MDA Warns of Elevated Mycotoxin Levels in Missouri
Producers and Feed Manufacturers Should Monitor Mycotoxin Levels in 2023 corn.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –The Missouri Department of Agriculture encourages Missouri feed manufacturers, corn producers and livestock producers to monitor aflatoxin and fumonisin levels in corn harvested in 2023. Mycotoxin levels have increased in Missouri corn due to prolonged drought. Feed contaminated with high aflatoxin and fumonisin levels may impact livestock.

Love, love, LOVE this doe! She's such a great mama and so very productive. Got her clipped and pulled kids for a few hours, and I'm pleased. She's not filled to capacity here, but she's very pretty, and sweet as can be, imho!

Happy Birthday to the newest additions to RHV. Introducing the latest kids out of Dragonfly CP Chicquera (Dragonfly SOL Capriccio x GCH Dragonfly IH Peregrine 09-01 91 EEEE). These kids are sired by RHV CNT Amos *B (SG RHV CTO Cointreau +*B x SG RHV SMF Fawn 7*M ELITE), whose two littermate sisters are 9 months shy of 3 YEARS in continuous milk from their first freshening August 2020!! (How's that for persistent lactations, huh??) Chicquera and aunts of these kids really have high production and the "will to milk"!

Yes, there is a lot of genetic potential in these kids, and I'm going to be selfish and keep the gold/white doe kid for myself as a replacement for her granddam, Fawn, who we lost this winter. There are two very nice looking bucks in this litter who are available. Though just born, width thurl-to-thurl is fantastic. Those who know of Peregrine will remember that she scored "E" in rump several times throughout her lifetime. Fingers crossed these boys will follow suit ;o)

Five.... Gwyn had 5 kids today... One tiny one, but everyone is doing well so far. 3 does and 2 bucks, all black with various amounts of white. First kids sired by Sinai Thunder O Elohim *B! Gwyn is really impressing me with her udder, volume of production and how much room she has in there to fish out those kids. She's a champ in my book!

This doe is a favorite of mine who has gotten little publicity. Meet RedHorseValley BC Du a Gwyn {RHV PZ Butch Cassidy *B x RHV CNT Drop of Golden Sun} (Yes, I did clear the name with our colleague who owns that herdname before registering this girl!) She freshened once before with a single buck/wether. Milk testing was nearly impossible for her first lactation so I don’t have “impressive” numbers to share. Never-the-less, I know this genetic package and the joy of milking her! This photo of her developing udder (she’s due about 5/3) is insufficient to show how nice it appears in person… ya know, the black goat thing….

Bred to Sinai Thunder O Elohim *B (SG Cedar View Olivero +*B x Sinai Thunder MD Elouisa 2*M 02-04 88 VVVE), we are hopeful for a doe kid to keep, but any others will be available.

Contact us ASAP if you would like to be notified of available kids!

Just in from doing chores… It is a bit “nippy” out there today! I uncovered this much needed sweater archived in my drawer. This classic was a “nudge” purchase by a certain Scottish border collie Rescuer at one of the Highland Games we worked. Reminds me of how much I loved my dearest Gael, imported in utero

Dragonfly RY Elation, rocking the goat coat, trying to entice the young boys despite her senior status! She certainly is enjoying the bit warmer temperatures as those extreme conditions can prove deadly. Happy to see her run around strutting her stuff.

We regrettably said our final farewell to SG RHV CNT Flashy Citrine *M yesterday following a tragic accident. Shown here as a kid with her dam, SG RHV CS Golden Topaz, Trina was a very special friend, always making a point of coming to give me kisses whenever I was where she could get to me. Perhaps to those who only knew her in photos, she was best known for her magnificent teat size. Our grief is immeasurable right now….

