I have recently learned that my mentor, Dr. Ron Leick, will be fully retiring at the end of the year. I will be forever grateful to him for helping me learn and get started in this wonderful career of helping horses, and for entrusting his Ohio and Indiana equine clients to me back in 2016. I wish him the best in his retirement!

*Important announcement*

I would like to thank everyone who has recently recommended me and referred others to me. I appreciate you all more than you know. ❤️

However... I am overwhelmed right now. I am only one person, who is not only trying her best to help your horses, but also to return messages, make schedules, do bookkeeping, all while also trying to be a regular person and spend time with family as well as my own horses.

As a result, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily stop taking new clients. I want to continue to have the energy and compassion to continue to help you and your horses to the best of my ability, and in order to do that I need to set limits on my work load. Hopefully this will be very temporary! Thank you for your support 😊

I am your … I drive backroads every weekend searching for your barn to care for your horses. I rarely get lost, but get messed up by the GPS lady about which turns to make, how far to drive, where to go next. Scheduling the route is a hidden talent of mine.

I touch hundreds of horses and I love each one of them. This chiro thing is much more than my job, it's my life. I do more than crack backs and realign spines. I soothe them, help them be confident and relax under pressure, trust and assure them life will be okay.

I am the one who is often called last for complicated cases, for no-one-can-find-it unsoundness, for recoveries that aren’t all there yet and for creaky old mares. The last line of defence … and I almost always deliver. But I should be in your starting line up for movement, health and performance. I want to help to make your horse and you comfortable, sound, and happy for all your days.

I pet your dogs, play with your kids, help you fix your barn. I’ve helped you catch horses, worm them, and even deliver a foal or two and not once did I charge your for these little extras. I'm happy to help.

My hands are sore and swollen each day, yet gentle and kind. Many times I hurt for you. My feet ache from the steel toes that protect me but don’t flex when I jump from floor to base and back again 30 plus times a day and yet you never know I hurt or how sore and stiff and tired I am. I will endure the pain because this is more than my job or my work, it's who I am. It fulfills me.

I see happy, well cared for horses with bright sunny stalls and I see horses mired in muck and urine. I work with healthy, happy horses and horses who have given every ounce of their heart and soul for your pleasure. I rarely see horses that, through ignorance or neglect, are misused, abused and unhappy … but when I do it’s because someone with a heart wants to change that life story to love, respect and joy and has rescued them from a dark place.

It is my greatest joy to return a broken being back to happy and whole.
I wish more people could see that’s what I really do…

I am your animal chiropractor. I’ve watched your kids grow, I’ve seen your life bloom. I’ve been there when tragedy struck and when you experienced the happiness I wish for you always.

A warm or cool dry place with level ground is all I ask for most of the time. For your horses to stand quietly and to be paid on time.
When you think of me, think of the long hours, the hot days, the rain and snow, think of the good things I’ve done with you and your horse.

Think of me as a professional. Think of me as a caring, sincere person who truly wants the best for you and your horse.

You've never paid me for the adjustments my hands give or the muscles I’ve relaxed, you pay me for the wisdom and experience I have. I thirst for that wisdom and I hunger to share it with you.

I am proud of what I do and my promise to you is this, I will do my best to help your horse and be honest with how I can. I may not be the perfect solution or the most cost-effective in the short term. But for life-long investment, I am your animal chiropractor and you always get my heart’s care along with my magic hands.

A few updates and reminders...

I have been holding off as long as possible, but the rising costs of literally everything have made it necessary for me to increase my prices. Fuel and vehicle maintenance are my primary expenses, and those costs have nearly doubled. This will be the first price increase in 7-8 years. Going forward, adjustments will be $75, acupuncture treatments will be $75, laser pricing will still be based on the area being treated. Additional charges may apply for initial evaluations, acupuncture point scans, etc. If you have questions about pricing before your appointment, please feel free to ask!

And a reminder...please make every effort to have your horse ready at the time of our appointment. That means in the barn, reasonably clean and dry if at all possible. I realize I do not always run on time, but I do my best to keep people informed if I am running late (or ahead - it does happen once in a great while 😂) and one of the ways you can help me stay on time is to be ready when I get there. If you have a situation that you think may require extra time, please let me know in advance. I hate that I have to say these things, but I need my time to be respected.

Friends, I will have limited availability this week due to a death in the family. If I haven't contacted you to reschedule, assume that your appointment is still on. Those of you who are waiting for an appointment or to reschedule, I thank you for your patience.

Incorporating Chiropractic Into a Horse’s Care
This therapy is proving to be an essential part of the horse’s routine health and well-being.
Posted by Jennie Cook, DVM | Feb 14, 2022

As riders of all disciplines become more competitive and seek every advantage to keep horses at the top of their game, equine chiropractic adjustments have become more commonplace. Chiropractic is also becoming more common as a lameness diagnostic tool and as part of the injured equine athlete’s rehabilitation program. This area of equine medicine, while relatively new and growing, is proving to be an essential part of horses’ routine health and well-being.

History

Throughout the development of human chiropractic medicine, many chiropractors became curious as to whether chiropractic adjustments could benefit animals, as well. Several researchers explored techniques for animal chiropractic, but it wasn’t until Sharon Willoughby, DVM, a veterinarian who later also studied and became licensed in human chiropractic, merged these two worlds and established equine chiropractic techniques that the art really took off. In 1989 Willoughby founded the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) and, today, it and the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA) regulate and certify veterinarians and human chiropractors to become

What is equine chiropractic?

