Separation anxiety is one of the most challenging parts about owning a dog. Depending on the conditions, there are many ways to handle this obstacle. First and foremost, it’s important to begin gradually when desensitizing your dog to you leaving. Here are a few basic tips...

🦴 Create a space where your dog feels safe and comfortable, such as a crate or a specific room. Use comfort items, like a favorite blanket, toy, bone, or even a piece of clothing with your scent to leave with your dog.
🦴 First leave your dog alone for short periods, then gradually increase the duration as they become more comfortable.
🦴 Go through “practice departures” by doing your normal leaving routine, without actually leaving to desensitize your dog to the cues that indicate you’re leaving.
🦴 Avoid dramatic departures AND arrivals. Keeping both departures and arrivals low-key help reduce the nerves that arise during these events.
🦴 Enroll your dog in obedience training to strengthen their confidence, independence, and self-control.

Again, situations can vary greatly depending on the environment, breed, or medical conditions. The sooner you address the problem and implement these strategies, the sooner you’ll resolve the issue and ensure your dog’s well-being!

One of our core principles in command training is guided by what we refer to as the Three Ds:

⚡Duration
This refers to the length of time a dog can consistently follow a command.

⚡Distance
This measures how far a trainer can move away from the dog while the dog still retains the command.

⚡Distraction
This evaluates the dog’s ability to maintain the command amidst various distractions, such as the presence of other animals, the noise of passing vehicles, or the activity of nearby people.

Our goal is to enhance the dog’s performance in each of these areas. With well-balanced training methods, we aim to foster a joyful and confident canine companion, adept in navigating the challenges of any environment 🐕

💬 What do people have to say about training with Leaps N Bounds K9?

“We have a 16-month-old mini Aussie, Darcy, who was generally a very good dog but had some significant issues with reactivity around other dogs. If we encountered another dog on our walk, he would whine, bark, and pull on his leash. This behavior continued to escalate despite my best efforts.

Previous trainers had told me repeatedly to try to get his attention on me by giving him high value treats when we would come near another dog. This did not work!!!

Like other pet owners who have used [Leaps N Bounds K9], I became anxious on our walks and yes, did the ‘hiding behind a car or tree trick’. It was also very embarrassing and I kept making excuses for my badly behaved dog, saying that he is still a puppy.

I found Tom by doing research online and he has been a life saver. During the 3 weeks that Darcy spent with Tom, we received updates on Darcy’s progress via messages and videos.

Since coming home, Darcy has been super calm, and I can take him on walks pretty much anywhere now. He also heels beautifully. I am more relaxed and enjoying our walks; I have people now regularly commenting on what a well-behaved dog I have! Tom’s training was definitely worth the investment and we are very pleased with the results.”

Thank you, Sharon, for sharing Darcy’s incredible success story!

It’s often a misconception, but the truth is...

Dogs are never too old to learn! 🐾

Think about it - they don’t just stop picking up information at the age of 5. Dogs have ever-developing brains that allow them to learn and adapt to new things, no matter the age (just like humans!).

While they may need more time to pick up new things than younger ones, their wealth of life experiences and developed bond with humans often make them more attentive and eager to learn.

Also, training isn’t just about commands - it’s a wonderful way to keep their minds sharp and spirits high!

🐶🎁 Getting ready for a festive Christmas gathering with family? Keeping your dog in 'place' is the perfect approach to maintain their calm demeanor and prevent them from jumping on guests.

'Place' is a designated spot, such as an elevated dog bed, where your pet is required to stay when commanded, until released. This fosters a sense of security and structure that helps instill calmness and discipline.

When teaching the 'place' command, it's crucial to progress gradually. Begin by practicing in the comfort of your home before advancing to your front yard, where your companion can encounter birds, squirrels, and even other humans and dogs. Once your pup is ready, take the training to a nearby park.

This gradual exposure is key in helping dogs develop control, enabling them to stay in a specific spot while tolerating new and unfamiliar surroundings and stimuli.

🐾 A friendly reminder: When training outdoors and expanding your distance, secure a lead to a bench or tree to provide a safety net in case of unexpected events.

🐕 Engaging your dog in activities as simple as jumping onto elevated surfaces or navigating an A-frame can work wonders in building their confidence and keeping their mind and body engaged!

The A-frame serves as an intriguing challenge, demanding balance, focus, physical fitness, and courage from your canine. Even more, the presence of a guiding hand cultivates trust and strengthens the bond between the dog and handler.

Not only are the dogs rewarded with a treat, but they are rewarded with a true sense of accomplishment. This newfound confidence goes beyond the frame and carries throughout other physical obstacles they may encounter.

Gus here began a bit timid. Despite the added challenge of a wobbly A-frame (which was later stabilized), he still was able to overcome the challenge. We were so proud of how far he had come!

When welcoming a shelter dog into your life, it's hard to predict their behavior – they may exhibit signs of aggression, anxiety, territoriality, or even more challenging traits. Here's the inspiring success story of Baobao, who overcame these hurdles with the dedicated support of Leaps N Bounds K9...

✍️ "We got Baobao when she was around 5 months old. Before she was at the shelter for around 2 weeks she lived in the dumps, and had missed her critical socialization period. Despite our best efforts with introducing her to a large variety of people and working on training after a year she was becoming leash aggressive, and was territorial if she was in the same spot for more than 15 minutes. She had severe separation anxiety and would break out of her crate if we left her alone. We decided that we needed to make a change sooner rather than later, and contacted a number of trainers in the Seattle area. We decided to go with Tom due to the large number of incredibly positive testimonials.

