Please don’t dump your domesticate pet ducks at a local lake, or pond!
Update On The Ducks Needing A Home - I went out to the lake last Friday (05.16.2025) I found the two Peking’s laying down side on side. After assessing the situation and walking by them several times. I approached them and started feeding them, low and behold, I was able to catch them both at the same time. While getting them situated in the carrier another peking came up. It was very apparent she wanted to come with. Peking ducks are domestic, so she was another dumped duck. I could not leave her. I fed and caught her. As I was getting ready to leave, I saw a big muscovy in the parking lot, on top of a female, that was very torn up. So I grabbed her and got him off her and took her with me. The male ducks are highly aggressive with mating, ripping up the females. Many times it ends up killing the girls. So often, with so many male ducks on her, they end up drowning in the water, or permanent damage to where they can no longer stand.
I got them home and bathed them and treated them for mites. Yes, they had mites which creeps me out 😩 Then saw on the two I went to catch, very bad bumblefoot. The large foot pad was covered, with many bumbles on the toes. The two others, also have bumblefoot, but not as bad, but still very bad. I had a lady that was going to take them and treat them, but after me chasing her, with a lot of running around. She quit responding. So great, now I had 4 ducks, that needed major treatment and no home for them! After talking with my friend, she offered, to be their backup home, if no placement is found.
Feeling overwhelmed with four ducks in bad condition. (Bumblefoot must be treated, or their body will eventually go sepsis.) I ended up taking them to the vet. We were able to surgically removed the bumblefoot for one and a half ducks. So much blood and so many stitches. We stopped before taking off the huge bumble. The duck was stressed, and we were very tired. They got their antibiotic shot, then got loaded up to head home. When home they were situated in their sterile crate.
I’ve started the bumblefoot treatment for the two ducks that didn’t get vet treatment. (This post is lengthy so I will post later on that.) I am hoping to get them back to the vet this week to speed up the process, and get them to their new homes asap. I’m figuring it will take two more visits. I’m hoping to give the vet a $300 donation. (A normal vet would charge around $300 for one duck’s treatment of bumblefoot.)
I am still looking for a home for these peking ducks. I had two people come forward to take the ducks off my last post, both disappeared after I asked for pictures of their duck area. Seriously, too much time, loving care, and money has gone into these ducks and I need to ensure that they will be well taken care of after all of this. So if you can give them a good home, with a predator proof environment. Please send me a picture of your duck area.
Any donations towards vet treatment, home treatment; meds, medical supplies and housing supplies would be greatly appreciated.
