Today (August 8) is International Cat Day!

We'd love to see a photo of your best feline friend. Share in the comments below.

This day also offers us a great opportunity to explain an important policy our business has:

Occasionally, potential clients ask to hire us to "just check in on their cat every couple of days" while they are gone.

At Happy Paws Upstate, we require at least once per day visits for cats.

Anything can happen when pets are left alone—and cats are no exception. From potentially lethal ailments like urinary blockages to potential home damages from a cat accidentally loosening a water hose behind a washing machine, not having your pet sitter check on your cat daily while you're away can have costly—or tragic—consequences. Plus, your cat needs daily attention and interaction as well!

March is pet poison prevention month. Here are some house hold items you might not know about to keep from your pets.

March is pet poison prevention month. Here are some house hold items you might not know about to keep from your pets.

Things you need to know are poisonous to pets:

1) You might be tempted to give your pet Tylenol or Advil when they're not feeling well- DON'T DO IT! Contact your vet for a pet-friendly medication instead.

2) Watch out for xylitol- it's commonly found in breath mints and gum, but can be used as a sweeter in tons of products (even peanut butter!). Always read ingredient lists to double check. Because when dogs eat something containing xylitol, the xylitol is more quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, and may result in a potent release of insulin from the pancreas. This can cause hypoglycemia as soon as 60 minutes.

3) Take extra care when using fragrances in your home like essential oils, which may be harmful. Make sure what you're using to freshen the air isn't inadvertently harming your animals.

4) Sago palms are just one of many plants that pose a risk to pets. If there is any chance your pet will mess with your plants, check to ensure you only have non-toxic plants.

5) Chives, really? Yup, chives (onions, garlic, leeks too) are in the Allium family. These are all toxic to both dogs and cats if they eat enough at once, or ingest them in the right amount over a long period of time.

Today is World Hippo Day! Hippos are so fun to watch whenever you go to the zoo. With their big mouths and little ears.
Did you know the name “hippopotamus” comes from a Greek word meaning “water horse” or “river horse.” But hippos are not related to horses at all—in fact, their closest living relatives may be pigs or whales and dolphins!
There is also 2 different kinds of hippopotamus: the river, the one most are familiar with, hippo and the much smaller pygmy hippo.

For more information about Hippos on this World Hippo Day check out San Diego Zoo's website. Let us know other facts that you find out in the comments
https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/hippo

And no, unfortunately at this time Happy Paws DOES NOT care for hippos. BUT we do care for pigs and horses!

Do you get stuck trying new treats for your dog? Well today you're in luck. Here is one recipe we found that you can make at home and let the dog lick the spoon. You can also check out their website for me recipes.

Blueberry Biscuits Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and oat flour.
3. In a separate small bowl, mash the blueberries. If you’re using frozen blueberries, allow them to thaw before mashing. You want a somewhat smooth consistency with small blueberry pieces.
4. Add the mashed blueberries, unsweetened applesauce, water, egg, and honey to the dry ingredients. Mix well to form a dough. You may need to adjust the amount of water slightly if the dough is too dry or too sticky.
5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
6. Use dog-themed cookie cutters or any shape you prefer to cut out the biscuits. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits turn golden brown and crisp.
8. Allow the biscuits to cool completely on a wire rack.
If you’d like, you can ice the biscuits with a small amount of plain Greek yogurt (1/4 cup) for added appeal. Make sure to let the icing set before serving.
Store the blueberry dog biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can be kept for up to two weeks.

If you decide to get a Rabbit this month, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Rabbits LOVE Greens; spinach, romaine lettuce, Timothy hay, cabbage, all these are great for your rabbit. Make sure that your rabbit is getting the needed nutrients to keep healthy.
Nail trims; yes rabbits need their nails trim on a routine basis. Just like with cats and dogs the nails can overgrow and start growing into the pads of their feet.
Litter Box; RABBITS CAN BE TRAINED TO USE THE LITTER BOX! YAY!
Provide enrichment; just like your dog and cat rabbits like to have toys as well to play with. This helps with boredom and keeps their brain active.
Establish a vet; having a vet for routine care can help in case of any emergency that may arise.
Grooming your rabbit will not only help with shedding out the dead hair in the undercoat but can help build your bond with your rabbit.

Happy Paws Upstate cares for rabbits and we LOVE them! They are so fun to watch jump around and investigate everything that is going on.

Visit the website below for other tips on caring for your rabbit.

February is Pet Dental Health Month, And I figured it would be helpful for y'all to have some tips to help keep those wonder mouth's breaths fresh and clean.

1. Brush the pet's teeth with toothpaste specifically for that species (dog or cat). Some dogs truly enjoy having their teeth brushed because canine toothpaste is usually flavored to suit a dog’s taste buds. Chicken, beef, and peanut butter are the most popular flavors.
2. Add Dental powder to the top of your pet's food. VetriScience Perio Support Powder Dental Supplement for Cats & Dogs is one that vets recommend.
3. Add a dental cleaning additive to your pet's water.
4. Prescription Dental food can also help keep mouths clean & prevent periodontal disease. You can ask your vet about these products.
5. Give your dog dental treats such as Oravet chews which help to break down the bacteria and tarter that forms in your pet's mouth.
6. Regular dental cleaning from your vet is just like when you go in for a cleaning. It helps to reduce disease and the vet is able to find things before they get bad.

For more information and answers to other questions check out these sites. I used the petmd one for information today.
