The Project Canine pack is sending up a sad howl to accompany Lucy Pugalier across the rainbow bridge. 🌈 Lucy passed away yesterday at 16 years old. She and her handler Leslye were one of our longest serving teams ever and were with us for 10 years. They were an extraordinary team and Lucy was the kind of therapy dog who could visit in any environment with any population and spread joy and compassion. She came to a wide variety of events and had a regular gig visiting in an eldercare in Shoreline before COVID. She also spent many years visiting at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska. She also participated in various programs over the years including Bow Wows and Books. There really wasn't anything she couldn't do. She and Leslye shared kindness, compassion, and connection with sooooo very many people and they created a lasting legacy of love. We are so lucky they chose our community and now they are one of our "forever teams." Good-bye sweet Lucy. You will be forever missed. Please hold Leslye in your thoughts and hearts as she navigates this challenging time. 💜

Our annual reminder about this. It's tragic how many puppies and animals are rehomed in the months after Christmas because people weren't really prepared for what raising a dog entails. If you really want to add a dog to your family, please, please, please take the time to really research the breed you want or the rescue organization that you are adopting from. Both paths can be fraught with issues and it's important that you truly understand the realities, costs, and choices. If you are getting a puppy, young dog, or rescue you will likely need professional dog training. There is also veterinary care, pet insurance, food, gear, toys, chews and other costs. Puppies are cute, but they quickly become adolescent dogs. This is a very difficult stage and it's important that you understand what it means before agreeing to raise a dog. Please pass this on to anyone you know planning to get a dog. If we bring them into our family we owe them a good life.

A reminder about some of the foods that are safe and not safe to feed your canine family members on Thanksgiving. This isn't an exhaustive list. It's always best to check with a vet or a reliable online resource before feeding your dog anything they don't normally eat. There are many, many spices, seasonings, nuts, and more that are typically part of Thanksgiving meals that are very dangerous for dogs.

Important food information to remember so your pet is safe during Thanksgiving. This is not an exhaustive list, but it covers many common foods. It's always a good idea to double-check before feeding your dog holiday food. There are many spices, seasonings, nuts, and more that are very harmful for your canine family members.

Project Canine Certifies Therapy Dogs

Project Canine is a therapy dog education, certification and outreach program. We have certified teams from northern Washington state to southern Oregon. Our certified teams go out into the community and share compassion, kindness and connection with people in a variety of settings including hospitals, eldercare facilities, at-risk youth facilities and so much more. We have a 4-step program for certifying our teams. If you are interested in certifying with your dog please go to our website and www.projectcanine.org
