5320 S Shore Blvd, Wellington, FL, 33449

In response to an increase of Kentucky clients showing and racing horses in Florida, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital expanded its veterinary services in Wellington in 2017 to provide surgical and ambulatory services to the region year-round. Rood & Riddle purchased an equine hospital and adjacent property on South Shore Boulevard, formerly used by Wellington Equine Associates. After acquisition, the facility was modernized and expanded by adding a state-of-the-art surgical facility housing a second surgery suite with climate-controlled stalls. To accommodate advanced reproduction procedures, the facility has been updated to handle stallions and advanced mare techniques. The addition of the Wellington property has allowed us to better serve our many clients who compete in Florida yearly, both with sport horses and in racing. We provide ambulatory services to our clients with particular expertise in the sport horse disciplines. Board-certified surgeons offer soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, lameness examinations and diagnostic imaging. The internal medicine department has two board-certified internists. A board-certified theriogenologist provides advanced reproduction techniques for stallions and mares. Special podiatry services and shoeing are offered on an appointment basis with one of our veterinary podiatrists.

Did you know?

The Rood & Riddle medical care team that looks after your horse—whether on the farm or in the hospital—is made up of individuals with a wide range of education and experience. Our Lexington hospital is proud to have two Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS) on staff!

These are Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) who are also members of the Academy of Equine Veterinary Nursing Technicians (AEVNT). To become a VTS and be accepted into this academy, technicians must complete an extensive application process, demonstrating a high level of advanced knowledge and skills in equine nursing, and then pass a written examination. Successful applicants are awarded the credentials VTS-EVN.

Sheri Miller
Sheri, a technician for Dr. Larry Bramlage, is a charter member of the academy and was integral in its creation and accreditation in 2008. She is also a founding member of the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians (AAEVT) and has served in various leadership and advisory roles throughout her impressive career.

Andrea Whittle
Andrea, a member of our Lexington Internal Medicine team, has over 20 years of neonatal foal experience. Her application to the academy was officially accepted this month! She recently moved off the AAEVT board and is excited to take this next professional step.

The AEVNT has 27 active members and is committed to the education and professional recognition of credentialed equine veterinary technicians who display excellence and dedication in providing superior nursing care to equine patients.

📢 Calling all horse farms! 🐴

Foals rely on high-quality colostrum for a healthy start to life, but there’s a shortage—and we need YOUR help! 💙 Let’s join forces to make a difference for these newborns.

Rood & Riddle has teamed up with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers' Club for a Colostrum Donation Contest to support foals in need this breeding season.

✨ How it works:

Farms are split into two divisions:
🐎 Less than 50 foaling mares
🐎 More than 50 foaling mares
The farm donating the most colostrum each month in each division wins a heated vest for one of their foaling team members!

📅 Register your farm today: https://form.jotform.com/243434418983060

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.
