I got so many questions about what happened to this poor pup so I’ve decided to post it!

This sweet angel was unfortunately bitten in the eye by her sister who is also a Shi Tzu. It happened due to her sister becoming territorial over food 🥩 . Even with her eye proptosed so severely, she continued to wag her tail, eat, and be the sweet pup she has always been. (Animals never cease to amaze me).The owners tried to schedule an enucleation when it happened, but were told there’s no availability until August. That’s when they showed up to our ER. Our team got going on this right away with starting antibiotics and pain medications, followed by the procedure of surgically removing the eye (enucleation). This was probably one of the most gratifying surgeries I’ve performed. She literally looked like she was smiling after we got that painful eye out.

And the good news is, animals do not rely on their vision nearly as much as we do. Rather, their scent is the primary way through which they take in the world. Luckily for her, she still has her other eye and plenty of scent glands to navigate the world 😊 🐶😎

Let’s talk about food allergies in pets!
It turns out that food allergies are actually not as common as many people think they are. In fact, only about 10-15% of pets actually have a true food allergy!
*
*
Food allergies occur when an animals immune system reacts to a component of the food and sees it as an invader rather than a food item, and mounts an inappropriate immune response. This can present as either gastrointestinal issues (vomiting and diarrhea) and/or skin issues (itchiness, and skin infections). In most cases, this component that mounts the response is actually the PROTEIN source in the diet (not grains and other carbohydrate sources, although in RARE cases this can be a contributor as well).
*
*
Furthermore, food allergies are difficult to test for because the only way to really “test” for them is with an elimination diet trial. This means either purchasing a prescription Hydrolyzed protein diet from your vet, OR trying a novel protein diet with very limited ingredients and a new protein source your pet has never tried before. For the “test” to really work, you must feed this and only this diet for a period of time, to see if there is a difference in their clinical signs. Then, you can re-challenge them with their old food to see if their symptoms start back up. Some people opt out of the re-challenging portion if they are happy with how their pet is doing on the special diet!
*
*
If your your pet suffers from skin allergies or GI issues, it’s a good idea to talk to your vet about trying an elimination diet trial to try and rule this out as a cause or contributor to their symptoms. The cutie in the photo presented for vomiting once a day, so we are trying a hydrolyzed protein diet to see if this helps alleviate her symptoms! 💕🐶

Nothing like hanging with my bestie on a sunny summer day🐶💜👩🏽 However, I keep our time out in a sun to a minimum because pups can get heatstroke on really hot days like this more quickly than we even realize.
*
*
*
Heat stroke is an elevation in the body’s temperature that can cause damage to the internal organs. Signs to look for include heavy panting, lack of coordination, excessive salivation, vomiting, purple tongue, etc. Animals are at increased risk for heat stroke if they are really young, really old, overweight, or a brachycephalic breed (aka a smush faced breed). If you notice some of the signs I mentioned, it’s best to take your pet to the vet immediately and turn on the AC and spray some water on them in the meantime.
*
*
*
Luckily, heat stroke can be easily avoided by taking plenty of water with you for outdoor activities on warm days, taking frequent breaks to let them cool down, and providing them with plenty of shade, and generally keeping the time outdoors in the sun to a minimum on super hot days like the one we are having today.

Being a GP veterinarian means wearing so many different hats. Every day is different and every case is unique. We switch from being general wellness docs to doing surgeries, anesthesia, dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, cardiology , and the list goes on—all in a days work! This career definitely pushes me to my limits and keeps me constantly learning and growing as a veterinarian, and as a person. It can at times be overwhelming and exhausting, and I’ve often felt in over my head. But at the end of the day, I absolutely love what I do and love that I have the capacity to help animals. 🥰

And, for anyone wondering—This cutie was in today for torn nail (which can be quite painful) , and so he got some sedation and pain medication and we removed the rest of the nail safely. He’s going to be just fine!

And finally, I love that has new bold colors like “Electric Orchid”, which is the one I’m wearing in these photos. Go check them out and get your own, because let me tell ya, it makes me feel fabulous when I wear these in the hospital 🤩

Just a friendly reminder to get your pups vaccinated for Canine Influenza if you live in SoCal and they interact with other dogs! The outbreak is unfortunately going strong, but luckily the vaccine is very safe!

As many of you know, last week my little babe was attacked by a much larger dog when I was out of town, and had two large lacerations as a result 🥺

My parents are amazing and they rushed her to an ER where she was hospitalized. Luckily x-rays showed very minimal internal trauma—only pneumomediastinum (which is a condition where there is air present in the chest cavity). She was discharged, but when I got home I noticed she just wasn’t doing well. Her wound looked terrible, she had a high respiratory rate, and she seemed to be in a lot of pain. I took her back to the ER and luckily our hero, .koa_surf_dog went back in and revised her laceration repair so beautifully! She also placed a JP drain, so that the fluid would not accumulate in her wound. She also cultured her wound and it turned out she had an infection that was resistant to most antibiotics. Luckily, we were able to get her on the right one based on that culture.

Fast forward to today, and Kimba is all better! Just has a weird bald patch and some scar tissue—in honor of Halloween I’m calling her Frankendoggie🧟‍♂️🐶

Im just so incredibly grateful she’s okay, because things could have been so much worse 😭 and I’m so thankful for the people who were by my side and helped me through this very traumatic event. Even us vets need other vets when it’s our own baby!! And finally, it made me even more in awe of what an incredible job I have that I get to help other people’s pets when they are in need like I was. 💪🏼💕🐶🐱
