Bark Up A Tree Woodworks Hillsboro, OR From Liturgical Furniture to Wood Game Boards and Everything in Between. I started woodworking in High school. At that time, I didn’t consider it art.

Artist Bio
I am a husband, a father of 2 sons, and the owner of the shop dog Smoke (AKA the mascot). My youngest child is special needs and he is the reason that I became a full-time artist/craftsman. He was the push that I received to make the leap from working for someone else to working for myself. I needed to be home to take care of him when he was younger, so I could work from home and take h

im to all of his appointments. I just loved to cut, carve, and hack up wood to come up with something useful. I didn’t know about all the different colors, grain, or textures that wood has. I educated myself on techniques, learned by trial and error, and became comfortable in my abilities. I learned how wood is always alive, moves with humidity, and how to compensate for that movement. I am a perfectionist, if a project or a part is not up to my high standards it will find itself in the burn pile.

Finally getting some more Dice Towers started. Today I have the sides to the tower cut. I still have to put the baffle dados into the sides and make the top so the dice can drop through.

I've been super busy making things and my sharing has been almost nonexistent lately. Here I'm applying finish to some Washington County plaques that go to local awards company. These will be awards for the county sheriff's office. I'm delivering them today!

I'm calling these boxes "Continuum Boxes" because no two are alike. The combinations are infinite! I built them in 3", 4", and 5" sized cubes. The inside of the lid is lined with Spanish Cedar for a great spicy smell.

I will have these at the Sandy Mountain Festival this weekend. Come check them out there first. I will try to photograph and list the remaining boxes next week.

Here I'm gluing strips together to make panels. No two panels are alike with different species, different widths, and different combinations. Truly random panels.

I'm taking strips of wood and grouping them together. These strips will be glued together to make a panel. Later the panel will be made into a box. At least that's the plan!

The beginnings of something different for me. I've had these strips saved for a long time. I've been looking at them stacked up in a barrel. It's about time I came up with a way to use them. Follow along as build something with these strips of wood. The possibilities are endless!

It's Cool Tool Friday again. This week we have a simple, special little tool. This is a mandrel for turning bottle stoppers.

Attach the mandrel to the lathe. I use a collet chuck to do this.

Simply drill and tap the bottle stopper blank, screw the blank onto the mandrel and turn the blank into a bottle stopper. This mandrel makes holding the blank accurately and consistent very simple. I also use it to finish the bottle stoppers too.

It's Cool Tool Friday!!! Today's cool tool is the electric branding iron that I use to mark my products. I brand the bottom of all the boxes I make. I also brand the bottoms of all the Pegs & Jokers boards. It may not seem like much of a tool but it used on almost every item that comes out of my shop. I also hand sign and date everything too.

It's Cool Tool Friday!!! This weeks tool is the Shop Fox 40" x 20" Downdraft Table. This tool really keeps the dust down in the shop.

I connect the table to the dust collector and the dust goes down through the slots in the table and into the collector. I lay a router pad with holes in it on top of the table to protect what I'm sanding. When I 'm not using I store it by hanging the table from the ceiling.

In this short video I'm cutting a couple Aspen Pegs & Jokers boards. These particular boards are cut from 3 5/8" strips on the bandsaw. I generally cut the lumber into 2 1/2" or 3 5/8" strips to get the most yield out of a lumber board.
