One of Kristoff’s biggest issues before he came was stay! He can be a bit insecure, and likes to stay close to his people for safety, along with that, noises were so overwhelming that just strangers walking behind him would cause him to forget what was asked of him two seconds prior.

He is a very smart pup though! And loyal to people he trusts. We worked on building his confidence as well as his understanding of what stay actually meant, and now he’s rocking it!

This is at a public park, there was a playground and skate park next to us, people walking dogs by, and a couple off-leash dogs playing in the field behind us. I’m proud of this boy for being able to acknowledge the noises around him, and still commit to his stay! Good boy!!

Eevee LOVES people and dogs, so she’s been struggling a bit with her recalls. Treats mean nothing to her when in the presence of a new potential playmate.

Luckily, treats aren’t the only way we can reward our dogs for good behavior! After all, the main reason Eevee is so distracted by people and dogs is because they mean FUN. So, we just have to use fun as a reward!

A random stick plucked off the ground serves as a perfect prize for coming away from a lady and her pup.

Remember, if we want play with us to be as valuable as play with someone else, we have to be convincing! Your dog will know if your heart isn’t in it. Instead of trying to convince your dog playing with you is fun, convince yourself and just enjoy the game!

Penny is still available! (What the heck? This girl is too sweet to not have been scooped up by now!)

Please share with anyone you know who might need some pittie love in their life!

Penny would be a lot of fun for someone who wants a goofy dog that they can teach tricks and take for runs.

She can be shy with new people, but once she knows you is affectionate and eager to please.

Penny plays well with friendly males, but has little patience for other females or any animal around her food. I am fostering her as her owners were worried they would have to put her down after she got in a fight with their other female dog.

She is crate-trained, house-broken, and has some basic obedience training. Not reactive on walks. Does not resource guard with people. Does not chew or dig. Rarely jumps and does not steal food. Loved the grandkids in her previous home.

She has the typical enthusiastic bully breed personality, so while she has been doing well on her leash manners and is pretty polite inside, she would be best with someone who is physically capable of handling a strong dog and knows that random zoomies are a part of living with a 14 month old dog.

Please message me at (971) 267-9624 if you or anyone you know are interested in Penny!

It’s hard not to feel safe when you have this guy at your side!

Jake went home this morning and I’m going to miss him (I already do!). He’ll have some challenges to work through now that he’s back in his old environment where he is quite used to practicing his old (unwanted) habits. However, now that his owners have the tools and the skills to encourage the good habits he’s learned and discourage bad ones, we are looking forward to long term success.

Apologies for the radio silence - we have been revamping our website to streamline the training sign-up process, as well as adding some exciting automations to our mailing list so we can stay in touch better after pups go home!

Of course, we’ve also been working dogs and performing a few Christmas miracles like the one in this video - a peaceful (and quiet!) Cane Corso resting in his crate while someone is in the other room. No more straw either - although he does require a big fluffy bed (fair enough). Good job Jake!!

When working with a dog that is bigger than you, has seperation anxiety, and uses his teeth in response to conflict - you have to get creative.

So here I am, drinking tea on a lovely Saturday morning, throwing steak into a kennel to show Jake that his crate is a pretty good place to hang out, and that going into it doesn’t mean I am immediately going to shut the door and leave.

The straw is a technique I have seen recommended highly for crate anxiety. Fill the crate up with straw, sprinkle treats in, and voila the dog has equal parts puzzle toy and cozy nesting spot. This is my first time trying this method and also my first full night of sleep since Jake arrived, so I would say it is going pretty well.

Note: It is generally recommended to do this with a plastic kennel to avoid the mess, but none of my plastic kennels are big enough for Jake. At least straw tracked around the house is sort of in the holiday spirit, right? 🎄

Meet Jake! This handsome boy takes his role as house Cane Corso very seriously - guarding his home and family against any intruders or potential threats. Unfortunately, he takes this task a bit too far in that he thinks everyone and everything is a potential intruder or threat (even when his owners tell him otherwise).

He is staying with us all of December to learn that he can perform his role as watchdog by observing quietly from his bed, and that aggression (or the threat of it) doesn’t need to be his first response to a minor conflict.

