Loretta gave birth to 8 little nuggets here at the shelter 4 weeks ago today at TAPS. They are growing up. Loretta is hw+ so will need to undergo hw treatment prior to adoption. Our Kansas City Chiefs litter of puppies are almost ready for their forever homes!
This litter of puppies has us all guessing. A few of them are sharpei in appearance, but in a tiny dog body. Some are longer haired. Here is what we know: Mama is reported to be a 15 pound long haired dog. These puppies are only about 3 lbs. at an estimated 2 1/2 months old. Our best guess is that they'll stay small or medium. Mom weighs 15 lbs. but is a mixed breed dog, dad unknown. There are no known breed guesses.
These puppies will need committed families willing to put in the work that comes with raising a puppy.

9-year-old Russell is still looking for his forever home!
This sweet man loves people and cats, but not so much other dogs, so he'll have to be the only dog in the home. He's enjoying his time in foster, his foster mom says he's a couch potato who loves to play and be loved on. She recommends no small children for Russell, as he likes to play rough sometimes.
Adopters should be aware as well, Russell can be an escape artist, so any home looking to take him in should be prepared to take precautions as to not letting him get out.

Nala is a gorgeous brindle beauty weighing in at a whopping 77 pounds. Her paperwork reports her as a Cane Corso but she is very heavy on the mix of whatever she is. She's big, has a beautiful brindle coat with a nub tail that never stops wagging. She has lived with multiple dogs and children and has done well with them all. She is reported to be cat friendly as well too.
She is currently in a foster home and is doing well on potty training but she does have some overnight accidents if you don't wake up to take her out.

Polka Dot is a beautiful, inquisitive mixed breed medium-sized dog estimated to be up to 44 pounds when fully grown. She is estimated to be 2 years of age. 5-year-old Luna is ready to find her forever home!
She is currently enjoying her time in a foster home. Her foster mom says: "Luna is such a sweet girl who would do very well with almost any family! She loves to go for walks, loves to curl up on the couch or bed next to you, and loves to play fetch/tug of war for about 10 minutes until she decides she needs a break! Luna has a good amount of energy, but also enjoys lounging around. She would thrive in a home with an active family willing to give her some exercise! She is cat friendly, and mostly dog friendly, although slow introductions will be necessary as she can be particular about certain dogs. She loves her people and wants to be near them as much as possible! She gets so excited when her people come home that she smiles and wiggles her whole body!
Older kids would probably be better for her."

Let me just clarify right now that this brindle beauty is definitely in need of some stuffing.
Not only, does he require stuffed with a healthy, steady diet of nutrients, but add in a heavy dose of commitment, love and reassurance to your recipe of forever care for this deserving boy. I wasn’t able to convince him to wander very far from me in the dog run nor did I have to worry about him tugging while on leash. Instead, I had to mind my own footwork as he walked so close to my stride. It was obvious that he was on alert- eyes scanning the landscape, body tense. This boy is going to learn the safety and comforts of consistent care at TAPS Pekin, IL. And, hopefully very soon, the companionship of a responsible loving owner.
He does know the command of sit and he shared a few kisses. ❤️.

I think Cabbage Patch got the memo that the Cabbage Patch is a popular dance, though she may not know the one on trend. Her version is to shake and wiggle her entire back end in enthusiasm. Cabbage Patch is approximately 3 years old, appears to be well-mannered, and walks well on a leash. She is a friendly girl who will be your dance partner for life! She does know basic commands like sit and shake. Potty training unknown.

10 year old Pinto is full of sass. He’ll do exactly what you want if it’s what he wants to do and if he doesn’t, well, he’ll let you know. He’ll need an adult only home willing to give him structure and guidance and attention at his pace. Pinto does have a bite history (in two counties), unfortunately, the sending shelter did not disclose his bite history prior to us transferring him in. They were not transparent with us but we will be fully transparent with you. We also have to slip leash him because he does not tolerate a leash being taken on and off his collar. Since we have learned to read his signals, we’ve been ok with him but he definitely is, and always will be the boss and anyone who tries to tell him differently will be bitten so we will be screening carefully for an adopter who understands this. He also has some food aggression and once you give him his food, you should not put your hand in it…. but to be honest, we’re not really sure why people do that anyway.

This poor cat was picked up in June by animal control and not reclaimed. She is currently at TAPS waiting patiently for someone to come meet her and know she is the one for them!!
Tea Leaves at only two years old she still loves to play and we noticed she really loves to watch the birds out the window. She would enjoy a few treats and for sure a can of Fancy Feast every now and then. She will in turn give you unconditional love and not judge you if you have a bad day.

Hi, I'm Boston and I am 6 months old. I am a handsome black kitten and a bundle of fun! I came to TAPS with my, almost, identical twin brother, Journey. We came from a kill shelter where we had just been left before TAPS stepped up for us! We've made quick friends with the humans here since we are so fun, friendly, and so sweet! We are very soft, super playful, and so happy go lucky! We love all kinds of toys but the soft balls and dangling toys seem to be our favorite! Just a tip, watch us with those dangly ones because we get so excited that sometimes we put too much in our mouths. We are also a fan of pets, laps, snuggles, and you certainly don't want to miss our big rumbly happy purrs! Meet sweet Sandy. Sandy was found running as a stray, so we do not have any background on her. She is a young 7 month old Labrador mix that weighs 42lbs, but still may grow some. She loves to run and would love a fenced yard to run in and explore. She got very excited initially when I got her out, but after running a little she would lay back for belly rubs the big smile pics are after belly rubs. She is also a kisser. She will need ongoing training that may include potty training, but she did potty for me while out. She needs a little help with socialization. She is smart knows sit. With love and training, she will make a great addition to a family.

