After visiting our kennels with her mom last year, Nora was so inspired that for her birthday she asked the guests attending her party to donate supplies to Nittany Greyhounds instead of giving her gifts. She and her mom presented these much-needed items to us last week. Happy 9th birthday and thank you, Nora!

Hey, friends, this is NOT just normal summer heat coming at us this week. Please be mindful of your greyhound's paws (and any other pets!), keep walks & runs brief, provide shade if your hound is outside, and be sure s/he has access to fresh, cool water.

DO NOT forget about your furry friends with the upcoming heat! DId you know that concrete and asphalt surfaces are significantly hotter than the air temperature? With air temperatures exceeding 90 degrees next week, the surfaces you walk your pets on will be as much as 40-60 degrees hotter. These hot surfaces may damage your pet's skin. You can test the pavement temperature by holding your hand on it for 7 seconds. If it too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your pets.

Ticks carry several diseases, of which Lyme is the most common. Dogs can pick up ticks even with a walk around the block if they brush grass in the berm between the sidewalk and the street. Don't assume your greyhound doesn't come into contact with ticks! (because we all know what ASSuming does, right? 😜) Make sure your hound has monthly protection year-round Ticks can even survive the deep freeze of winter months.

We haven't mentioned corns in a while, but if your greyhound appears to be limping or you can see corns, please don't let your dog live in pain. Because of their unique anatomy, greyhounds (and some other sighthounds) seem to be more at risk for corns than many other dog breeds. Our vet, Dr. Haus at Centre Animal Hospital, conducts a procedure called a flexor tenotomy, a newer, minimally invasive technique for corn management, in which a portion of tendon is removed. This alters the way the toe contacts the ground, relieving the mechanical stress of weight-bearing that causes the corn. Talk to your vet today if you think your hound has corns.

We're thankful it has not been super hot yet, but summer's coming, and so will hot temps. Know these warning signs of heatstroke in dogs! They include: heavy panting and difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, lethargy, unusually poor coordination, vomiting, and collapse. Protect your dog from heatstroke by providing shade and plenty of water, monitoring exercise carefully on hot days, and most of all, be alert to changes in your dog's attitude and DON'T WAIT to rush your dog to a veterinary emergency hospital if you suspect heatstroke. Heatstroke can be fatal, and it's an ugly, painful way for a dog to die.

Anton, who has been with us since early November, has this interesting scar on his hip. Are we the only ones who see the Pl***oy Bunny?! Anton has been living the dream in a foster home for several months, but he'd be so happy to be your one and only for the rest of his life! He'd prefer a quiet home with no competition from other pets or children. Anton is well behaved and loves attention. You can see more pictures of him on our website here: https://nittanygreys.org/dogs-page-1

As summer approaches and temps rise, please, PLEASE never take a chance with your greyhound (or any pet!). 75 degrees may not feel hot to you, but to a dog locked in a car, even with windows cracked, it can get dangerously hot so, so fast.

Lyme disease can really affect your hound’s quality of life. Read this blog for more info.

Just like us, our pups can contract Lyme disease from ticks, specifically the deer tick, which carry the bacteria that causes this disease. Dogs anywhere in the country can come into contact with ticks, but it's more likely if you live in wooded areas where they are prevalent, and if your pup spends a lot of time outdoors. Regular inspections of your dog after outdoor excursions can help catch ticks before things get nasty. 🚫🤢 If you do find one on your pup, grab some tweezers, gloves, tissues, and rubbing alcohol.

Need more info on ticks? Our in-depth blog article will help you understand what Lyme disease is and the common symptoms. It's best to talk to your veterinarian about the best tick prevention and removal, as well as how to treat Lyme Disease. https://www.pumpkin.care/blog/lyme-disease-in-dogs/

Thank you, friends, for helping us honor the memory of our founder, Elaine Oleksa, during Centre Gives. 118 of us donated to raise $13,056 (before the match monies are added), we won a Power Hour prize of $500, a $100 Magic Minute prize, a $100 Wheel of Philanthropy prize, AND $250 for having the most engaging community activity at Centre Gives Fest! (I mean, who ISN'T engaged by greyhounds, right???).

Thank you all again, for keeping the flame of Elaine's passion for rehoming racing greyhounds alive with Elaine's North Star Fund.

We also wish to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Centre Foundation for creating this amazing opportunity for local nonprofits and for their hard work each year to make it an outstanding event.

Another GROUP ROO Power Hour is coming up in 60 minutes! You can check our progress in the Top Ten $500 competition by visiting https://centregives.org/prizes. If you or anyone you know is making a second donation tonight, remember to hold it until our GROUP ROO Power Hour at 7pm. Then check later tonight to see how we stack up!

Our sweet Luke, our “Lukie” is a grey who has benefitted from our care. Our sweet Luke, our “Lukie” is a grey who has benefitted from our care. You've seen him featured in some of our holiday posts as the Most Patient Model Ever. Luke suffers from a seizure disorder, but continues to live a happy life well into his senior years.
Thanks to the vision of Nittany Greyhounds' founder, Elaine Oleksa, we continue to be able to help dogs like Like. Donations this year will help establish “Elaine’s North Star Fund” in her memory with funds specifically set aside for the disadvantaged greyhounds we never turn away. We invite you to stand with us to fully fund Elaine's legacy.
Our second GROUP ROO Power Hour is coming up from 7-8pm. We'd love to have your help to win the $500 prize for having the most unique donors!
