You see a dog in a hot car - what can you do?

In Florida, you CAN take action - even by breaking a window- to rescue a suffering pet, but you MUST do the following:

1. Determine that the animal (or vulnerable child!) has no means to escape on its own.

2. Have a reasonable belief that unless you take action, the dog will be in imminent danger, (such as collapsing from heat, suffering heat stroke, or death)

3. You must call 911 and inform the dispatcher of the circumstances OR - if there is no time, you must call 911 immediately afterward.

4. You must not cause any more damage than is necessary to perform the rescue.

5. You must secure the animal in safety and STAY as close as possible to the vehicle until first responders arrive.

Taking these measures allows you to act as a « Good Samaritan » and intends to protect you from civil liability.

Note:
Step 2 requires you to reasonably believe that the animal is at risk of suffering imminent harm.

How do you know if he is just panting a little or if he is in danger?

If it’s even a little warm out, the conditions can become dangerous FAST. If you believe in good faith that the dog will suffer harm unless you help, proceed as necessary, following the guidelines of the law.
