Many blessings this year from many great friends, from getting bees from 5 different friends, to being given some equipment that will be put in use, to this Apiary being put on borrowed land. Many people have been part of this new Apiary site and so far the bees are doing great at this location.

Today a good friend called me to see if I wanted 2 feral colonies. An hour drive and a little work I came home with two colonies of the most docile honey bees I’ve ever worked and a truck load of equipment. Another blessing from good friends!

I would like to extend my gratitude to Ken at Honey-Doo Apiaries for providing us with additional colonies to support our Apiary rebuild. Ken is a fellow beekeeper whom I consider a privilege to call a friend. Notably, Ken's bees have consistently demonstrated a 95% winter survival rate, are prolific honey producers, and are hardy West Virginia stock. I am eager to integrate his genetics into our Apiary. Over the next three years, I will be implementing selective breeding practices to emphasize Varroa resistance and West Virginia winter survival.

Call me if you see any swarms! We are rebuilding our Apiary after heavy losses.

Friends: Please feel free to share this.
We will collect swarms and give a jar of honey to anyone who connects us with a swarm. If we can’t get it, I have a list of beekeeping friends I’ll call and put someone on site quickly to collect swarms. Swarms not captured by beekeepers have a slim chance of survival and can cause home owners issues if they move into structures.

Today, I successfully assembled all individual components selected for a solar-powered bear fence. The leading brand all-in-one solar fence charger typically has an output of 3 Joules and is priced at a premium. I assembled my own components to create a more cost-effective solar-powered fence charger with an output of 9 Joules. Additionally, I opted for a larger deep cycle battery to ensure that the cold, short days of West Virginia winters do not fully deplete my battery. This was a fun project, designed to keep my beekeeping operation both scalable and mobile. Oh and… I have a key fob remote ON/OFF switch!

After losing my bees and needing to rebuild my apiary, I realize just how blessed I am for knowing so many awesome people in the beekeeping community! I have bought a couple of packages from Mark Lilly, a couple of packages from Jorden Stout who I just met this year, and tonight I go see Pete Somers for a Nuc with an overwintered queen. All great people! I regret not taking a selfie with Mark and Jorden now. These men like many others are true blessings!

These creatures are truly remarkable. If you’re a beekeeper, this is scary. This new mite is worse than the varroa mite that wiped out most beekeepers in the early 1990’s and still now needing to be managed by beekeepers.
