Ketchikan Humane Society Nonprofit working to improve the welfare of animals in Southern Southeast Alaska. We are an all-volunteer organization.
(57)

Ketchikan Humane Society is a tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to helping to improve the welfare of animals in Southern Southeast Alaska. We are not currently rescuing or fostering animals but we are trying to help shelter animals to get adopted by providing photos, videos and biographies of available animals on social media. We also provide a Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP) wher

e we help offset the cost of a spay/neuter surgery for folks who need financial assistance to alter an animal they own. (Our application is pinned to our Facebook Homepage!)

Finally we have funds available for feral cat Trap-Alter-Release. These funds are for feral kittens or cats with a caretaker who will release the cats to their trap location within 24-hours of surgery. Please email us for a copy of the TNR Agreement and more information.

Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers

Dearest Readers,

In the most delightful news to reach this writer’s quill, our local animal shelter has seen quite the flurry of activity. Numerous canine companions have found their forever homes, leaving only three most fortunate dogs still awaiting adoption. One can only hope that these remaining pups will soon capture the hearts of prospective owners.

Yet, the excitement does not end with our canine friends. An influx of felines has graced the shelter with their presence, particularly an enchanting assembly of exceedingly friendly black cats. These charming creatures are sure to provide ample companionship to those who seek it.

Amongst this gathering of whiskered wonders, there is a single kitten, whose playful antics are sure to entertain, and a most distinguished white cat, who, it seems, has quite taken over the hearts and minds of the shelter staff. Such is the influence of this regal feline that one might say the shelter is her domain.

Until our next encounter, dearest readers, may your homes be filled with the joy of a loyal pet.

Yours truly,

Lady Whistledown

ADOPTED!

Meet Magnes! Magnes is a young neutered male who is full of personality. Like many others he is a totally different dog when out on a walk compared to how he presents in his kennel. He sniffed everything and only pulled gently on occasion. I’m actually very impressed with walking manners all of the dogs I’ve walked.

Magnes had been at the shelter since March. He is a perfect size - maybe 50 lbs? And has a great temperament. He sat on command and was attentive when I asked him to be.

The for-fun-only breed scanner guesses he is primarily Flat-Coated Retriever and Patterdale Terrier.

Meet Magnes (and Joey and Sia and others) at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Shelter Monday - Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM.

Meet Sai! Sai is an adult spayed female available for adoption at Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Shelter.

Sai is a big dog and has a lot of excitement and energy in her kennel - but on a walk?? I braced myself because she looks strong but she was the most polite and gentle walker of all time!

She does not pull on the leash! She does not seem to know or respond to her name - at all. She does sit and shake. She is not wary of strangers and seems to be a confident pup. She is one of the few dogs I’ve walked who waded right into the stream - so she seems to like water. The breed scanner has her listed as a part Jindo.

*Breed speculation is for fun only as it is based solely on appearance.

“The Jindo is a very serious hunting dog renowned for his loyalty to his owner and family. He is an extremely intelligent and independent dog with great problem-solving skills and the ability to think for himself. Jindos have a calm, confident, thoughtful nature, never fearful or aggressive without reason.”

Come meet Sai and judge her breed for yourself!

The Czech Wolfdog is half German Shepherd and half Carpathian Wolf! I can definitely see German Shpeherd in her gait.

There are a total of five cats at the shelter!

Kittens are coming! Right now Birch (neutered male friendly and ready to go!) is the only kitten currently “out” for you to play with - but a litter of younger kittens will be out as soon as they are old enough.

Cynna is a young black female cat who is a little hesitant at first but warms right up. She seems open to other cats.

Shadow is an older cat who loves affection and naps.

Birch is a neutered male kitten.

Artemis is an adult neutered male cat - who does not get along with other cats! Otherwise he is a great cat full of personality with a tendency to get feisty.

Nipper is a senior who has been at the shelter way too long. She likes naps and neck scratches.

Come visit all the cats at Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Shelter Monday - Saturday 10:00 AM - 5 PM.

