Our Golden Dream

We brought our first Golden Retriever home January 2008. When we went to the Vet for his initial checkup the Vet gave us all the normal instructions: vaccination schedule, flea medicine, heartworm medicine and the recommended food. He then said, “I know you are not going to neuter this handsome boy so we won’t talk about that.” I, of course, asked, “Why?” We got Thomas as a pet for Richard Jr and neutering seemed to be a logical step since all our cats and dogs have always been fixed. The Vet stated that he knew Thomas’ parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. He told us that Thomas came from an excellent blood line and he was breed standard. We had not done the homework people should do when getting a Golden Retriever until after we got home from the Vets.

We enrolled Thomas is a Puppy Class given by our Vet and had a great time in class so we continued with Thomas’ training at the Fort Wayne Obedience Training Club. We began showing Thomas in AKC Sanctioned Events in Rally, Obedience, and Agility. We took classes in Tracking also. Thomas did well in class and in the show ring and earned his AKC Titles: Companion Dog, Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and Rally Excellent. He has earned legs for his Agility Jumpers with Weaves title. We then joined Three Rivers Visiting Dog Club and Thomas became an AAA Therapy Dog and we visited Nursing Homes and Memory Units. Since Thomas is Breed Standard body wise and is intelligent enough to earn AKC Titles. He has the personality that allows him to be a Therapy Dog so the only other stuff we needed to breed him was his medical clearances as recommended by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. We had his hips and elbows checked for dysplasia, had his heart checked by a Canine Cardiologist, and his eyes checked by a Canine Optometrist. Thomas’ hips, elbows, heart, and eyes passed OFA criteria and he was then a breedable dog.

We found another breeder close by that wanted to breed her female with Thomas and we brought Rose home to train her and get her bred by Thomas. Rose has earned her Rally Novice title. Rose and Thomas had their first litter January 1, 2011. After we had Rose at our house for 2 years the other breeder allowed us to add her to our family. Although breeding good quality puppies is a lot of work and expense it brought enormous joy to our lives and the lives of our Byall Acres extended family. We decided with our first litter to donate a Golden Retriever to a deserving family with each litter we have which has brought more joy to our lives than anything else we have ever done. As we adopted new puppies into our family (except Tobi - he was our first born puppy) we trained them and had their medical clearances done prior to breeding them. There is, of course, no guarantee that the puppies produced will not have the dreaded hip dysplasia even if the parents don’t have it but they have a better chance with parents that are cleared.

We breed our Dams every other cycle and our puppies are raised in our home. We now have a puppy room just for puppies and have a special puppy area on our patio. Our Goldens have free run of the house so we do a lot of vaccuming. We raise our puppies with the Puppy Culture Protocol beginning with the Early Neurological Stimulation at 3 days old. We handle and work with the puppies daily beginning their potty training at 3 weeks of age and their basic obedience training at 4 weeks of age. Our puppies are bathed weekly after 2 weeks old and get a manicure/pedicure weekly. We worm our puppies at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks and begin vaccinations at 5 weeks old. We microchip the puppies at 5 weeks with AKC Reunite microchips. We include AKC Registration and AKC Reunite registration with each puppy and provide a Puppy Book with the first events in our puppies lives. With all the work involved with raising these wonderful puppies the hardest thing to do is giving them up.
