We've spent the last few months talking about the role of the legs in balance, in transitions, and in lateral work. This month, we'll be adding the complexity of understanding and adjusting the balance and preparing for transitions, figures, and movements. It's going to be a deep dive, for sure!

𝗜𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹?

I believe that our 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭 𝗷𝗼𝗯 as a rider and handler is to build our horse's confidence as a learner. Encouraging and building their mindfulness is a close Number 2.

In the 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, those are 2 things that we work on all the time, on the ground and under saddle.

Real suppleness starts with the acceptance of guidance and the rider's aids. Not obedience... acceptance. Without real acceptance, obedience will come with a mental brace, even if only slight - and this inhibits the body's ability to TRULY be loose and supple. You can't out-muscle an emotion, not matter how "obedient" you think you can get the horse. Suppleness is an inside job, because it starts with acceptance.

“When I purchased a six month old filly at my age of 63, people thought I was a bit crazy. But I felt that I could provide a really good start to her life even though I had never trained a horse so young. I was so lucky to find some people who have helped me along the way and Patrick King’s 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 Program has been incredibly important. My young mare was 3 when I did the first 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲.

Through Patrick’s wisdom of “slower, softer, wait, breathe”, I learned to be patient and ask for tiny improvements with light pressure.
