What if we thought of it this way?!?!?

Did you know that the senior research scientist David Mech, whose book into hierarchy in wolf packs created the 'alpha theory' idea, then went on to disprove his own work with a later more naturalistic study? 😮

Although wolves and domestic dogs are worlds apart nowadays, David Mech's original book on captive wolves is still used regularly as evidence for alpha-based and dominance training styles. Touting you need to act like a wolf and an alpha and put your dog in their place so they respect you. However, even if domestic dogs and wolves were closer in how they acted than they are, David Mech went on to do further research and instead found that rather than one domineering 'alpha' wolves actually work as a family group with the parents leading the pack. That doesn't sound that far off our human families really does it? In fact, despite what 'alpha theory' states in regards to an 'alpha' wolf always eating first, in reality wolf parents often feed their youngest, most vulnerable offspring first.

The issue with the first study the book used is it was based on captive wolves and not wild wolves and how they behaved in their natural habitat, once David Mech realised his mistakes he did more research, and with new understanding and data he has since gone on to try and repair the damage his original study has done in how we view wolves, and by extension dogs. This is what scientific study is about, updating with the times and the most up to date information. I give huge props to David Mech for instead of trying to save his ego and stick to what he said in his original work, he has followed the science and admitted the flaws of his original study, bringing new knowledge and research forward.

It is a shame that the original idea is still so prevalent in our cultural knowledge and understanding of wolves, whereas the later study is less well known to the masses. I can only hope that will also change over time by us bringing the more up to date information to the forefront. 🐺

We need you! 🙏🏼 UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM. PLEASE READ!

Costs are up and donations are down approximately 50%. 😢 We are in the process of creating a GoFundMe page, but as you know, GoFundMe takes a significant portion of each donation reducing the amount that actually goes to the charity. Aside from that, it takes several months to actually get the money and we need help now! We thought we would start this way first. Please read below and if you are able to help and are so inclined, we would be very grateful! 🙏🏼

Annie’s Orphans (AO), through Anna and Bill Anderson, has been saving the lives of dogs since 1985. We aren’t ashamed to say that we need your help – costs have gone up and are continuing to rise, but unfortunately, our donations are down by approximately 50%. We need your help! 🐕

In case you don’t know us, we are a no-kill dog shelter in Durango, Colorado. We’ve been saving the lives of dogs for approximately 4 decades. 👏 Our adoptions number in the thousands – but it doesn’t stop there. In addition to taking in dogs and preparing them for adoption to their forever homes, AO has a sanctuary where dogs who have been deemed unadoptable can live out their natural lives without the possibility of euthanasia hanging over their heads. These dogs may be unadoptable for a number of reasons, but usually it’s because of fear or aggression due to abuse suffered at the hands of humans. 😢 Humans hurt them and let them down, but at AO, we refuse to give up on them. We also have dogs with medical issues who are adoptable, but only to those willing to take on the emotional burden and financial expense – it takes a special kind of person. 🥰 Because AO is a no kill shelter, if a dog is unadoptable, he/she has a home with us forever. These dogs get all the love, care, medical attention, food, toys, and treats that dogs who live in homes get – but they get all that from us. We are no kill – no exceptions. 💯 The only time we euthanize is for medical reasons when all avenues have been explored and exhausted and it’s the humane thing to do.

You can imagine the expense of caring for all the dogs – there’s treats, toys, blankets, hay (for bedding) … not to mention our 3 biggest expenses, veterinary bills, electric bills (to heat the kennels in winter), and food. The numbers are staggering! You know how much you spend caring for your dog(s) … now imagine multiplying that by 70 (or more!)! 🤪

We need help – we cannot do this on our own … it truly takes a village. Unlike government run shelters, we get no subsidies. Unlike shelters that pick and choose the animals they take in because they’ll be easy to adopt out, we take them, without exception, as long as we have room. But the sad thing is, almost as quickly as they get adopted out, we get others in. 🐾 We’re not ashamed to say we need help – we need donations to help pay our expenses, our vet bills (usually between $20,000 and $25,000 per year even after a deep discount), our electric bill (usually around $10,000 per year) and food, treats, supplements, chew bones, approximately $40,000 each year. We always need quality food for the dogs (and stray cats that come to us). 🐕‍🦺 The thought of running out of food is frightening. Our expenses last year were approximately $120,000. Please know that Annie’s Orphans exists only because of donations from kind people like you and we humbly ask that you help us help the dogs. 🙏🏼 And although expenses are up and donations are down by 50%, you can make a difference and we respectfully ask for your help.

If you are able and would like to help, please either send a check to us or donate to us through PayPal. Please make your check out to Annie’s Orphans and mail it to:

Please tell your animal loving friends about us and our need for some financial assistance. 💕Please share this post with them and ask them to like our FB page as well. Every little bit helps. Everyone at Annie’s Orphans, dogs and people, alike, appreciate anything you can do to help us out! ❤️

We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Please check with your tax professional because your donation to us may be tax deductible.

NOTE/IPDATE: We’ve heard from a few people that they are having trouble donating to us through PayPal. Perhaps the best way to do that would be to go to PayPal.com directly and then put in our email address which is [email protected]. That should take you right to the account where you can make a donation to us. 💕
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! 🥰

I hope you can all see this video. It’s a great video to understand how odor moves around, but as you always hear me say is the molecular structure the same from dry ice or smoke machine like they’re using versus what odor is so don’t take this literally but it still is a good idea