Breeding season is upon us! I've been a bit too busy to post much, but I just wanted to post a breeding that happened today. SG RHV CTO Rachel 4*M (a SG Rosasharn BB Cento ++*B daughter out of SG Agape Oaks M Golden Fire 3*M) was bred to RedHorseValley PZ Miku *B. Given the number of does I have, I haven't bred Rachel for several years. Today she was obviously wanting to be bred and she sure isn't getting any younger! I'm currently milking Miku's sister, Grounded, and boy she has a lovely, well attached and easily milked udder! For a first freshener, she is persistently productive and I'm very pleased with her (though her name reflects her "boss mare" attitude, LOL). So, ran a quick check of the inbreeding coefficient on taking Rachel to Miku, and decided to give it a go. Kids will be 31.3% Cento by blood, with 3.1% homozygosity. Overall coefficient of inbreeding is 13.5% which is perfectly reasonable in my experience with these genetics. Naturally, I'll likely retain something out of this litter, but if you are interested in making a reservation on this or any other breeding we have lined up, check out our 2023 planned breedings! http://www.redhorsevalley.com/planned-breedings/

I’m so impressed with ValleyVet.com! I made an order yesterday for tetracycline among other items, since I was running low treating a case of pinkeye. I received the order before noon today!! Amazon can’t beat that. Kudos!
BTW, for those who need to treat with tetracycline, biomycin is much less painful upon injection than LA200.

I do apologize, however with the decreased availability and increased pricing of 64 ounce canning jars, we are increasing the milk jar deposit to $7.50 per jar/lid. Unfortunately, a few too many found it inconvenient to return our jars/lids and that leaves us with yet another loss. I know times are tight right now for everyone, but we cannot sustain losses indefinitely.

We do have a blessed surplus of milk, and if you are interested in trying some sweet, creamy, nutritious and delicious Nigerian Dwarf goat milk, drop us a line for an appointment to come try some. We'd love to supply milk for another family or two!

ADGA friends:
It is my personal opinion that currently, ADGA does not have the capability to mediate DNA identity and parentage verification services. Too many of us are being told that there is no DNA on file, when ADGAgenetics and VGL states that there is DNA on file. Too many people have had their animals removed from the herdbooks due to sire exclusions, and the Registry has not been as proactive in helping to resolve issues in a timely and respectful manner. Too many breeders are affected when animals are removed from the registry that have grand kids and even great grand kids impacted and registrations removed.

There is an alternative. AGS has a registry affiliate program with UCDavis Veterinary Genetics laboratory. You can go to VGL online and order DNA testing services direct from the lab preferred by ADGA, click the "AGS Registry Affiliate", and you will receive a discount on DNA testing services. You can then fill out the required information (remember include birthday, breed, tattoo in order for ADGA to accept results should you wish to pay $15 to ADGA to receive those results directly from the lab), and you can immediately print out submission forms and mail the hair direct to the lab SAME DAY!!

VGL keeps the DNA testing results (including the genetic marker report) online and accessible to you, and also provides the information to AGS for their purposes. You do not need to grant indemnity to any institution against 3rd party lawsuits! Moreover, you can request parentage verification for any of your animals if you provide the ADG/AGS/GO DNA ID number for parents in the appropriate location in the VGL online submission forms. The DNA case ID is in the format ADG # # # # # for those submitted through ADGA, or AGS # # # # for those with AGS registry affiliation. For those done through VGL without registry affiliate, the format is GO # # # # #

I also believe that we should share these DNA ID numbers with each other so that we can parentage verify any goat we own, without being shackled by ADGA who is the only one that can request parentage verification for samples sent using them as a mediator! To that end, I have created and am sponsoring a database/spreadsheet where people can share DNA test information, even if purchased through ADGA. It is impossible to trust that the Registry is capable of protecting our investments in DNA testing at this point in time, and many are suffering severe financial losses, partially due to ADGAs failings at being a middle-man for DNA testing services.

Preservation and Improvement of the Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goat

Welcome to Red Horse Valley on the web. Here we will strive to provide information on our efforts to preserve and improve the Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goat breed. These little goats are excellent homestead milkers, providing sweet, rich milk as well as companionship. Our goals are to maintain and improve quality milk production (high butterfat and protein content), as well as hardiness, feed efficiency, and correct conformation. We have carefully chosen our foundation animals, bringing the "best" genetics we could afford from coast-to-coast and points between, in order to build upon their strengths to the best of our abilities. We choose to maintain doe lines who possess excellent mothering ability and who are good goat citizens among the herd.

We are located in the Missouri Ozarks near Rolla, Missouri.
