Today's Educational Post for our Riders.
Enjoy!

If your elbows get behind the seams in your pants, your reins are too long! This is something every new rider should learn. Allowing your reins to get too long diminishes your control of your horse and very often it tightens your body. This body bracing starts in the elbows and spreads until your entire body is braced against your horse. Bracing to this degree completely breaks the rider's unity with their horse, which undermines the entire riding experience for both the rider and the horse.

Good riders are constantly adjusting their rein length to maintain Following Hands in every gait and over every kind of terrain.

Following Hands post -

When you maintain Following Hands, you have very relaxed elbows to the point that your horse is "carrying" your hands and arms gently in his mouth. This is "passive contact". There is a short passive contact video about doing this correctly on my YouTube channel

This is how to adjust your reins when they are too long -
Step 1: When elbows get behind the seam in your breeches, grab both reins in one hand ahead of the saddle.
Step 2: Extend your other hand forward ahead of your hand that is holding both reins and grab one rein away from the other hand. At this point your reins are in separate hands and they are uneven.
Step 3: Slide both hands carefully backward to make your hands even at a correct rein length.

This rein length adjustment should be practiced often until it can be accomplished in one quick seamless motion of 1,2,3. When the rein length adjustment is completed, relax your hands and elbows in order to regain proper contact with your horse's mouth, which allows you to establish a high degree of unity. In unity the horse is "carrying" the weight of our hands and arms as we let the horse move our arms. The typical rein pressure that the horse experiences when "carrying" your arms and hands is about 2 1/2 pounds, which in the video is measured by a tension scale.

Check out my new YouTube channel. The link to my channel is in the ABOUT section of this page, or you can go to YouTube and put in the search line. Sorry for the inconvenience. Facebook shuts down the reach of any post with a YouTube link in it because they compete with Google in the video and reel space.

True dressage is not about control, it's about communication. It's not about forcing a horse to submit, but guiding them to understand. When we ride with patience, clarity, and fairness, our horses respond with willingness, softness, and trust. The greatest dressage riders don’t overpower their horses; they educate them, creating a harmonious partnership built on mutual respect. 💫🐴✨

Our Story

Equestrian Sports is our Passion.

Although, Our primary focus is on the English Riding Sports, just learning to ride at any discipline or allowing the horse to help you connect with yourself thru our Equine Assisted Learning Program utilizing the power of Groundwork is a huge part of what we Love to do. Here at Iron Gate Farm one of our mottos is Safety is First, and Fun and Skill are tied for Second. Allow us to take you to that next level of Equestrianism.
