“They were hands down the best at taking care of my girl. Lily had an eye ulcer that would not heal so our vet referred us out to their office. They were highly professional, friendly to both myself and Lily, and very gentle and thorough. They made sure I was informed and comfortable with the treatment course they were recommending and set us up for success for at home care. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!” - Nicole P.

We love our furry friends at Animal Eye Care! Our board-certified ophthalmologists and highly skilled technicians work with your primary care veterinarian to ensure that your pet receives thorough and comprehensive care that addresses their unique needs and supports their overall health and quality of life - just like Lily!

If you’re new to the Bay Area, learning to identify foxtails is important to preventing your dog from coming into contact with them.

These seemingly harmless plants have a bushy group of spiked seeds sprouting from a long, green stalk that become needle-sharp as the California sunshine dries them out during the spring and summer months. Not only can these seeds get caught on your dog’s face and eyelids as they sniff and explore the great outdoors, but can also migrate into their eyes, scratching their corneas and causing pain, inflammation, and even infection.

Be sure to thoroughly check your dog’s fur and examine their eyes for foxtails immediately after returning from your neighborhood walk, hike, or visit to the dog park!

“If your pet has an eye emergency, please save yourself time and money and bring your dog here rather than going to other vets…your pet will get the best treatment. I had to bring in my English bulldog for a corneal ulcer which later ended up rupturing. It was the worst time for a pet owner seeing my dog suffer, but Dr. Chen saved his eye with surgery, and his staff really took care of him. Dr. Chen was quick to get back to me with questions through email or by phone, and really cared for my dog. If I know something is up with my dog's eyes, I will bring him here instead of going somewhere else.”

Did you know that pulling on a leash attached to your dog's collar can cause irreversible damage to their eyes? Opting for a comfortable harness can reduce pressure on your pup's neck and prevent glaucoma caused by sustained pressure on their eyes. Prioritize your furry friend's overall and vision health by choosing a well-made harness for those long walks together.

Vision loss in Yorkshire Terriers could be caused by Retinal Dysplasia, a condition that affects the retina's development during puppyhood. Because it doesn't hurt, it can be challenging to detect, but regular visits to the vet could help catch it before it's too late.

Hey Frenchie lovers! Did you know that Cherry Eye is a common condition that can affect the "third eyelid" of French Bulldogs? This eyelid is important for protecting the eye and producing tears. If you notice any signs of Cherry Eye, such as a swollen, red mass around the eye, leaky or dry eyes, squinting, or scratching and pawing at the affected eye, please contact your primary care veterinarian or our team at Animal Eye Care. The earlier it is detected, the easier it is to treat.

Our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists can work with you to determine the best options for their condition and prevent any further pain or discomfort. Learn more at https://animaleyecare.com/common-eye-diseases/

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and we know that as pet owners, not knowing if our pets are in pain or even how much pain they’re in is stressful and frightening. Eye pain is one of the most difficult types of physical discomfort to notice, as the signs are not as easy to detect. Many animals experience retinal dysfunction and vision deterioration, or else suffer through dry eye, allergies, or even cataracts without outwardly expressing it to their humans. At Animal Eye Care, our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists are highly skilled and equipped to diagnose and treat a variety of common and complex eye diseases, but the first step to protecting your pet’s vision and overall eye health is to be attentive and aware of any subtle changes or altered habits that may be occurring at home.

This Animal Pain Awareness Month, take a moment to check in with your furry friend. Are they pawing at their eyes, or else rubbing them on another surface? Do you notice any redness, swelling, cloudiness, or irritation? Are they having trouble seeing on their walks or at night?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” or even “maybe,” ask your primary care veterinarian about protecting your pet’s vision with our top-notch ophthalmologists at Animal Eye Care, and for more information about common eye diseases, as well as the pain and symptoms you can look out for, visit our website: https://animaleyecare.com/common-eye-diseases/

Say hello to our pal, Pip! Pip is the sweetest 3-year-old pitbull pup, and was previously diagnosed with glaucoma in his left eye last year, before coming to see us at Animal Eye Care. Since then, Pip has been experiencing pressure flare-ups that sadly have caused him to go blind in his left eye. Pip’s caretakers brought him to see us at our Animal Eye Care location in Pleasanton, and we recommended a safe and comprehensive removal of his left eye, as the recurring flare-ups are painful for Pip and definitely diminish his quality of life. Our very own board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Hamilton, performed the procedure just last week, and Pip was so brave! The operation was a success, and Pip is at home getting extra love from his humans while he rests and recovers. We’re looking forward to seeing Pip again next week for his two-week recheck, where we'll be able to ensure that the enucleation site is healing well, monitor his recovery, and help him get back to feeling like his best self again!

Be sure to check back soon for an update on our sweet boy Pip - we'll be sharing post-procedure photos and updates from his humans on how he's adjusting, and how our incredible team of highly skilled doctors and technicians have been here to help him along every step of the way.

That California sunshine is in full force this time of year, and while we slather on our sunscreen and always keep our favorite pair of UVA/UVB-blocking sunglasses on hand, our pups need a way to protect themselves from the intensity of the summer sun, too! Certain breeds are more susceptible to sun damage than others, especially those with (just like humans) light-colored eyes. Certain environmental conditions can also wreak more havoc on your dog's eyesight than others. Have you ever been to the beach and squinted in the bright sunlight reflected on the sand and the water? You can be sure that your pup is squinting, too!

If you look forward to bring your dog along on all those fun-in-the-sun, summertime adventures, consider a pair of goggles to protect your dog's eyes from extended sun exposure, and try to find them a cool, shady place to rest and get out of the heat. Ask your veterinarian if your dog is one of the breeds more vulnerable to sun damage, and visit our website to schedule an examination with one of our board-certified ophthalmologists, who can provide practical, professional insight on how to protect your pup's priceless vision all summer long and throughout their lifetime!
