Stopping by a small creek on the way to Devil's Hole in Linville Gorge.
Going back in time some years. Belle was 2 and Pepper was still under a year. Pepper was staying with me for a few days so I took them both to the Haw river for some exploration time.
I tend to practice recall frequently during an outing no matter how used to it a dog may be. Belle is 7 and I still do it as a matter of practicing good habits.
Recall never means the fun is over...it doesn't mean come to me and that's it...it means let's walk this way because I have something else for you to see that is interesting. I personally can never be as interesting as what they are discovering in nature...so get the ego out of the way! I represent the way to discovering new and interesting things...and I deliver on that promise.

Been working on a new dance with Belle. We do this nightly and added new elements over time. There are no rules for the dance, some things Belle added and some things I added.
I use the WAIT command all the time in many different ways. Here is the classic example that comes in handy. Waiting in the car, until given the all clear. This is a safety issue because dogs bolting out of cars can be disastrous, especially when there is traffic. In this particular instance we are in an empty parking lot, I know the area and I trust Belle off leash. However, if this were a more active or unknown area I would put the leash on before she exits.
Sniffing out some nature!
As you can see the focus is on Belle in this exercise, but have a look at little AJ falling into a rhythm. She is very engaged and finding her place naturally. She is learning by observing. She enjoys one-on-one training but she REALLY enjoys being involved in dance sessions with Belle. The purpose of this exercise is for engagement, bonding, and fun, nothing overly structured or stressful.
Conditioning a dog, especially a hound that has the DNA to chase after every living thing, to not chase after deer takes time and work. Mind you Belle still has a passionate affinity for rabbits and squirrels and that's cool, she is still a dog after all. It is her nature. But I am very happy she has gotten to this point with deer.
Nice evening and enjoying the local urban wildlife. We were down wind, but I doubt it would spook this deer if we were not. Belle smells the deer though. That said I was speaking a bit too quiet for Belle to hear me clearly. #sniffari
Dog. Stick, Clover....Bliss. This girl loves a garden.
Had a fantastic session with a Portuguese Water Dog that I have worked with from the beginning of puppy development. Today we started with the fundamentals of heeling. He took to it right away and even did some weaving off leash by the time we finished up. What a champ!
Switching it up. Sometimes you have to wait first.
Belle getting her hussle on!
Belle is so great when working with other dogs, especially young puppies as small as this.
Being chill with the deer.
When hiking I like to practice/reinforce various scenarios. The most common one is the WAIT. WAIT is different than STAY. STAY means I have a dog STAY in a specific location until I come back and give a FREE. WAIT on the trail is more casual. It basically means WAIT for me...Let me catch up. WAIT is also used with doors, crates, and cars.. Basically...it's a pause button for your dog. As you can hear, I also like to use commands in combination with the word GOOD. This way we are emotionally rewarding our dogs with the command. All dogs, even well trained ones, will push the boundaries of a command, it is OUR discipline to tweak, refine, and reinforce good behavior.