❤️ADOPTED❤️
Available for Adoption
Meet NomNom
He just might be the BEST boy in the whole world!
If you are looking for a well mannered best friend we gotcha covered.
House trained, good with other dogs and cats.
NomNom is about a 9 year old dachshund mix, very loyal little guy that sticks to you like glue.
NomNom has had a bit of a ruff life living on the streets and getting passed around.
BARK visited the KGB shelter to pull a different senior dog and we just couldn’t leave this guy behind either.
He is over weight and still needs to lose a few pounds, NomNom should be about a 14 to 16 # boy once he looses a few more pounds.
He is very calm, not a barker and can be visited during store hours at My Best Friend’s Place Pet Shop.
Stop by and grab an adoption application, help NomNom get the second chance he deserves.

Having so much fun with the “dog scanner” I decided to get in on the cat scanner.

Shadow has come up as two of the most popular cat breeds!! - Maine C**n and Norwegian Forest Cat*. Breed guesses are in fun only.

Shadow is an older spayed female who has been at the shelter too long. Stop by to adopt or just to scratch her chin.

Meet Shadow and other animals available at the shelter Monday - Saturday 10 am - 5 PM.

ADOPTED!

I’m super surprised Joey has not been adopted. The only thing I can think of is that he’s sooooooo tall. He stand about 5’10” when in his back feet and you can see how long those legs are. The shelter tells me “big” dogs are often harder to adopt out. They don’t do well in or are not allowed in apartments and can intimidate folks.

Joey is those gentlest and calmest giant I’ve ever met. Throughout our walk every time I stopped he laid down. He hasn’t ever pulled - but we have not encountered anything too exciting in our walks either.

He does not respond to his name (it’s possbile the shelter had renamed him or he was just never taught) and he’s definitely a hunting breed mix because his nose sticks to the ground. He IS responsive to treats and the moment he realized I had one he sat right down.

Joey is super tall and lanky. Last time I claimed he was part greyhound but this weeks round of photos came up with part Whippet instead which is apparently know as “the poor man’s greyhound”! All breed speculation is in fun and should not be taken seriously.

Come meet Joey and take him for a walk. (He is nervous in the enclosure and a totally different dog on a walk.) I know his people are out there. If it isn’t you SHARE THIS POST!

You can meet Joey and the animals available for adoption at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Shelter and can be met Monday - Saturday 10 AM -5 PM.

Placed in foster home.

“Fuzzy” is a new arrival. She is listed as a spayed female tri-color Kelpie mix. She is short in stature but substantial in size. She came right to the gate and licked my fingers and I found her absolutely captivating.

The Breed Scanner (based on these not-so-great photos) guesses Anatolian Shepherd. “The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a native of Turkey, where they were bred as a shepherd’s companion and livestock guardian. They were created with specific traits to RESEMBLE THE SIZE AND COLOR OF LIVESTOCK they defended so predators wouldn’t detect them among the flock.” This could explain her unusual proportions. (Breed guesses are for entertainment purposes only!)

Placed in foster home.

Meet “Nom Nom” - a neutered adult male. I didn’t spend much time with him but he presented as calm and curious. Nom Nom is a small breed with a need for fashion. I know there are lots of folks qualified to take him home!

There are puppies!! Egg is an altered puppy (I think male but s*x is not specified on the tag). Egg has two siblings that are still at the vet recovering from surgery - Sausage and Coffee Bean - and they are also available for adoption. They appear to be lab mixes. Call and reserve your puppy today! I’m told that when Egg is having a fit he falls to the ground in dramatic fashion. (Coffee Bean shown below)

ADOPTED!

Meet Cole!! Cole is a big sweetheart. He is an adult neutered male who MAY be up to 1/2 Newfoundland (based solely on appearance.). Cole loves to grab the leash up in his mouth and take himself on walks. He is a gentle soul and a gentle walker - but he is big and has the potential to pull you around.

Cole stole my heart and he has been at the shelter far too long.

Come meet or walk Cole or any other dog available for adoption at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Shelter Monday - Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM.
