What an incredible day of service, community, and growth! December 7th marked the final volunteer day and the dedication of the Atkinson Street Community Garden, and we couldn’t be more proud of the amazing work done by our youth volunteers and community supporters.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to transform the space into a clean, welcoming hub for the neighborhood. The group worked together to construct the garden beds that will soon be overflowing with fresh, nutritious produce. Using leaves and other natural materials, our young leaders learned how to reuse and recycle in the most sustainable way. 🌱 The first seeds of growth were planted, symbolizing the start of something beautiful for our community.

This garden is more than just a place to grow food; it’s a place to grow community, provide educational opportunities, and inspire positive change. The dedication of our volunteers and neighbors has truly made this vision a reality.

We’d also like to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported this project, including SEDD, whose mini-grant helped us take this dream from an idea to reality. Your contributions continue to make a lasting difference!

📅Don’t forget—this is just the beginning! We look forward to watching the garden flourish and welcoming all of you to be part of its growth. If you would like to get involved in community gardening text ez gardening to 3182328788 and let's get growing 🌱

Indoor air on average, is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoors. In the Western world we spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors. House plants can significantly reduce the amount of pollutants in the indoor environment. Studies show plants can help remove formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, benzene, ammonia, and trichloroethylene from the air as well as increase oxygen levels. Do you own any houseplants?

🌿 🌿 One of the easiest and most popular houseplants around—Golden Pothos, also known as Devil’s Ivy!

Whether you're a gardening newbie or a seasoned plant parent, this beauty is a must-have for your indoor space. Thrives in almost any condition—low light, bright light, and it even forgives you if you forget to water it for a while! Pothos helps remove toxins from the air, making your home or office a healthier place to be. Its heart-shaped, variegated leaves add a touch of nature’s charm to any corner of your home.

🪴 Water when the soil feels dry (don’t overwater!).

Place it where it gets indirect sunlight. Let it trail from a hanging basket or climb a trellis for a stunning display. If you’re looking for a plant that’s both gorgeous and resilient, Golden Pothos is your answer. Let’s get growing! 🌱

Over the past few weeks, these young leaders have participated in a series of gardening activities designed to inspire growth, positivity, and teamwork:
Through seed starting, they learned that every great outcome begins with a single step, symbolizing the power of new beginnings and setting positive intentions for the future.
By propagating plants and gifting them to loved ones, they experienced the importance of kindness and looking out for one another. With composting basics, they discovered how to transform waste into something valuable, teaching them lessons in resilience and renewal. Through journaling about their gardening journey, they practiced mindfulness, reflected on their contributions, and set goals for personal and community growth. During team planting activities, they worked side by side to create something meaningful as a group, fostering collaboration and a strong sense of community.

These activities have laid the groundwork—literally and figuratively—for what’s to come. Their efforts will culminate with the installation of the Atkinson Street Community Garden, a lasting gift to the neighborhood that will provide fresh produce, hands-on learning opportunities, and a gathering place for local residents to connect and grow together.

Join Us for the Final Cleanup & Garden Dedication December 7th at 705 Atkinson Street. This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the SEDD Mini Grant, which provided the resources to turn this dream into a reality. Thank you for investing in our community and our youth!

Marigolds are superheroes in the garden! These vibrant flowers bring a world of benefits that every gardener should know:
🐞 Marigolds are like a bug magnet for good bugs! Ladybugs, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps are drawn to their vibrant blooms. These tiny allies feast on harmful pests, keeping your garden naturally in balance.
Speaking of pests say goodbye to uninvited guests! Marigolds emit a scent that sends pests like aphids, nematodes, and whiteflies packing. It's like having a protective force field around your plants.
Did you know you can eat marigolds? These colorful blooms add a zesty kick to salads, rice dishes, and more. Plus, they're packed with antioxidants and vitamins, giving your meals a healthy boost!
Saving marigold seeds is a breeze! Once the flower heads fade and dry out, simply pluck them off, gently crush them to release the seeds, and store them for next year's garden adventures. You’ll never have to purchase marigold seeds again. Let's get growing!

As we approach the first frost (typically mid to late November in Zone 8b), now is the perfect time to think about your garden's overwintering plan. Protecting your plants and prepping your garden for the colder months will ensure a strong, thriving start to the next growing season.

To start, it’s important to mulch your perennials with a layer of 2-3 inches of mulch to insulate their roots and protect them from the chill. For any sensitive plants, consider using frost covers, blankets, or cloches to shield them from freezing temperatures, especially on frosty nights. Tidying up your garden is also key—removing dead or diseased foliage will prevent pests and diseases from settling in for the winter. If you have potted plants, try moving them to a sheltered area or indoors to keep them safe from frost damage.

And don’t forget, there are still crops you can plant directly in your garden! Garlic, onions, shallots, spinach, kale, mustard greens, carrots, and beets are all cold-hardy and can be sown now to give you a head start on your spring harvest.

If preparing your garden for winter feels like a daunting task, Taynylei Plantery is here to help. Whether you need assistance mulching perennials, winterizing soil, pruning, or prepping your garden for cold-weather planting, we’ve got you covered. Let’s make sure your garden stays healthy and productive through the winter months.

Message us today to schedule your winter prep service. Together, we’ll grow something great—no matter the season! 🌱

Are you growing rosemary? Rosemary is a fragrant evergreen herb native to the Mediterranean. The herb is a good source of iron, calcium, and vitamin B-6. It’s used to fight inflammation, help digestion, enhance memory and concentration, and to prevent some forms of cancer. A report published in the Journal of Food Science revealed that adding rosemary extract to ground beef reduces the formation of cancer-causing agents that can develop during cooking.

Just like a single sunflower seed holds the potential to grow into a magnificent head full of seeds, our goals and dreams are the seeds of our potential.
Think about it: when we set out to accomplish something, we're essentially planting a seed of intention. With each step we take, each action we put into motion, we're watering that seed and nurturing it with our dedication.
Just as a sunflower seed requires time, patience, and consistent care to transform into a vibrant bloom, our goals demand our unwavering commitment and effort. It's the small, steady actions we take each day that build up, just like drops of water that eventually create a river of accomplishment. 💧
So, let's remember that every little stride we make towards our aspirations is like planting another seed in the garden of our dreams. Even when progress seems slow, each action is a promise to ourselves that we believe in our potential.
As we continue to put one foot in front of the other, let's keep nurturing our intentions with perseverance, passion, and purpose. Soon enough, we'll witness the incredible growth that emerges from our efforts, just like that single sunflower seed that becomes an abundant source of inspiration and success. 🌻🌟
Keep planting, keep believing.

Mint has been used for thousands of years to aid with upset stomach and indigestion.
Mint is a natural antibiotic, antifungal, and antiseptic. Mint contains menthol, a natural aromatic decongestant that helps to break up phlegm and mucus. Menthol's cooling effect can help relieve a sore throat. You can grow your own endless supply of mint by cutting a stem and placing it in water. In a couple of weeks the stem will grow roots and you can pot it!

🌱 I had the pleasure of helping Shady Grove Elementary School kick off their composting program! The students got hands-on experience with seed saving, carefully removing pumpkin seeds to store for next year’s planting. Then, we placed the pumpkins in the new compost pile to begin the breakdown process. 🍂 Composting is a fantastic addition to science lessons, and most schools already have compostable items on hand. Excited to see these young learners dive into sustainable practices!