Another great and fun cat is MARU. He is only about a year old and has tons of energy. He ran and jumped and climbed! So, he is NOT a couch potato type at all--though he does love to be held and be petted too. You will not find a much sweeter cat!
I had so much fun with these two today! They are just the MOST!! Most loving, most playful, most fun! They both curled up on my lap and both loved chasing string toys. He’s such a good, goofy boy!
Sprocket is one big and handsome boy. He is very energetic and will need exercise outlets but he does have a good foundation of manners for a new family to build on. He is reported to be potty trained, but transitional accidents should always be expected, he rides well in the car and has successfully lived with children and is reported to do well with them. He was adopted to a home with two dogs and went to daycare but eventually had to be returned because he and another dog in the home could not seem to get along so we believe him to be dog selective. Overall, he is a happy, healthy and well mannered dog that is large in stature weighing in at 90 pounds.

Athos is an almost 2 year old Pit Bull/German Shepherd mix that was returned when his family decided to move and not take him along....so truly through no fault of his own. They only have great things to say about him...good with dogs, cats, kids, is potty trained (though anyone should be prepared for transitional accidents) and housebroken. Scarves was pregnant when she was found stray, and had her kittens at animal control before being transferred to TAPS. Her kittens have since found homes, but Scarves is still waiting for hers! Estimated 2-years-old, she has never gotten the chance to just be someone's companion. She's always been in fight or flight mode, but would just love to relax in someone's home.
In her kennel she is very calm, but is always excited for someone to come give her pets.

I am an adorable brown tabby boy. My siblings and I were born to a stray who was taken in and cared for by a kind family who are now her forever home, while my siblings and I went to live in a nice foster home. Sadly, my siblings have all been adopted except for me... My foster mom is at a loss for words over this as I am the sweetest, softest, baby with the biggest purr and am always happy to be held! I follow her around, climb in her lap, and sleep in her bed every chance I get. I love being with my humans! Approximately 7 years ago, we transferred in a very scared black pitbull from Tazewell County Animsl Control named Bonnie. Bonnie slipped her collar at intake and was on the run for about 10 days.  A volunteer actually witnessed her getting hit by a car on Manito blacktop  during our search, but she popped up and took off into the woods.  We did not know if we were looking for a live dog, or if she had crawled off somewhere to die. Thankfully, we found her and though she lingered at the shelter, she eventually found a great mom.  Bonnie’s sibling passed away and she was feeling blue. Her mom decided Rootbeer Float, another dog overwhelmed by the shelter system, might be a good fit. Bonnie and her mom adopted Rootbeer Float last week and look at them play. It does my heart good! Sarah Louise Tori Bula Jodi Fletcher
This sweet thing is 2 1/2 year old Dolly Madison. Dolly is doing great after a rough few weeks. She was found by an animal control, had three kittens and then lost all of them. She ended up spending some time healing at one of our partner vets. She is now healthy and ready for her forever family. Dolly Madison is tiny at only 4 1/2 pounds. She is guessed at 2 1/2 year old. She has medium fur that is oh so soft. She loves attention but, at least right now I would guess a quieter home would be good for her. We just loved spending time with this girl!! By the way she does love Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp so you had better stock-up before bringing her home.
November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month! Meet Carley, Bongo, and Raffi! Carley is a 7-year-old Pointer who weighs 51 lbs. Carley can be a bit shy at first, but once she opens up she is full of personality. Carley loves to be pet, loves to run around a yard, and will chase a ball when thrown (she won't always bring it back though!) Carley is very mild-mannered and is more than ready for her forever home. Bongo is an 11-year-old Tabby who weighs 8 lbs. He was adopted from TAPS 10 years ago, but returned due to his family relocating. He is sweet, loves to be pet, but can be particular about his personal space in a crate/kennel. Please give this senior another chance! Is is confused to why he is here at the shelter. Finally we have Raffi! Raffi is a 7-year-old Black Lab. He is very sweet, and loves his chest rubbed. He can be strong on a leash, and his attention can often wander, but we believe he would do well in a home with a yard where he can run, and with a family who would be willing to work on leash manners with him. We have so many fabulous cats and kittens available for adoption! We currently have over 40 kittens under 6 month old that are ready to go home. They are just waiting for adoption applications. We are having an adoption special in an effort to adopt them to loving families so we can help more. For just a $40 adoption fee, you can adopt a kitten 6 months or younger that is spay/neutered, initial vaccines and many have their booster vaccines, in some cases, the 5 & 6 month old kittens already have rabies vaccines! They are microchipped too. Our cats 7 months and older have a $25 adoption fee. Since August 1st, we have had over 120 cats and kittens placed on our waitlist that we don’t have space to help because we currently have over 150 cats/kittens in our care. Meet Sparkle. She’s such a doll who struggles with life in a shelter. She’s overwhelmed by all the sounds. We have her housed in a quarantine room normally reserved for sick pups simply because she likes the quiet. She’s a recent transfer from our local animal control.
