Cowboy is watching over the horses from the ranch house back yard as the sun begins to set. That green is turf! The horses are searching for the bits of green grass that are starting to grow in the pastures. The horses move all over the ranch in the evening. This is a favorite spot once the leaves are on the trees and the pastures are as green as the turf!

Jewel has been adopted and moved not far from Blue Rose Ranch to become a companion to Boomer. Boomer's long-time friend is now in horse heaven and Boomer was very lonely. He was thrilled when this beautiful paint mare got off the trailer! After greeting Boomer, Jewel wandered to check out the new digs, and Boomer followed her everywhere. The two will be great buddies. Jewel loves roaming and grazing, and her new home has plenty of pasture for the horses to enjoy.

Lily has a wonderful adoptive home! Her new job will be helping Braelyn with 4-H competitions, going on trail rides, and being Braelyn's best friend. We will miss seeing this beautiful palomino at Blue Rose Ranch, but are very happy that Lily has a special young lady to dote on her and know that Lily will have a great life in her new home.

Load of hay arrived this week. The hay came in bundles of small grass bales - 21 small bales per bundle. 26 bundles were delivered. Bundles of hay can be moved by the tractor and are much more convenient than moving small bales individually by hand. The hay was stacked carefully to make the best use of space in the hay barn. This is quality teff hay and the horses love it!

The staff built horse cookie snowmen for the horses to enjoy. When the horses were let out of the corrals for their evening to roam the ranch, the horses first on the scene to find the snowmen demolished the creations in their quest for the cookies. Pretty cold eating that snow! 😊

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS!
Welcome Princess and Phoenix. The two have lived together for many months. Phoenix had been abandoned, and for a time was watched over by Princess's owner. Financial and life difficulties led to the surrender of the two to Blue Rose Ranch. The pair arrived yesterday, and this afternoon, with the other horses in corrals, they had an opportunity to start exploring Blue Rose Ranch. They visited other horses in the corrals, strolled in front of the ranch house, and ventured close to the creek area. Princess and Phoenix will now have ample hay and a safe place to call home. Our farrier will be trimming their hooves soon.

This coming Tuesday, December 5th, is Colorado Gives Day. All donations made to Blue Rose Ranch through the Colorado Gives website come directly to our organization without deducted fees on Colorado Gives Day. This is a convenient way to support the work we do to care for horses in need of rescue and sanctuary. Donations of all size are appreciated. We are amazed each year on how small donations add up to really make a difference.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
We received some snow and have very cold temperatures. Not all horses need blankets, if they can get out of the wind and have free access to hay. The older and thinner horses do need blankets. On very cold days we have blankets on 30-35 horses. Organization in the blanket room is important during the winter months. Blankets are stored alphabetically by horse names.

Last July, we experienced damage from a bad storm, including the destruction of a shelter in one of the corrals. It took months to replace after ordering, but the horses now have an additional shelter going into the winter months. The basic shelter was constructed by the company we ordered the building from. John then had much work to insure the shelter would be durable and safe. He added to the foundation chains held securely in the ground by concrete. Steel kickplates were added to line the shelter. The kickplates strengthen the building and prevent horses from kicking through the metal sides and being injured.

Another load of hay arrives. This is the 6th semi-load delivered to the ranch this summer and fall. The hay is stored for winter months. We will bring in another semi-load soon. Last year we were going through 30 of these large bales of hay every month! We have a lot of mouths to feed. Quality hay is very important to horse health.

Each summer, Blue Rose Ranch replenishes its stockpile of hay for the upcoming winter season. In July, our region experienced unprecedented storms. Some of our local hay producers had crops ruined by storms, and we had to bring in several semi-loads of grass hay from Montana. Because the hay traveled so far, the loads were wrapped in plastic tarps to protect the hay from rain and winds in route. The hay we purchased was expensive, but it is high quality and the horses love it.

Bear Creek is running! We received 1.5 inches of rain last night. Normally a dry creek, the rushing waters are clearing out tumbleweeds and downed limbs. Many of the horses were in the pasture on the far side of the creek when the rains came. Our staff hiked through a neighbor's property to check on the horses this morning, and all are fine. Pretty exciting event for the horses. Not to worry about them being trapped away from the corrals. They have plenty of food and water!!! And, they can actually swim across - which Russet did when he realized his best friends were on the opposite side!

Have you ever wondered, with all the areas of green pasture, why do the horses sometimes stand in areas of dirt? The flies after the rain are really a nuisance, especially when it is hot. The horses will group together in areas where they can roll in the dirt or mud, and where their tails help each other keep the flies away. We use fly spray to help the horses, but even the more expensive brands wear off.

Welcome Magic and Journey.
These two friends were residents of a horse rescue whose owner passed away recently. Magic and Journey are both 31 years old and with their health issues, are not horses suitable for adoption. We are happy to bring them into the sanctuary program at Blue Rose Ranch. Here, they will stay together and enjoy safe pastures and love. These are things their previous owner hoped to provide for them.
And yes, in the one photo, Magic is playing with a tumbleweed!
