SO SORRY TO SAY THAT THIS SYMPOSIUM HAS BEEN CANCELED/POSTPONED. HOPING TO RESCHEDULE TO ANOTHER DATE

“Understanding the theory of riding is an essential basic, so you can choose the right methods during practice. A rider will need to continue to search for the best methods throughout their whole riding career because of the dimension and complexity of this subject. Therefore, we will never reach the point where we can say: Now I know everything.”

As a trainer, one of our most important jobs is to help increase our horse's (or student's) confidence as learners.

We all know that the foundation education our horse has is important. What do you consider to be key elements in a horse's foundation?

A poor teacher repeats the same thing; and escalates volume and pressure when it is not understood.

A great teacher changes the language, presents in another way, or breaks it down in a way the student or horse can understand.

When a student doesn’t understand, it is the responsibility of the teacher to clarify in a way the student can learn.

Mindful Monday (…on Wednesday)

When a horse presents an undesirable behavior, it’s not a reflection upon the horse. It just means that you don’t have something better to offer to them in that moment.

The horse is not a mirror of you, just a really good reason to take a look in one.

This was a fun chat with my friend Daniel Dauphin for his "Adult Onset Horsemanship" Podcast. Give it a listen, and be sure to follow Dauphin Horsemanship for more!

Ep. 37 of the Adult Onset Horsemanship Podcast is out. We got a prime guest for a prime number. Patrick King grew up riding and wound up working for Ray Hunt in his early 20's. Mark Russel turned him to the dark side and now he's a much sought Classical Dressage Trainer and Clinician. I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick at last year's Best Horse Practices Summit and we hit it off immediately. I'll tell you right off that this one goes deep and gets technical, but I also think we manage to shine some light into some dark corners and will enlighten many. Give this one a listen for sure.

Groundwork VS In-Hand Work

FREE LIVE LECTURE/DISCUSSION - July 30 at 7pm (eastern)

Groundwork is essential for beginning any horse's education - it's absolutely essential, and it's important at every age for every discipline. In-Hand Work is like the "college level of groundwork"... but what are the differences, really, and how can you apply them each for training and developing your horse, regardless of age, breed, experience level, or discipline?

Join Patrick King on July 30 at 7pm (eastern) for a discussion about groundwork and in-hand work. Discover the important differences and how each one offers a unique value to your horse at different stages in their education and development.

This lecture will happen via Zoom, and will be available for REPLAY in case you miss it. We'll send an invitation link before the meeting, and we'll send a replay link after, also.

***** VIRTUAL CLINIC SPACES *****

Due to some travel adjustments over the next 2 weeks, I will be offering LIVE VIRTUAL LESSONS to the public between July 22 and August 6! Recently, virtual lessons have only been available to students enrolled in the online Academy, but I am opening up spaces for these 2 weeks!

Lessons spaces are $100/session, and come with a video copy of your lesson. Lessons are approximately 1 hour in length and will be scheduled every 90 minutes to ensure time for struggling with tech challenges, etc.

Lesson spaces must be paid ahead (via PayPal or Venmo), held via Zoom OR Pivo, and you MUST have a very dependable and strong cell or wifi signal to make sure it works well.

Students coming from the clinics that were scheduled at during these times get first option for lessons, so I cannot promise that all days and times will all be available, but we can sort out and schedule what remains.

Reply to this post in the comments below if you are interested, and we can try to coordinate dates and times.

WHAT IS CLASSICAL HORSEMANSHIP?

Classical horsemanship can be described as a systematic approach to training that builds on the basic principles of the ‘Old Masters’ that we hear about, and is supplemented and supported by new insights that serve the well-being of the horse and its development. Classical horsemanship, then, doesn't care about breed, discipline, tack, or the rider's outfit... but about the willingness of the rider to listen to the horse and keep the horse in the forefront of the equation when it comes to training.

Maria Cooke Equestrian Blog writes some fantastic blog posts/articles. Here's a new one, taking an inside look into Europe's oldest classical academy, the Spanish Riding School.

For over 450 years, the Spanish Riding School has been a centre for cultivating classical riding from within the baroque walls of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. Once at the seat of the Holy Roman Empire, the School began in the 16th century, and continues today with dressage performances all...

It might surprise you to learn that your horse gets hotter much faster than you and is more susceptible to the negative effects of heat stress. Prof. Michael Lindinger, an animal and exerc...
