This kitten? Living the dream: big bed, zero responsibilities.

And before you ask — yes, all our kittens have been adopted. (The audacity, right?) But don’t panic, kitten season isn’t over. We’ve got more tiny furballs arriving next weekend!

Until then, may we interest you in some top-tier adult cats and dogs? They’re equal parts cuddly, quirky, and fully qualified for couch-sharing.

Our adoption open house hours are today and tomorrow from 12–3pm. Get ahead of the game by filling out an application at www.HVARS.org/adoptions.

Come meet your future roommate. They already think you’re cool.

Late Thursday night, HVARS received an urgent call from our friends at Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County - CARE of DC — over 80 dogs had just been pulled from a horrific hoarding situation in Brooklyn, NY. These dogs were found living in truly unimaginable conditions: crammed into filth, severely neglected, many covered in f***s, urine, and painfully matted fur. Some were so weak they could barely stand. Among them were everything from fragile newborn puppies to extremely elderly seniors.

Within hours, two rescue organizations came together to accomplish something incredible. Both HVARS and CARE of DC committed to taking in 40 of these dogs together — a massive undertaking that will require weeks, even months, of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and resources.

Since the first vanload arrived Friday afternoon from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), it has been nonstop. Our teams have been working around the clock to stabilize these dogs — providing urgent veterinary care and medically necessary grooming to ease years of suffering and neglect.

Some dogs were so severely matted they were having trouble breathing. As we shaved away pounds of f***s-caked fur, you could see the physical relief wash over them. Many were so matted that until shaved, we couldn’t even determine their gender.

We absolutely couldn’t have done this alone. Pampered Pooch Grooming & Boutique stepped up without hesitation — grooming and bathing dozens of dogs. Not only did Rachel help us until midnight on Friday night, she and her team spent their Saturday night working hard to get everyone feeling so much better.

This case is a heartbreaking reminder that animal hoarding is a serious mental illness, and the animals caught in it suffer in silence. The individual involved likely thought she was helping — that she was saving these dogs — until it spiraled far beyond her control. People who hoard animals often don’t intend to cause harm, but love without resources, space, or medical care becomes neglect. In this case, the animals paid the ultimate price. These dogs lived like this for years — trapped in filth, fear, and pain, hidden behind closed doors.

That’s why it’s so important to speak up. If something feels wrong, it probably is. If you see something, say something. These animals don’t have a voice — but we do. It’s up to all of us to be their advocates, to shine a light in the dark, and to speak for the voiceless before it’s too late.

This rescue is a shining example of what’s possible when animal welfare groups come together. It truly takes a village in the rescue world — and we’re proud to be part of one that shows up when it matters most.

We’re just at the beginning of this journey. These dogs have a long road to recovery — but now, they’re safe. They’re loved. And for the first time, they have a future.

Please follow their stories. Consider donating, fostering, or volunteering — and help us give these resilient souls the second chance they’ve always deserved.

For many in that home, we were too late. But for the several dozen we were able to save — along with those rescued by other dedicated local organizations — this is the first day of the rest of their lives. After years of suffering, they are finally safe. They are finally seen. And they are now the lucky ones.

In addition to monetary donations, HVARS is in urgent need of supplies to help care for these dogs. We’re currently accepting donations of newspapers, towels, and sheets. These basics go a long way in helping us keep everyone comfortable, clean, and safe during their recovery.

Thank you for standing with us, and with them. Together, we are the village. Together, we save lives.

Raise your ears if you’re as excited as Jasmine is for it finally not being 1,000 degrees outside! We were so ready for this heatwave to be over with 🥵.

As we kick off summer, remember to keep your pets safe in the warmer temps! Here are some quick tips to follow:

🐾 Always provide fresh, cool water
🐾 Never leave pets in hot cars (even with the windows cracked)
🐾 Limit walks to cooler times of day and check pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s certainly too hot for their paws
🐾 Make sure pets have a way to cool down if outside, such as kiddie pools, cooling mats, or even damp towels
🐾 Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or stumbling. Contact your vet if you notice these symptoms

Let’s make the summer season safe and fun for our four-legged friends!

PS: Wanna make these Yoda ears part of your life? Jasmine’s ready to go home! Fill out an adoption application for her at www.HVARS.org/adoptions

Our 7th Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser was a tee-rific success (sorry, had to), and it’s all thanks to YOU!

We’re so grateful for everyone who showed up, chipped in, and made our event such a success! Whether you swung a club, sponsored, donated, volunteered, or even just shared the event link, you made a difference.

Every dollar raised goes straight to the animals in our care. Your support helps us continue doing what we love most: saving lives.

Big love to our amazing HVARS community!

Remember these two heartbreakers? Horton and Lorax were found as strays and never reclaimed by their owner, so now they’re officially a part of the HVARS fam!

Horton (the smaller one with the blue collar) and Lorax (the larger red guy with the orange collar) are the epitome of two peas in a pod. They’re side-by-side for everything, whether it’s walks, naps, or judging the neighbors. Their bromance is real, and yes, they’re a package deal.

Looking for a matched set? These boys are the built-in best friend duo you never knew you needed…until now!

Bodhi is our one-year-old heartthrob with ice blue eyes that could stop traffic. His soulful stare? Yeah, it’s most likely aimed directly at your snack.

He’s goofy, doofy, and the life of the party with his dog friends. When it comes to cats or tiny creatures though? Let’s just say he gets a little TOO interested. 😅

Ready for a new bestie who’s part model, part class clown? Bodhi’s your guy!

Our Story

Hudson Valley Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) charity organization, located at 9 Barnes Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY. HVARS was started to help pets in need get the medical attention they deserved for an affordable price. We run a low cost clinic, where our vets on staff do everything from well healthcare check ups & vaccines to Spay/Neuter services and more complicated surgeries. Anything from basic routine care to bloodwork, x-rays and dentals. We are also an adoption/rehabilitation center, taking in close to 1,000 cats/kittens, dogs/puppies and farm animals each year. The domestic animals are evaluated and vetted, then eventually put up for adoption to find their forever families while the farm animals are adopted out or stay at our sanctuary for the remainder of their lives depending on the needs of each animal. The last thing we offer is wildlife rehabilitation, in the spring and summer months we take in anywhere between 50-150 injured and orphan wildlife- mainly we focus on Raccoons, Skunks, Fox and Fawn but we assist in placing all species to the proper rehabilitator to ensure they are receiving everything they need to thrive and eventually be released back into the wild.
