And one more thing about acupuncture...

Dr. Brophy wants everyone to know that acupuncture can be used to treat symptoms directly, but it's maximum benefits lie in addressing underlying patterns that can lead to the presenting symptoms. 💡

He also wants to share that, while it is very safe, some patients may not like the needles, and that it is perfectly ok. We'll adjust our game plan to fit your pet's needs and preferences TOGETHER! 🥰

The phone number at Lancaster's hospital is (717) 393-5084. Call to schedule your pet's first acupuncture session today!

Now that you know what acupuncture is, what can you and your pet expect during the treatments? 🤔🤔🤔 We're so glad you asked! 🤩🤩🤩

Typical acupuncture sessions last 30-40 minutes, with the needles being in place for about 20 minutes. The initial session will be longer, however, as Dr. Brophy will collect a thorough patient history. Sedation is not required for the sessions, but for our anxious friends, it is ok to offer calming medications. We can offer sedation, if needed. Dr. Brophy does recommend having your pet eat prior to coming in for the treatments, too.

There are few side effects with veterinary acupuncture; other than the occasional "sensitive spot", acupuncture is very safe and can be used for most patients. Please note, though, that Dr. Brophy will not see pregnant patients because acupuncture can potentially induce labor.

Most owners report seeing positive benefits with 2-3 sessions. Patients may appear stiff and/or sleepy after a session, initially; thereafter, patients usually feel great for about three days afterwards. After the first two or three sessions, effects become cumulative.

We told you we are now offering acupuncture services, but what exactly does that mean?🤔🤔🤔

Acupuncture is the practice of directly stimulating specific points on the body, generally using very thin needles. This is considered one of the four branches of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM); the other three branches are herbal medicine, food therapy, and tui-na. By stimulating one or multiple points on the body, acupuncture can improve blood and energy (Qi) flow.

The concept behind acupuncture involves redirecting the flow of energy in our bodies. Think of our bodies/your pet's body as a "road map" full of highways and byways. When there is a "traffic jam" and the energy isn't flowing well, the acupuncture helps to clear up the jam and resolve blockages.

Usually, the acupuncture treatments aren't painful for the patients, as they typically only feel the needle for a moment. Once the needle is in place, the patient may feel warming or cooling sensations. If our patient seems to be uncomfortable during the needle administration, Dr. Brophy can either re-adjust the needle itself or move to a different area of the body.

We excitedly interrupt your social media doom-scrolling for from our sister hospital in Lancaster! 📣🚨⚠️

Recently, Dr. Brophy completed his certificate in Veterinary Acupuncture. What does that mean exactly? He participated in 120+ hours of education AND a 30-hour internship, ALONG WITH a written case report, a written final exam, and an in-person practical exam. (*Congrats again, Dr. Brophy!) 🥳

So, what does this mean for your furry family members? Our sister hospital can now able to use Traditional Chinese Medicine to help treat a multitude of ailments, including pain/arthritis, anxiety, allergies, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and more! We can also provide palliative relief, too.

Ready to get started? 📞Call Lancaster at (717) 393-5084 📞to schedule your pet's appointment today! We'll send the records to them. The first session will take a little longer, as Dr. Brophy likes to get an accurate assessment of the situation; however, follow-up acupuncture sessions last around 30-40 minutes, with the needles being in place for approximately 20 minutes.

NOTE: your pet must be up-to-date on it's rabies vaccination for acupuncture administration.

Have we suggested Trazodone for your pet for a vet visit?

Some pups get extra nervous during their vet visits — and that’s okay! We’re here to make every appointment as calm and comfortable as possible.

This sweet golden friend got a little help from trazodone, a gentle medication that can reduce stress and anxiety during veterinary visits. Paired with cozy snuggles, supportive handling, and lots of reassurance, it helps our more nervous patients feel safe while we give them the care they need.

Because every pet deserves a stress-free experience — and maybe a belly rub or two along the way. Thanks for being such a good patient, "Zoe" 🐾❤
