzle, which is just a familiar article of clothing to her, much like a collar or harness. At no point did she "need" her muzzle on, which is exactly how these situations should be.

Dizzy is starting to combine months of passive puppy socialisation with a few sessions of skills training! Being as unobtrusive as possible will be critical to her future job but is a valuable life skill for any dog.

What's in a simple picture of a dog lounging comfortably under a chair in a "people" space?

✅ Calm confidence around a wide variety of people, other dogs, traffic and other social/environmental stimuli
✅ The ability to leave food that other people are eating...even when it falls to the ground in front of your nose!!
✅ The ability to settle for extended periods
✅ Value for a mat
✅ The "tuck" behaviour of curling up under a chair or other object on a verbal cue without luring

Dizzy, who is aptly named, is simply being offered canned food from a squeeze pouch every time I take a step. For this exercise, zero responsibility for behaviour is on her! At 7 months of age, most of her learning is about passive associations and muscle memory - when I take a step, I offer the food directly beside myself so that she naturally stops on the step behind me to eat it.
