If you haven’t seen this precious pair of pups you’re missing out on pure sweetness! You will probably be as surprised as we are to know that they haven’t had any interest. How can this be? If you want to wake up to happiness every morning, be serenaded with kisses and the best leans then Birdie and Bernie should be on your radar! Birdie is an affectionate sweetheart and Bernie has a warmth and gentleness to his soul. If you don’t know their story they were found in rural SC in horrific condition. They are now thriving, UTD on vaccines, heart worm negative and both have been spayed/neutered! If you’re interested in both or one, please reach out so these special dogs can find families!! CORA 6929 is a four-year-old female shepherd who came to VGSR in October 2024.

In November, she began her fostering journey and is currently doing well, on track with her health, having gained 8 pounds and thriving with walks, hugs, and toys.

Cora’s history involves neglect and abuse, which surprises folks due to her gentle and loving nature. She is friendly with all dogs and cats and doesn’t pull too hard if she encounters a squirrel. She’s not food-focused and is more curious and eager to learn. She knows basic commands and doesn’t bark unless the doorbell rings.

While HW+, there is no detection of worms, and she is on the treatment plan, doing perfectly. She is a snuggler and follows her foster around the house! Please reach out if you’d like to add to your family. She gets along very well with other shepherds and basically all dogs!

Part of Cora's back story from before VGSR: She was adopted from a shelter when she was a year old and immediately thrown in the backyard with her shelter collar on a chain by her new owner. She then was used as a cash cow and provided 3 litters to be sold! She never got to be a playful dog. She didn’t get to socialize with other dogs. She was a source of money. Four years later, she was seized by Animal Control. She was off the chain and had killed several cats. She arrived at the vet with the embedded collar from the shelter four years ago. It had to be surgically removed. She was emaciated. Part of her tail had to be amputated due to some sort of trauma, which exposed cartilage. While at the vet's office, the staff said she is so sweet and loves people. She arrived back at the shelter after her neck healed and she gained weight. The staff also stated she was very friendly. She loves to play with a ball. Vgsr.org

Pancake 6757 is single and ready to mingle. This precious girl came into VGSR with untreated EPI as skin and bones. She was very sick but now after months and months of TLC this girl has flourished and is ready for her forever family. She is now a whopping 55lbs and her routine is very simple. She eats kibble with enzymes added - eazypezy! Pancake is social with other dogs as long as she’s not afraid of them, snuggly with her people, house trained and crate trained! Pancake is such a good girl who will fit nicely in most homes! Let’s give Pancake the happy ending she deserves!!

Buddy 6860 is a GSD/Husky mix and who has unique colors and facial markings. He weighs just under 50 lbs. DOB is Sept. 2023, so he is fully grown. He was surrendered after overeating acorns, which caused a blockage requiring expensive surgery. He has recovered from the surgery and is very healthy.

Buddy is neutered, chipped, UTD on shots, on preventives, HW negative, house and crate trained. He travels well by car and does fine at the vet’s office.

Temperament wise, Buddy is a very easy dog to have around. Being so young, he is energetic and playful. He is very sociable with both humans and other dogs and currently lives with one large male and a female about his size. He also plays with the neighbor dog and guest dogs who come to visit. He has shown no signs of aggression although he will guard his food. He does have some prey drive, will occasionally lunge at squirrels and birds, and may not take to cats. Note that I have no way to test him, so please don’t ask me how he would do with cats.

Buddy will occasionally jump on people, and tends to be mouthy, which is normal for a dog his age. However, interaction with small children should be supervised.

Buddy shows no signs of having been abused or neglected. He seems to have the rudiments of some commands, is food motivated, takes treats gently, and learns quickly. His leash manners could use some improvements, but that will probably come with time and patience.

Because of his small size and pleasant disposition, Buddy would be a good choice for someone who would like to have a GSD but is not quite sure he/she is ready for that level of commitment. Alternately, he would be a good companion for another playful and energetic dog.

Buddy is being fostered in Arlington 22204 and typically participates in the Potomac Yard adoption events in Alexandria. Vgsr.org

Pumpkin, a precious 8-month-old puppy is our miracle foster this month! Pumpkin came to VGSR with her sister, Spice, as an owner surrender to a shelter. Pumpkin is significantly smaller than Spice and was around 22lbs at 6 months old. She had the worst tremors we had seen. Initially, it was diagnosed as Shakers Syndrome but finally Pumpkin got an appointment with neurology and had an MRI and bloodwork. We now know it is not Shakers Syndrome but are not completely sure the diagnosis quite yet. It is likely congenital and though there is no "fix" for the tremors she will have a full life expectancy and it doesn't slow her down.

Through learning about the neurology portion we had more bad news - this baby also has a heart defect called a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) and she needed heart surgery.

