Our foster dogs are well taken care of while they are in rescue, receiving love, attention and necessary medical care. Often, this is the first opportunity our dogs have had to love and be loved. Our foster parents spend significant time and effort socializing the dogs and working to bring out the best in our canine family. Unless there are age or health limitations, our foster dogs receive their

basic immunizations, are microchipped and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We look forward to a day when our work will be done but until then, and with your support, we will continue to serve our wonderful German Shepherd breed, in the best way possible.

This handsome hunk is Jennings 6831. This 3-4 year old boy has a regal stature and is exceptionally intelligent. He came into VGSR from a deep south shelter as an urgent intake because like so many shelters, there was no space and he was going to be euthanized. When he came to my home he immediately took to my pups and just wanted to be part of the pack. He is fabulous with other dogs, female and male. He is energetic and playful and yet can chill and relax. His favorite activity is playing ball. He would make a great hiking buddy and would love to join you in your outdoor adventures. He stays close and has a terrific recall. He is just as loyal to his human pack and will make a great companion. He is very affectionate (on his terms lol) and will rest his head on you when he wants attention and he will also rest his head on the other dogs for attention - it's quite endearing and cute! Jennings is good meeting strangers and is friendly. He would do best in a mature home with no small children. He is house trained and crate trained. Jennings is a strong-willed, large boy who needs an experienced adopter who can provide boundaries as he will push them! Vgsr.org

Twizzler 6858 has had a wild ride in her short life. At two years of age she has already experienced failure at the hands of humans when she was seized as part of a cruelty case and ended up spending over a month in a high kill shelter. Shortly after the case was finalized she made it to the euthanasia list, a common occurrence in Carolina shelters. Twizzler arrived at the shelter severely underweight and heart worm+. She still has a ways to go to be her ideal weight but she has completed her doxycycline treatment and now just receives a monthly heartworm prevention to continue treating her heart worms. It will take some time but she will eventually test negative on the current treatment plan. Despite the suffering she has experienced this sable stunner LOVES people and aims to please. She has a tender nature and takes treats gently. She knows "sit" but doesn't have much obedience training beyond that. She needs to learn leash manners. She is a good natured girl with playful energy and a fun spirit! She is your typical velcro shepherd, when your feet hit the floor she's ready to follow you wherever you go. She is crate trained and house trained. Twizzler did well with all dogs in the shelter but tends to have a rougher play style and can be an instigator during play with certain dogs. She does very well with neutral dogs that do not want to engage in play. A meet and greet with any other dogs will be required! Vgsr.org

Leroy 6922 is an absolutely stunning 2 year old boy who is a work in progress with plenty of potential. He gets along with other dogs but can play a bit rough. Leroy is well-behaved in the house and crate-trained. He needs a quieter home with a fenced yard to burn off energy and would do best without cats or children. Vgsr.org

Meet Storm 6493, a beautiful 2 yr old black German shepherd! She is very gentle, but unfortunately due to her past she is very skittish and apprehensive about people. She came as an owner surrender who had 8 dogs, so she would do best with someone who had a smaller, gentle older dog that can show her the ropes. Her gentle spirit and softness is what makes her stands out!

She is crate trained, and tends to prefer men. She has a very kind soul, and is looking for someone who is patient and understands she will need time to blossom. She has a lot of love to give, but just needs the right person to show her unconditional love. Vgsr.org

Meet Jewels 6952, a 1 yr old 45lb GSD mix that has a very sweet, gentle demeanor mixed in with a goofy young spirit! She knows basic commands, and is house broken, crate trained but would benefit from additional training to help her grow into the wonderful family dog she yearns to be!

She is incredibly friendly—hasn’t met a stranger, and would love someone who likes to go out and do things! She is very friendly to everyone, sweet and submissive. Her ideal home would have younger dog that she could play with and run off the puppy energy in a fenced yard. She is great with other dogs, and while hasn’t been cat tested, her foster mom thinks it’d be fine as she doesn’t have a huge prey drive. She does great with kids (currently being fostered with an infant), but when excited she does jump up— so older kids, or in a situation where training is done immediately.