After four weeks Baobao came back a much calmer, happier dog. Tom and Bailey worked absolute magic on her behavior. She's her same goofy self, but with a huge number of tools to help her behave and is extremely well behaved over all. Before we would get compliments about how pretty she was, but now people can't stop commenting on how well behaved she is and asking what we did. I cannot recommended Leaps N Bounds K9 enough, Tom clearly loves dogs and is a great source of knowledge whenever we need to text him to ask a quick question." ✍️

We're thrilled to hear about the remarkable progress Baobao has made in her behavior and her interactions with others! Thank you Matthew for sharing Baobao's story 🐕

Bailey introduces the "Place" command to Teddy 🐶

After a few minutes of luring Teddy onto the Place bed, incorporating positive reinforcement with treats, and offering encouraging cues to the dog, Bailey was able to have Teddy consistently complete the "Place" command.

But remember - dog training is not a one-and-done. It's important to maintain a regular practice of the command and integrate it into daily routines.

When training, we also adopt a strategy of conducting training sessions in manageable increments to avoid exhaustive sessions that could overwhelm the dog. Short yet consistent training intervals have shown to be most efficient, allowing the command to be ingrained deeply in the dog's mind and have it be completed effortlessly.

13/06/2023

🐾 Practicing this Place exercise can benefit most in building discipline and focus. Developing these two elements allows dogs to redirect their energy and attention to the owner and retain their overly excited behavior.

While dogs often become hyperactive and impulsive when they encounter stimuli that excite them (such as guests arriving, other animals, or throwing a ball), putting a dog on this elevated place provides a structured and calming activity for them to engage in.

Dogs thrive on structure and clear expectations. By providing your companion with clear instructions and a predictable routine, you’re also giving the dog opportunities to succeed, thus building their overall confidence!

Practicing the 'Place' command can truly go a long way in teaching a dog obedience. The benefits include:

🦴 Behavior management
🦴 Boundary training
🦴 Impulse control
🦴 Safety & convenience
🦴 Confidence building

The 'Place' command is a valuable tool for teaching dogs self-control, boundary awareness, and providing them with a safe and designated space in various situations.

Some dogs react differently when welcoming a newborn (human) child to the family. After noticing unwanted behavior changes, one dog owner turned to Leaps N Bounds K9 for professional help and guidance. This is their success story:

✍️✍️✍️
"Sully is 5 years old and had some pretty stubborn, well-established behavioral issues that were heightened by the arrival of the baby... she barked at the TV, other dogs, the baby crying, and was pretty leash aggressive with other dogs when we were out and about. She also had a history of resource guarding which worried us with the kiddo. She has always been the most loving and affectionate little pup, but she definitely needed to learn some new skills and understand who is in charge.

After a panicked search to find a trainer in the weeks after our sons birth I had a nice chat with Tom. He recommended the four week program as she was a little older and it might take longer for her to unlearn her old habits and learn new ones. We dropped her off and four weeks later picked up a new dog.

She's the same loving, derpy dog, but she doesn't bark at anything (like ever), coexists with our baby perfectly, is a fantastic walker, doesn't care about other dogs when we are out, and is just generally easier to be around. We took her and the baby to a brewery on Sunday and she just sat there, surrounded by other dogs without making a peep. Just content hanging with mom and dad.

We can't recommend Tom enough--both the skills he taught our dog, and the hands on teaching of how to manage our dogs' anxiety has created a new, healthier relationship for us all. I wish we'd done this 4 years ago!"
✍️✍️✍️

Hearing stories like this is so uplifting, and it puts a smile on our faces when hearing your dog succeed! Thank you to Oliver for sharing this story 🐶

Ever notice how you hold a treat in front of a dog and suddenly they're more responsive to commands? This is called 'positive reinforcement'.

Positive reinforcement is one of the most important training methods that involves rewarding a dog for displaying desired behaviors, which encourages the dog to repeat those behaviors in the future.

The rewards can be in the form of treats, toys, praise, or any other positive experience that the dog enjoys. The idea is to teach the dog that good behavior leads to good outcomes.

Examples of positive reinforcement in dog training include:

➡️ Giving a treat to a dog for sitting or lying down on command
➡️ Praising a dog for coming when called
➡️ Giving a belly rub to a dog for staying calm in a stressful situation
➡️ Providing a food reward to a dog for walking nicely on a leash
➡️ Giving verbal praise to a dog for staying in a designated area
➡️ Providing a favorite toy or treat as a reward for learning a new trick or behavior

It's essential to use positive reinforcement techniques consistently and fairly to build a strong relationship between you and your dog.

08/05/2023

There are several benefits to dog training with exposure to different environments, such as...

➡️ Helping socialize the dog with people, other dogs, and different stimuli, which can reduce fear, aggression, and anxiety.
➡️ Allowing the dog to practice and reinforce positive behaviors in a variety of situations, which can improve their obedience and responsiveness to commands.
➡️ Providing mental stimulation and prevent boredom.

When training in different environments, remember to practice and progress through the three Ds: Duration, Distance, and Distraction.

Overall, training with exposure to various places is an essential part of a dog's development and can lead to a well-behaved and happy companion.