We are thrilled to say we were able to give Pumpkin her miracle surgery TODAY! She is recovering and doing well. Pumpkin's MRI was over $3000, her cardio workup was near $1000 and her heart surgery was $3566 totaling more than $7000 for those things alone, not to include vet visits, bloodwork/testing and medication prior. Your donations help up provide dogs like Pumpkin diagnostic testing and surgeries that they would otherwise not be able to have. Any donation, big or small, will go directly to covering her medical expenses. In the unlikely event that we were to raise more than Pumpkin's expense it would be applied to other VGSR dogs. Let’s show Pumpkin how much she is loved and supported! Wishlist and direct link for donations in comments!

Roxy 6868 is a sweetheart. She's very affectionate and gets along well with her brother Stryder and our two older dogs. We're working on basic training now: house training, sit, etc. She has taller ears than her brother, but is a bit smaller at this point.

Roxy is now solo as her brother Stryder was adopted! She would love her own family!

Roxy is a pro at the dog door (and opening doors and gates). She's very intelligent and quite the problem solver. She's good on walks on a leash, and off leash, she explores a bit, but stays close and comes when we call her. She's young and timid enough that she likes being right next to us: a perfect situation for training her.

Roxy has gotten all her puppy shots (DHPP) today as well as bordetella and rabies. She passed her physical with flying colors: no issues with heart, lungs, joints were found during her exam. Vgsr.org

Prince 6946 is a great dog. He is 11 months old, has a lot of energy and loves to play. He is good with dogs. He is not good with cats and would be too much for small children. He is okay on leash and is learning not to jump. He is doing good so far but sometimes gets excited and forgets. He would do best in an active home where he can run and play. Vgsr.org

These 4 little snuggle fluffs have a unique story. These precious pups were discovered in a couple's yard as they were blowing leaves. They quite literally got blown out of the leaves and were taken to the shelter with no momma in sight and chilly temperatures. They are estimated to around 6 weeks old and will not be adoptable until they are a minimum of 8 weeks old. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation toward their vet care. They also have a wishlist of some useful items in the comments. Thank you!

Last night Pilot Seuk’s plane crashed during a rescue mission carrying 3 pups. Sadly, Seuk was killed in the crash. Miraculously, two dogs survived. Seuk had a heart for rescue and gave so many animals their second chance freedom flight, including several of ours. These photos were from his last rescue mission for VGSR. He will be sorely missed.

Today's $5 Friday goes toward the medical bills for sweet, spunky Lorek! Lorek is a GSD mixed puppy we rescued from a NC shelter with broken leg that appeared to be an old injury. His first vet visit resulted in x-rays, splinting his leg and specific instructions with a follow-up to determine if he needed surgery. That bill was $502. Lorek's foster parents have done such a fantastic job caring for him that he may not need surgery after all! He had his follow-up today where he had a bandage change and repeat x-rays which showed he is healing nicely and may not need surgery. The visit from today was $263. Lorek will go back in two weeks for more x-rays and re-evaluation. If you would like to consider making a tax-deductible donation towards Lorek's care we would be so grateful. Any amount raised that exceeds his expense would be applied to other VGSR dogs.

Cutest girl you’ll ever see is Miss Juno 6930!! She is a young and healthy 1 year old female GSD ready for her forever home. She is extremely friendly with everyone but can also be protective around the home. She is also dog friendly. Juno is very energetic loves playing and running, and lots of toys and games like fetch/tug of war. She has mastered sit, demonstrates a perfect recall, and is crate/house trained. Juno would be a great running/hiking partner and excel in training, sports, or other activities. She is smart and has so much potential! Juno would love to become your next family member! VGSR.org.

Our Story is how we help German Shepherds in need find their Forever Homes.

Our foster dogs are well taken care of while they are in rescue, receiving love, attention and necessary medical care. Often, this is the first opportunity our dogs have had to love and be loved. Our foster parents spend significant time and effort socializing the dogs and working to bring out the best in our canine family. Unless there are age or health limitations, our foster dogs receive their basic immunizations, are microchipped and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We look forward to a day when our work will be done, but until then, and with your support, we will continue to serve our wonderful German Shepherd breed, in the best way possible. We are honored to work with GSDs and GSD-loving people in the VA/MD/DC area. Thank you for helping us help these dogs. We couldn’t do it without our wonderful community.

We are always looking for qualified foster providers. Since we do not kennel our dogs, we rely on people opening their homes to provide care, love, and attention for our GSDs. We train and mentor our foster providers and we are always available to help. We also need volunteers to help in many other areas, such as attend adoption events, help with transport for the dogs, do administrative tasks, or take photos. These are only a few of the many necessary things that have to be done to make this rescue successful. If you are interested in helping, visit our website at www.vgsr.org and apply to become a foster provider and a volunteer today.

We also need donations! It’s yet another way to help us help the dogs. To make a donation, visit our website and donate today.
