****ALERT*** Detection of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus in California

On May 17th, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa, confirmed a finding of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV) on an equine premises in San Diego County, California. One horse, an 11-year-old Quarter Horse mare, on the premises met confirmed vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) index case definition with compatible clinical signs and virus isolation positive results for VSNJV on swabs from oral lesions. Additionally, three other equine premises in San Diego County, California, have now met subsequent confirmed case definition with compatible clinical signs and real-time RT-PCR detection for VSNJV.

Symptoms include oral ulceration, blister-like lesions on the muzzle, lips, tongue, ears, udder, sheath, or coronary bands. VSV is spread by insect vectors including black flies (Simulium species), sand flies (Lutzomyia species) and biting midges (Culicoides species). It can also be spread through direct and indirect contact. Good biosecurity practices and insect control can help reduce or prevent VSV spread.

This detection will likely result in additional interstate and international travel restrictions traveling from, to, or through California.

Additional information and a map of the affected area are contained the incident situation report which is accessible at the following link: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/equine/vsv/vesicular-stomatitis

⚠️ Warning! Graphic! ⛔️ Check out the stages of wound healing over the course of only 6 weeks!! This filly caught her leg between two pole panels and suffered trauma to the bone and soft tissue on both sides of her canon bone. At the initial visit Dr Bowen tapped the fetlock joint to make sure it wasn’t involved, removed half of a broken splint bone, cleaned the wound edges and applied amnion grafts and a leg wrap to cover the exposed bone. The filly received anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, and was walking well on the limb. The wound healed by second intention (first intention would be skin to skin closure, which was not possible in this case), but mainly with diligent leg wrapping skills by the owner and patience, yahoo!!

**Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) Updates:
NEW: EHV-1 Quarantine in Sonoma County**

March 23, 2022: A 14-year-old Quarter Horse mare in Sonoma county displaying neurological signs was confirmed positive for Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) secondary to equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1 neuropathogenic strain) on March 22nd. The horse has been isolated at her home premises since March 15th, and was quarantined along with three (3) additional equids on the property on March 23rd. 👀 Look out! Eye injury is a common emergency in horses. From trauma or it itching, they can develop a corneal ulcer or superficial scratch to the most superficial layer of the eye. Your veterinarian will stain the eye and the defect will show up bright green as seen here. Horses will present with squinting, tearing, and are very painful. Treatment includes topical medication, anti-inflammatories, and some fancy headgear to keep from rubbing!!
