“When I purchased a six month old filly at my age of 63, people thought I was a bit crazy. But I felt that I could provide a really good start to her life even though I had never trained a horse so young. Jim Masterson was the equine bodywork therapist for the 2006 through 2014 WEG and World Endurance Championships, and for thousands of equine athletes competing on the AA level and in FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Equestrian Games competitions. He teaches a unique method of equine bodywork to horse owners and therapists in which the practitioner learns to read and use the responses of the horse to touch to release tension in key junctions of the body that most affect performance. The Masterson Method is an effective method of bodywork that anyone can learn to use to improve performance, and open new levels of communication and trust with the horse. He is the author of the book and video 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱, and the video 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲.

In this live podcast episode, I'm going to be talking with Karen Rohlf about developing the happy athlete. So much of dressage is about developing the horse as an athlete - and even Article 401 of the FEI dressage rule book states that "the Object Of Dressage is the development of the horse into a happy athlete." But what does that even mean? And why do we see so much of the "unhappy athletes" in competition?

Karen became one of the youngest riders in the US to train her own horse to FEI. She later attended a natural horsemanship clinic and saw great results applying these concepts with her dressage horses. The next years were spent immersing in natural horsemanship. She then took her knowledge and skills and created her unique system she calls Dressage Naturally so she could share it with others. She believes in getting to the heart of our mental, emotional, and physical partnership with our horses by bringing together the best of the worlds of dressage and partnership-based training.
