Additional information on the LOTC Lomita Park Intermediate class

Before the first class, students are asked by email, if they have something they would like to accomplish in class. The responses are used to help develop lesson plans and focus student effort.

The class theme is “A Training Process” the steps one can use to teach your dog to preform just about any behavior. The steps are introduced and then applied to the most important dog behaviors. The intended outcome is to have the dogs improve or develop those important behaviors and have the students become proficient in using a process for training their dogs.

Something from herding but applies to everything.

I was asked a question yesterday I’ve heard many times, how often do you put a young dog up or give them a break for a while?
The answer is the same— never, we haven’t needed to….

We’ve heard of trainers doing this when their young dog gets discouraged maybe because, the handler confused their dogs talent with maturity, drilled rather than encouraged, coerced or bullied instead of taught, squared their dog off too quickly, slowed him down too much or otherwise turned their dog off of wanting to work and/or enjoying it.
In our method we take great care to be sure none of these happen and one of the most underrated yet, important pieces of training advice is, be patient.
Because your dog is making so much progress and learning quickly, it’s easy to fall into the trap of training too much too soon and it’s important that you don’t. There’s an old saying, “it’s not how a dog starts that matters, it’s how they train up”

We haven’t been to the trial field with dogs that are 12 months old, yet, we’ve both had many nursery dogs that have gone on to compete at the highest level at 10, 11 and even 12 years old.
The joy and reward of working with your partner for so many years is invaluable and we've found, patience prolongs performance— while practicing patience in your training is not always easy, you’ll find it is always worth it.