It can be easy to overlook engagement practice because it is, well, really fun! We tend to think homework shouldn’t be fun, but one of the best ways to have a dog who enjoys working with you is to show them that you are every bit as worthwhile to pay attention to as that dog, person, squirrel, etc.

Recently I have been including more “play practice” sessions in homework plans, it is easier to commit to working with your dog if you enjoy them and they enjoy you!

Always start with ENGAGEMENT

Diesel looks a little intense? What you’re seeing is off the charts ENGAGEMENT.

A good friend & mentor referred Diesel’s owners to me (he’s not training at present) for manners & loose leash training, but gave them some tips to get started with Engagement before our session.

Diesel is possibly the most Engaged dog I’ve ever done a first session with.

This makes my job SOOOOO easy, because if you have Engagement, you’re already set up for success.

But what is Engagement exactly? Eye-contact? Kind of, but it’s more about the mindset that causes the eye contact.

Engagement means a dog knows you have the things they like and they’re ready to work for them.

An engaged dog WANTS to be with you.

If you can get this kind of engagement EVEN around high level distractions like dogs or other things of interest in the environment, then all you need is a clear communication system & you could teach a dog just about anything.

Engagement is the most important pillar of dog training. Always start there 🖤

A little bit of rain, a little bit of sun. Perfect day to practice laying down on wet grass (a real challenge for a lot of dogs).

Daisy says, “I’ll down-stay in a puddle of lava if I get the ball afterward.”

Winston says, “Either my elbows get wet or my knees do, but there is no way I am letting them both get wet at the same time!”

Diva says, “Down means lay down inside on carpet, how the heck am I supposed to down outside on grass?”

Well said!

It takes time (sometimes a long time) for better habits to replace old ones. Leaving the leash on ensures you can easily direct away from bad habits and guide toward good ones.

Once these habits are established and the dog does them without you needing to pick up the leash - then the leash can come off!

A very common question I get from owners when a dog is here for Board & Train: “well what happens when…”

Nothing. Nothing happens when… because I don’t set the dog up to fail like that.

I train and prepare a dog. Baby steps. LEASH ON. We trainers, we use a leash a lot, and for a very long time, for a reason.

A leash is a communication tool, not simply a restraint tool.

I am not going to see what your dog does without a leash until they know what to do WITH a leash.

I am not going to see what your dog does when someone knocks until I see that they know how to act when someone doesn’t and just walks in.

I am not going to see your dog’s reaction to situation B, until I know they can respond appropriately to situation A.

When trainers do things in small steps and with leashes on, it’s because we are TEACHING. We aren’t running around, throwing dogs into situations that could be scary or stressful, hoping for the best and crossing our fingers which are subsequently sitting on an ecollar button.

How would you feel if you went to school, were told to do a geometry problem when all you know is basic math, then socked in the face when you get it wrong?

The LEASH is the ultimate teaching tool. It’s how we teach the geometry to the student who only knows basic math. It’s how we communicate.

If your dog can’t do it ON a leash, your dog can’t do it OFF a leash.

Put the leash on the dog.

Eevee (little black dog) has been nervous of new dogs and unwilling to play after leaving her littermates.

Any attempt from Garner to interact led to her hiding between my legs and snarling - even after she had gotten comfortable walking with him and moving around with him off-leash.

My usual method to entice nervous dogs to play is to encourage nervous dog to get into a playful mood with me, then instigate a game of chase by having both dogs run after me. This was not working with Eeve as she became too focused on me, and even more irritated by Garner getting into our space. So, I tried a different tactic…

Get Garner to run and play while removing myself from the equation. In a matter of seconds Eevee realized that this previously scary, unknown creature could actually be an entertaining playmate far better at playing chase than I ever could.

Note: Do not try this with toy possessive dogs or dogs with a history of dog aggression. I felt safe doing this as both dogs are puppies, but instigating an older dog to chase may result in a more aggressive prey-driven response.

Lovely miss Dhara is here for help with some reactivity, she is everything a Shepherd should be - smart, eager to learn, and loves her people! This also means she can get over-excited pretty easily, so we are working on being calm on walks and in the house, and making better choices when we see dogs.

Can you see the side-eye? Mayhem doesn’t like it when other dogs get attention, so he is practicing laying in his bed while another dog gets pets.

Don’t worry, he got his fair share of treats and attention for a job well (albeit begrudgingly) done.