Jewels has a heart of gold, loves to be affectionate and is eager to learn more! She is very treat motivated, and is just waiting to find her forever family! Vgsr.org

Star Wars fandom lists the human Boba Fett as “being a fearsome bounty hunter, a simple man of few words, compassionate and above all, a survivor.” The canine Boba Fetch 6520 is much the same—a quiet, compassionate, survivor. And although perhaps not exactly a bounty hunter in the normal sense, he CAN find piece of cheese anywhere in the galaxy.

Boba is still a little underweight but we are working on getting him into top shape. He’s not very food motivated (unless it’s the aforementioned cheese), but this boy lives for your approval and praise and will run to the moon and back to make that happen.

I’ve not had Boba long, but here is what I know; this boy doesn’t require much to be happy and gives so much back in return. He is a goofy lovebug first thing in the morning and wants to play fetch even before eating his breakfast. After that early burst of energy he is a calm, quiet and extremely loving companion. Once he is comfortable with you, expect 65 pounds of German shepherd in your lap—literally—while watching a movie. I’m not sure, but I think he prefers Star Wars movies.

Boba needs a little work on leash training, he still pulls but if you come to a full halt he will remember he’s not supposed to do that and will stop. He can also get a little “mouthy” while playing but is very quickly learning that even though he’s being gentle, he’s not allowed to “play” with human hands. He sometimes forgets himself and tries to stand up to give you a hug when he is excited but we are working on that, too. But he’s a young boy with limitless potential who catches on super fast.

Boba is extremely intelligent so will thrive and blossom with consistent training. Extra points if you like to go on long walks or hiking—he’s got a curious nature and adores exploring everything in his galaxy.

Looking for a Shepherd with all the traditional traits in a smaller manageable size? Meet Arrow/Arlo 6727, he is approx 2 years old and weighs 46 lbs. He is very athletic, agile, quick, and loves to play with our other dogs. He is very affectionate, eager to please, intelligent, and has had good training. Like all young adults his excitement level sometimes exceeds his training level and he jumps for joy seeing his person, but responds well to “off” and “sit” till he regains control. He has expressed interest in our cats, but has not tried to attack them. Dog savy cats that stand their ground would be OK with him.

He rides great in the car, protests only mildly when put into his crate especially if he feels he is being left out of a family activity, is house trained and sleeps well through the night..

His ideal adopter would be an active family that takes their dog with them everywhere, and is willing to continue his training and continue to challenge him. Hikes, runs, hanging around outside, snuggles on the couch, he is all in. Did I mention he is very affectionate. Vgsr.org

We are working with a trapper to help secure Lilith in WOODBRIDGE. Please DO NOT CHASE her. Tell anyone you see not to chase her, this is doing more harm than good. The most important thing is reporting sightings immediately to Samantha (703) 489-4039 and details: was she running walking, was leash attached, was she injured etc

Our Story is how we help German Shepherds in need find their Forever Homes.

Our foster dogs are well taken care of while they are in rescue, receiving love, attention and necessary medical care. Often, this is the first opportunity our dogs have had to love and be loved. Our foster parents spend significant time and effort socializing the dogs and working to bring out the best in our canine family. Unless there are age or health limitations, our foster dogs receive their basic immunizations, are microchipped and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We look forward to a day when our work will be done, but until then, and with your support, we will continue to serve our wonderful German Shepherd breed, in the best way possible. We are honored to work with GSDs and GSD-loving people in the VA/MD/DC area. Thank you for helping us help these dogs. We couldn’t do it without our wonderful community.

We are always looking for qualified foster providers. Since we do not kennel our dogs, we rely on people opening their homes to provide care, love, and attention for our GSDs. We train and mentor our foster providers and we are always available to help. We also need volunteers to help in many other areas, such as attend adoption events, help with transport for the dogs, do administrative tasks, or take photos. These are only a few of the many necessary things that have to be done to make this rescue successful. If you are interested in helping, visit our website at www.vgsr.org and apply to become a foster provider and a volunteer today.

We also need donations! It’s yet another way to help us help the dogs. To make a donation, visit our website and donate today.