Owners often believe that chiropractic adjustments involve putting a horse’s luxated (displaced) vertebrae back in place. However, this is not the case.
If the spinal column was that out of alignment, the horse would be severely neurologic. The chiropractor’s goal is to restore full range of motion or mobilization to the many joints in the spinal column. Often, due to the loads we ask horses to carry, the movements we ask them to do, or simply the act of gravity on their spine, the joints that allow for spinal motion become stuck and unable to move properly. This lack of motion can cause muscle spasms, inflammation, swelling, and eventually nerve pain in the area. By finding these areas of subpar motion and manipulating them so they can move again, the chiropractic veterinarian relieves this pain and inflammation and restores full motion to the spine.

When should chiropractic adjustments be performed?

Veterinarians might recommend a horse receive a chiropractic adjustment for a variety of reasons. Most commonly it is part of a horse’s routine performance maintenance. I’ve found that an equine athlete can benefit from a chiropractic adjustment at least every six to eight weeks.
With routine adjustments an equine veterinarian or veterinary chiropractor can often detect early signs of problems. Subtle areas of pain, muscle loss, or stiffness found on a chiropractic adjustment can point to more serious underlying concerns. Often, owners schedule chiropractic adjustments because of back pain and flinching when saddling or brushing their horse. An adjustment can help relieve this pain and possibly alert the owner to issues such as poor saddle fit or spinal arthritis.
Veterinarians can also use chiropractic adjustments to help with their clinical lameness work-up. While an adjustment should not be the only diagnostic or treatment approach used, it could help the veterinarian determine the cause of the lameness. Sometimes, performing an adjustment during a lameness exam can relieve pain caused by lameness compensation and make the true lameness more pronounced and easier to diagnose. Responses to pain or areas of muscle spasms or muscle loss can also clue a practitioner experienced in equine chiropractic in as to where a lameness might originate.

What can a chiropractic adjustment treat?

While equine chiropractic is most commonly used to keep animals comfortable or as a diagnostic tool, it can sometimes stand alone as a treatment for certain conditions. I’ve found that chiropractic adjustments can help treat head shaking, neck stiffness, cinching issues, or behavioral problems. If the difficulty persists or returns, then the veterinarian should pursue further diagnostics.

Finding an equine chiropractor

While many people might claim to be animal chiropractors, it is essential to find someone certified through the IVCA or AVCA. These organizations ensure veterinarians have completed the appropriate coursework and have extensive knowledge of animal chiropractic.

With the new year, I'm attempting to reduce my stress level. Most of the stress in my daily life comes from scheduling. As a people pleaser, I try to get back to you in a timely manner, and get your horse(s) scheduled as soon as possible at a time that works for both of us. That said, a few reminders:

1. (I can't believe I have to say this, but apparently I do) If you have Covid, and you know you have Covid, I don't want to see you. Please reschedule!! My business depends on my health, and I don't want to pass the virus on to my other customers. Stay home! We can find another day!

2. When I contact you to confirm appointments, please try to have accurate counts if you have multiple horses. In addition, if there are services other than chiropractic you are interested in (acupuncture, laser therapy), please let me know that as well. These additional services are time consuming. I make my schedule based on the number of horses I expect to see. I generally add some wiggle room/time to catch up, but obviously I can't plan for everything and if I have multiple appointments that add on horses and/or services, I can get behind schedule very quickly. Please respect my time as well as the clients that have appointments after yours by helping me schedule realistically!

Thank you! I appreciate your business.

Thankful for all of you!

What are the implications of mismatched front feet?

Many horses have high/low front feet, where one foot has a steeper angle then it’s opposite.
But do we realise how much effect this can have on the entire musculoskeletal system!?

We can have different types of high/low.
A boxy foot and an ideal foot.
An ideal foot and a flat foot.
A flat foot and a boxy foot.
Studies have shown that that amount of difference in angle between the two is proportional to the effects on the horses biomechanics.

These horses may require much more regular physiotherapy or chiropractic due to the profound compensations which are akin to sub clinical unilateral lameness. Especially in the back as Gomez Alvarez et al. (2007) measured the majority of compensations for lameness are seen in the spine.

This is a great example of how the hoof and the horse are inextricably linked as the hoof conformation is created by physiological influences. Below is a comprehensive graphic of the effects of high/low.

Our Story

Nancy Adams, DVM graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 with an equine emphasis. In 2012, she completed a yearlong internship in equine medicine at Kansas State University. Returning to her longtime hometown of Cincinnati, she decided to pursue further education in several complementary treatment modalities that had always been of interest, and completed post-graduate training in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society and animal chiropractic through Parker University while also working in small animal practice. In 2018 she became certified in equine kinesiology taping through Rocktape and began to offer laser therapy.

Dr. Adams has a varied equine background. She started out in 4-H and participated in Western and English disciplines, ranging from horsemanship and showmanship to contesting and jumping. She moved from 4-H shows to competing in jumpers up to the A circuit level. In 1999 she switched to eventing and has been competing in eventing and dressage ever since. Dr. Adams currently owns McVille, a 1992 Thoroughbred gelding and Bright Monday (Bunny), a 2009 Trakehner gelding. Dr. Adams is now available for acupuncture and chiropractic appointments for horses in greater Cincinnati and surrounding areas. She is currently licensed in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. As a rider herself, with experience in many different disciplines, she is able to interpret what the rider is feeling and use that information to find problems the horse may be experiencing. Her favorite thing about her job is the fact that she can offer additional options that work in conjunction with traditional medicine to provide pain relief and healing to her patients.
