Most of our clients know our training program (and the rest of our facility) is strictly positive-reinforcement, but may not know just how important it is to us -- and to the dogs, of course! Below are just a few reasons:

-The majority of scientific studies show Pos. Reinforcement (using rewards like treats or excited praise to shape or change behavior) is the best method of canine training

-Science also shows using aversives (prong and shock collars, hitting or leash-popping, domination methods) has risks like fear, anxiety, stress, aggression, and compromising the dog-owner relationship

-Pos. reinforcement builds a bond with your pet based on love, respect and trust, not fear or intimidation

-Pos. Reinforcement allows dogs to *choose* without fear of repercussion

-Pos. Reinforcement teaching dogs to love training, and is a great form of enrichment

-Organizations that endorse Pos. Reinforcement training include the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, American Veterinary Medical Association, the AKC, Humane Society of the United States, Association of Professional Dog Trainers, Institute of Modern Dog Trainers, Pet Professional Guild, and more.

Our trainers are not only well-versed proponents of this method, they will also buy back any aversive products like prong, chain, choke and electronic collars as part of re-training owners to use positive methods with their pups. September is !

Share these 5 tips on preventing resource guarding with your clients to help them celebrate!

1. Be perceived as the giver of good things rather than the taker.
2. Always do an exchange or trade when objects are taken from the dog.
3. In games of tug and fetch, let the dog “win” the object.
4. Don’t chase your dog. Teach him to bring objects to you and release them on cue for a reward.
5. To prevent food guarding behavior, add extra palatable treats while the dog is eating.

Interactions with other animals and humans can be complicated when dogs run loose. A leash can help to keep everyone safe.

When people say they want their dog to respect them, what do they mean?

Mostly, they mean they want a dog who does what they're told immediately and without hesitation.

Is there anything wrong with this? Of course not! But the way you achieve the end result does matter.

Attempting to assert control using now outdated methods such as alpha rolling or withholding affection is damaging our relationship with dogs.

If we focus instead on creating an environment that makes it easy for the dog to behave the way we want, and train using reward based methods, we allow the dog to try new things and grow their confidence.

I'd rather have a dog who is confident to try new stuff and get things wrong, than one who's afraid to be anything except right.
